Welcome to National Cupcake Day!

Today is dedicated to cupcakes! The first mention of a dessert with the qualities of a cupcake was in American Cookery in 1796, and the first time the term "cupcake" was used was in 1828. There were two different definitions of cupcakes—also known as cup cakes—at that time. One type of cupcake was so named because it was baked in a container that looked like a cup. These were pottery cups, molds, or ramekins, and predated muffin tins. This is the definition that is still in use. The other type of cupcake was so named because of its recipe, which was measured out by the cup, instead of being weighed (that type of cake appropriately became the pound cake). For instance, a recipe may have contained a cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, as well as eggs. These were sometimes baked in cups, but were also often baked in tins. Cupcakes use the same basic ingredients as regular cakes, and can be topped with frosting and other decorations, and can be filled as well. It is unclear when National Cupcake Day was created, although media articles referencing the day date back to at least 2008.

Andrew Kouwe on Syracuse basketball: 'I like where they're at' - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Andrew Kouwe has been a mainstay on The Juice on the Cuse podcast since 2012, and each preseason, I always ask him for his evaluation of the team. Each time he always says the same thing: Give me 3-5 games to watch.

Now that we’re five games into the season, Andrew’s got enough data to work with, and so far, he’s excited with what he’s seen.

“I like where they’re at,” Andrew said. “They’re at a place where if you look at them now, and you when you see them in February and March, they’re going to be a much better team.”

Part of the reason why Andrew thinks there’s a lot of upside is because of SU’s two dynamic freshmen, guard Kadary Richmond and forward Woody Newton. Both have shown poise and confidence early in the season, and that will pay dividends as the Orange heads into the heart of conference play.

“I really like Richmond,” Andrew said. “He showed in the Rutgers game he’s always got his head up. He’s always looking to pass to the open player. He seems composed and doesn’t seem overwhelmed.

“Same with with Newton. He picks up things quick and he’s not scared. That’s a big thing for [Jim] Boeheim. Don’t be scared. Just play. Use your talents and let the best come from it. Those are two great freshman that will show even better come March.”

What Happens Once Bourama Sidibe Returns? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

Without Bourama Sidibe, who was injured a couple of weeks ago and is expected to be out for a couple more weeks, Syracuse has slotted Alan Griffin into the starting lineup. Griffin didn’t start the game, but after Sidibe was injured, Griffin played 37 minutes.

Once Sidibe returns, it seems likely that Griffin would stay in head coach Jim Boeheim’s starting lineup. Without Buddy Boeheim for a three-game stretch, led the team in scoring against Rider and Rutgers.

But with Griffin staying in the starting lineup, Joe Girard and Boeheim manning the guard spots, Marek Dolezaj likely slides back into his comfortable spot at power forward. That leaves Quincy Guerrier — who has been SU’s most efficient player — on the bench.

Guerrier seems like the logical choice to be the sixth man for Syracuse, but according to Kenpom, he has the best offensive rating of any SU player. He also boasts SU’s best effective field goal percentage, at 72.8%. That stat gives more boost to efficient three point shooting, which Guerrier has vastly improved in from last season. So far this year, Guerrier has drilled 5-11 threes, good for a nearly 46% clip.

With Sidibe back, Boeheim could potentially be forced to play Guerrier — so far the best player on the team — off the bench.

Inside the Covid-Era scramble to compose and maintain a Syracuse basketball schedule (msn; Ditota)

Peter Corasaniti thought he was done.

After weeks of wrangling, after days of trading talks and texts, Syracuse’s basketball schedule seemed complete.

In that latest iteration, the Orange lost Covid-paused Binghamton, scheduled to be part of an MTE (multi-team event) with Niagara. The NCAA, at that point, permitted teams to schedule seven non-conference games if they were playing an MTE. But because of Covid interference in cases like Binghamton, the NCAA allowed teams to reschedule the previously paused team if each program consented. Or a team could simply stick with six non-conference games.

Syracuse and Binghamton could not settle on an appropriate date this time, so Corasaniti believed he could tentatively begin work on his 2021-22 schedule. Then last week, he learned the Orange could reschedule another game and that neither Binghamton nor Niagara needed to be one of the teams considered. NCAA spokeswoman Meghan Durham confirmed last week that as long as Syracuse (or any other team) promoted the game as a replacement in its previous MTE, the Orange could schedule a new opponent.

And that’s what happened. Syracuse will play Northeastern Wednesday in the Carrier Dome.

“That’s where it’s at right now,” Corasaniti, SU’s director of basketball operations who works on the SU schedule with Jim Boeheim, said last week. “If something happens with Buffalo, it could open up again. It happens every night. It’s crazy. I just keep getting, ‘Do you have anything?’ And vice versa. If we lose a game, I’m hoping that someone has something for us.”

Syracuse Basketball: Kadary Richmond, Woody Newton – buy stock now (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball freshmen Kadary Richmond and Woody Newton are faring really well so far this season.

With two Syracuse basketball starters having missed several games of late, that certainly could have played a role in Orange freshmen Kadary Richmond and Woody Newton seeing increased playing time at this point in the young 2020-21 campaign.

Undeniably, both Richmond and Newton are making the most of their opportunities on the court, and they’re each putting forth stellar beginnings to their careers on the Hill.

Junior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim had to sit out a couple of contests due to Covid-19 protocols, but he returned this past Saturday afternoon when the ‘Cuse (4-1) destroyed Boston College on the road.

Senior center Bourama Sidibe is unfortunately injured, and head coach Jim Boeheim has said it could prove a bit of time before Sidibe is back.

That could, in turn, enable Newton, a power forward, to remain a constant in the Syracuse basketball rotation. Richmond, meanwhile, is the primary back-up guard to Buddy Boeheim and sophomore point guard Joe Girard III.

All in all, these two freshmen are competing at a high level, much to the delight and excitement of Orange fanatics, myself included. I hope this trend continues.

Syracuse basketball newbies Kadary Richmond and Woody Newton are shining.

Per ESPN statistics, on the year to date, Newton is logging 15.0 minutes, 8.3 points and 4.5 rebounds a game, while connecting on 54.5 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from beyond the arc. That’s solid.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star Brandon Huntley-Hatfield is a versatile scorer (itlh; Adler)

Recruiting analysts are high on new Syracuse basketball target Brandon Huntley-Hatfield.

Now that Syracuse basketball is among the six finalists for 2022 top-10 player Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, let’s take a deeper dive on what he could bring to the Orange if the unanimous five-star prospect were to select the ‘Cuse.

The 6-foot-9 power forward, a junior at Scotland Campus in Scotland, Pa., has added Syracuse basketball to his list of contenders, and Huntley-Hatfield held a previous top five of Auburn, Kansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Wake Forest, per various media reports.

I read a bunch of evaluations on Huntley-Hatfield, and the general consensus is that he has a physical, strong build and boasts a lot of length. For a player of his size, experts say, he also has terrific body control.

In a recent evaluation of Huntley-Hatfield, 247Sports director of basketball scouting Jerry Meyer projects him as an NBA Draft first-round pick and compares him to New York Knicks power forward Julius Randle.

Meyer wrote in part about Huntley-Hatfield, “Can score from all three levels. Very comfortable with the ball. Has functional ball handling skills that produce buckets in scoring range. Can get to the basket efficiently. Loves to go left as a righty. Has ability to dominate his area as a rebounder. Improving as a defender is a proper area of focus.”

Recruiting analyst Jake Weingarten, the founder of Stockrisers.com, said in a recent article that Huntley-Hatfield is “seen as one of the most dynamic forwards in the entire country …”

Jerami Grant Named Top 100 NBA Player (SI; McAllister)

Former Syracuse forward Jerami Grant has been named a top 100 player in the NBA, according to Sports Illustrated. Woo is counting down the top 100 players in the league, and released numbers 51-100 on Monday. Grant came in at number 79 after signing a big free agent contract with the Detroit Pistons following a strong two year run with the Denver Nuggets.

Here is what SI’s Ben Pickman said about Grant:

“Jerami Grant enters the season as one of the most interesting players to watch throughout the league. After playing 26.6 minutes per game largely as a reserve with the Nuggets, the versatile forward signed a three year, $60 million deal with the Pistons this offseason. According to the Denver Post’s Mike Singer, the Nuggets vowed to work with Grant and develop him more as a player, even offering him a similar deal. Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly later said publicly that the team was ‘under the assumption we should get something done.’ But Pistons first year general manager Troy Weaver said Grant was their top priority, and Grant said at his introductory Pistons press conference that the challenge of Detroit ‘intrigued’ him. The 26-year old will look to become a more complete player with the Pistons. He has proved to be a versatile defender and has shot nearly 40% from three in each of his past two seasons. However, it remains to be seen whether the former second round pick can grow into a go-to scorer or merely a solid role player for years to come.”

Axe: Did SU show us a glimpse of its ceiling or floor against BC? (PS; $; Axe)

It may be too early to ask a question like this, but I’ll do it anyway.

Did Syracuse basketball show us the ceiling of what it can be this season on Saturday in a 101-63 win over Boston College or merely the floor?

Here’s the case for the ceiling:

-Boston College was a bit ...how can I put this ... “disinterested” in playing defense on Saturday against the Orange. Granting that many wide open shots for sharp shooters like Joe Girard, Buddy Boeheim and Alan Griffin is like taking candy canes from a baby. Syracuse hit a program-record 16 3-pointers as a result.

Syracuse, which had five players (and nearly seven) score in double-figures against the Eagles, hadn’t scored 100 or more points in regulation since 2011.

No. 21 Rutgers, the best team Syracuse has faced so far, played real, physical defense and shut off the Orange offensive spigot down the stretch.

Defense will always balance out Syracuse’s chances to contend and the jury is still out on that, especially at the top of the 2-3 zone with Girard and Boeheim.

Syracuse-area retailers, battered by Covid, find a strategy: appointment-only shopping (PS; $; Moriarty)

It didn’t take long for Caeresa Richardson to figure out how to attract customers hesitant to visit her new women’s clothing boutique in downtown Syracuse during the coronavirus pandemic.

Richardson offers private one-hour virtual and in-person shopping appointments at Gypsy Freedom, which she opened at 312 S. Salina St. in August. The private shopping opportunities have proven popular, she said.

“Some customers don’t want to be around people,” she said. “With a private appointment, there’s not the risk that there’s a lot of people or we’re over capacity and now they’ll have to wait. They get that dedicated shopping hour.”

Retail experts say private shopping sessions are an example of the creative ways that brick-and-mortar retailers must find to survive during the pandemic, when shoppers are reluctant to leave the house and resort to online sellers.

“The goal for many retailers is to meet shoppers where they are most comfortable shopping whether that is in the store, online or taking advantage of curbside pickup,” said Shelley Kohan, an adjunct professor at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management. “For customers shopping in-store, health and safety are top of mind so retailers need to offer processes that promote a safe shopping environment.”

Richardson’s customers can book a private hour-long shopping appointment with her Monday through Saturday after the store closes at 4 p.m. During the one-on-one sessions, Richardson shows them her highly curated offerings of sustainable fashion apparel and accessories.

Those who prefer to shop virtually meet with Richardson via Facetime or Zoom.

She charges a $50 booking fee for the private appointments, which goes toward any purchases made during the sessions.
