Entrepreneurs-Day.jpg
Welcome to National Entrepreneur's Day!

National Entrepreneur’s Day is an annual event occurring on the third Tuesday of November (November 17) that honors people who have built an empire from absolutely nothing. Radical inventions by brilliant minds have shaped the way we live today, not to mention our future.

The word entrepreneur comes from the French word entreprendre, meaning “undertake.” It first appeared in the French dictionary “Dictionnaire Universel de Commerce,” produced by Jacques des Bruslons and published in 1723. The study of entrepreneurship stems from Irish-French economist Richard Cantillon back in the late 17th and early 18th century. He defined the term entrepreneur in his book “Essay on the Nature of Trade in General” as a person who pays a certain price for a product and resells it at an uncertain price.

Syracuse centers in 2020-21: The only certainty is Bourama Sidibe (PS; Carlson)

The potential solution to Syracuse’s persistent problems in the middle is the same as it’s been for much of the past three seasons: Keep Bourama Sidibe healthy, on the court and playing his best basketball.

The Orange’s senior option at center will enter this season coming off the longest sustained success of his career, a six-game display at the end of last season in which his occasional flashes of quality play morphed into steady performance for the first time in his career.

A player who had never grabbed 10 rebounds in back-to-back games did it six consecutive times to close the season. During the final six games of the year, he averaged 9.8 points, 11.7 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.3 steals, while shooting 71 percent from the floor.

Syracuse basketball 2020-21 roster, bios: Get to know the Orange (PS; Staff)

A look at the 2020-21 Syracuse basketball team:

Guards

Buddy Boeheim
Junior
No. 35
6-6, 195
Fayetteville, N.Y.

2019-20 stats: 32 games, 35.6 minutes, .408 shooting percentage, .370 from 3-point line, .714 free throws. 15.3 points, 1.9 rebounds.

Strengths: Boeheim stepped into a starting role last year, and even as his attempts from 3-point range doubled, his shooting percentage actually improved from 35.3 percent as a freshman to 37.0 percent as a sophomore. He led the ACC in 3-pointers made per game. Boeheim also added a shot off a drive into the lane, which proved to be reliable.

Concerns: Boeheim figures to be the focus of opposing defenses this year, especially with the departure of Elijah Hughes. Can he find ways to get open and still knock down a high percentage of his shots? Rebounding is something of a concern. He needs to get more than the 1.9 rebounds he averaged last year.

Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim was totally at ease during his first-ever virtual media day with reporters last week, confident that all the coronavirus precautions implemented by the team would allow the Orange to start the season as planned.

No team meetings, no meetings between coaches, no film sessions, coaches wearing masks all the time, electronic gadgets to monitor social distancing, and more.

“They’re just trying to stay as much in a bubble as much as we can so that we can play. Hopefully, that’s what will happen,” Boeheim said Thursday.

Now Boeheim is in isolation and program activities have been paused. He announced Sunday evening that he had tested positive for the virus but was “not experiencing any symptoms.”

Which means the oldest coach in the history of Division I men’s basketball will celebrate his 76th birthday on Tuesday away from the team and wondering about the opener of his 45th season at the helm of his alma mater.

Former Syracuse star Jerami Grant is about to cash in, will turn down $9.3 million option (report) (PS; Carlson)

Former Syracuse star Jerami Grant is getting ready to cash in on another breakout season.

The 26-year-old will reportedly turn down a player option that would have paid him $9.3 million to play with the Denver Nuggets next year, as he is expecting to make substantially more on the free-agent market.

The decision to turn down the player option was expected but was first reported officially by Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

Yahoo Sources: Denver Nuggets forward Jerami Grant is declining his $9.3 million player option for the 2020-21 season to become an unrestricted free agent.

— Chris Haynes (@ChrisBHaynes) November 16, 2020

Grant’s sixth NBA season was likely his best one yet, as he helped the Denver Nuggets finish third in the Western Conference behind only the L.A. Lakers and L.A. Clippers

He finished last season averaging 12 points and 3.5 rebounds, while shooting 38.9 percent from behind the 3-point line. Impressively, he delivered similar numbers (15.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 43 percent 3-point shooting) during Denver’s final playoff series, a five-game battle with the eventual champion Lakers, cementing his value.

Syracuse basketball better not sleep on Georgetown this coming January (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball will host those pesky Hoyas on Jan. 9, and the Orange needs to come ready to play.

Syracuse basketball will welcome former Big East Conference rival Georgetown to the Hill in early January, and the Hoyas aren’t expected to do a lot of damage in their league this season following a sub-par outcome in 2019-20.

Last year, Georgetown finished near the bottom of the Big East, compiling a 15-17 overall record that included a first-round loss to St. John’s in the conference’s post-season tournament, an event that got canceled along with everything in the sport, including the 2020 March Madness, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The outlook for the Hoyas in 2020-21 doesn’t look at all great, either. In the recently unveiled Big East pre-season coaches poll, Georgetown is projected to finish No. 11 in the league, which equates to last place in the conference.

The Big East, by the way, has increased its membership from 10 to 11 schools beginning in 2020-21, as Connecticut has rejoined this league.

Syracuse basketball doesn’t make final four of 4-star Micawber Etienne (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball seemed to have lost any type of momentum with 2021 four-star center Micawber Etienne a while ago.

The Syracuse basketball 2021 class is going to stay at one member, albeit an excellent one, after four-star center Micawber Etienne released a quartet of finalists that didn’t include the Orange.

The 6-foot-10 Etienne, a top-65 prospect nationally in this recruiting cycle, revealed via Twitter a final four of Illinois out of the Big Ten Conference, fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Miami, former Big East Conference foe Marquette and UCLA out of the Pac-12 Conference.

Etienne is a senior at the Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., who runs on the AAU circuit with the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals. Miami, Illinois and Marquette all have gotten a lot of buzz lately as it pertains to Etienne, according to recruiting analysts. He has spoken highly of UCLA’s rich history within its hoops program as well.

Syracuse basketball not staying in the mix for Etienne is definitely a huge bummer, but in all honesty, it’s not much of a surprise at all.

In an article by Jake Weingarten, the founder of Stockrisers.com, Etienne said that he plans to likely commit “within the next month.” Etienne is a really talented player with NBA potential, and he is also an extremely likable young man. I wish him all the best and much future success.

Empire State Trail to be completed: Hike or bike from NYC to Buffalo, Canada (PS; Hernandez)

The massive Empire State Trail project, which began in 2017, could be nearing completion this December. New Yorkers will soon be able to hike, bike, snowshoe, and cross country along 750 miles of trail from New York City to Canada, and Buffalo to Albany.

Hudson Valley News reports that the trail for outdoor enthusiasts is on track to be completed by the end of the year.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the project in 2017, planning to connect two existing trails previously disconnected. The new project would connect the trails near Albany and add 350 miles of new pathways through more than 130 municipalities in 27 counties.

There are still portions of the massive trail under construction, which are noted on the new Empire State Trail map.

According to the Albany Times Union, when the state shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, it made exceptions for some work to continue, like parks maintenance. The state considered the trail to be included in that.

In October, a 3.5-mile section of the Empire State Trail opened to the public in Central NY that runs from Camillus to Onondaga Lake.

Completing this project means the Empire State Trail will be the largest state multi-use trail in the nation, according to a release by Gov. Cuomo in 2017.

The trail is broken up into three sections: Hudson Valley Greenway Trail, Erie Canalway Trail, and the Champlain Valley Trail. The website details which portions are on or off-road, how long each section is, and what kind of terrain you will find.
