Taking place in the dead of winter, when food for squirrels and other animals can be scarce, Squirrel Appreciation Day acknowledges the role of squirrels in nature and encourages people to put out nuts, seeds, or other food for them. It was created in 2001 by Christy Hargrove, now Christy McKeown, who at the time was a freshman at UNC-Asheville, a wildlife rehabilitator affiliated with the Western North Carolina Nature Center, and runner of the now-defunct Squirrels R Us website. She wrote that people could simply "celebrate by putting out extra food for the squirrels."
Squirrels gather food for the winter during the fall. They plant nuts and seeds, even aerating lawns in the process. As winter drags on, they may find that the food they stored earlier is not enough, or that food that is found around them is limited. They likely could use an extra treat today. Squirrels are often known to be a nuisance when looking for food. They are aggressive at bird feeders, often tipping them over and spilling seeds, and are also known to destroy pumpkins on porches and dig up flower bulbs. Giving them food as a gift means there's a better chance the birds can eat in peace and your flowers will come up in the spring.

How will ACC determine seeds for conference tournament? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)
How will the ACC determine final standings and seeds for the conference tournament? (Mike’s Mailbox) - syracuse.com
This has been a very unusual and, at times, difficult year for college basketball.
The coronavirus pandemic has impacted almost every team across the country, including Syracuse, which has endured three separate Covid-related pauses or quarantines.
Schedules are being reworked every day. Syracuse can’t play Clemson on a Tuesday? No worries. Just send the Orange to North Carolina instead.
But what happens when the regular season ends? What are the plans for the ACC and NCAA tournaments? We dig into those questions and more in this week’s Mike’s Mailbox.
Q: With ACC games getting canceled left and right, how is the league going to determine the final standings prior to the ACC Tournament?
Ray
Mike: This could end up being a very important factor at the end of the season when the ACC has to determine the seeds for its conference tournament.

After 'monstrous' game against Miami, Syracuse's Jesse Edwards emerges at option at center (247sports.com; Bailey)
While Syracuse basketball has labored through its first 11 games of the 2020-21 season without senior center Bourama Sidibe, Jesse Edwards has been working behind the scenes. The Orange leaned hard on Marek Dolezaj as a small-ball five during that span as the 6-foot-10, 201-pound Slovakian played at least 35 minutes seven times.
Head coach Jim Boeheim said repeatedly that there was no other viable option as Sidibe remains out indefinitely and is not practicing due to soreness in his left knee. Redshirt freshman John Bol Ajak isn't big enough to bang with the Atlantic Coast Conference centers, Boeheim said. And true freshman Frank Anselem hasn't played since Dec. 19 and didn't dress for a game until Wednesday night due to an unspecified Covid-19 protocol, despite clearing quarantine.
Each day, Edwards clocked into practice early for conditioning work with SU assistant coach Allen Griffin. And he stayed late, preparing for the opportunity that came on Wednesday when Dolezaj picked up his second foul at the 13:57 mark of the first half.

Syracuse basketball guards fabulous in critical bounce-back Miami win (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball, which entered its Tuesday night affair at home versus Miami having lost three of four, fell behind 11-2 early in the first half against the Hurricanes.
I have to admit, I kind of figured that perhaps the Orange was headed for its fourth-straight setback to Atlantic Coast Conference teams, following defeats at the hands of North Carolina and Pittsburgh twice.
However, after that sluggish beginning, the ‘Cuse really turned on the jets, delivering an all-around tremendous performance inside the Carrier Dome to avoid inching closer to the league’s basement.
Throughout the remainder of this ACC clash, Syracuse basketball outscored Miami (6-7, 2-6) by a whopping 81-46, as the Orange cruised to an 83-57 victory on the Hill.
The ‘Cuse (8-4, 2-3) received stellar output from its three guards, as sophomore point guard Joe Girard III and junior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim each collected 23 points, while freshman combo guard Kadary Richmond shined to the tune of seven points, eight assists and five steals.

Key takeaways from Syracuse basketball's 83-57 win over Miami - The Juice Online (the juice; gustin)
Syracuse picked up their eight win of the season, routing Miami at home, 83-57. Here are some takeaways from the game:
Syracuse rebounds from a disaster against Pitt
Syracuse had their worst game of the season last Saturday, getting throttled on the road by Pitt, 96-76. Little went right in the second half, as the Orange gave up 64 points in the second half. Still, Pitt has turned into one of the top tier teams in the conference, defeating Duke on Tuesday night, 79-73, to improve to 8-2, so the loss may not be as bad as it seems be season’s end.
The Orange started out on Wednesday night as if they still were stuck in the second half of the Pitt game. Miami began with an 11-2 run to start the game thanks to Hurricane guard Anthony Walker scoring nine points in the first six minutes of the game.

Syracuse Basketball’s Mid-Season Awards – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)
Syracuse Men’s Basketball has played 12 games so far and has another 12 on the schedule (pending any hiccups), which means it is officially the exact halfway point of the season. There have been some highs and some lows for the Orange already. Some players have shined and others not so much. Before the season started we handed out preseason awards. Since we are now halfway through the year, let’s hand out some updated mid-season awards.
TEAM MVP: QUINCY GUERRIER
You can’t say enough about Quincy Guerrier this season. Like, really. You quite literally cannot say enough. The sophomore is far and away the best player on the Syracuse team and it’s not even close. Guerrier is averaging 17 points, which ranks seventh in the ACC, and ten rebounds, which is second in the conference. He is a consistent scorer, a solid defender, and is really the only player that Syracuse can rely on to clean up the glass. If you need any more convincing this should do it– Guerrier’s offensive rating on KenPom is 134.1, which is 24th in the entire country, as in the full United States of America. Plus, he is 15th in the nation in lowest turnover rate. The Candy Man is an absolute beast this year and is a serious candidate for one of the All-ACC teams, maybe even some national awards if he keeps this up.
BEST OFFENSIVE PLAYER: BUDDY BOEHEIM
This one was a little more difficult to decide. The easy choice is Guerrier, but I don’t want to give him every award. That wouldn’t make for a good article. So, if Guerrier is off the table, I’d have to go with Buddy Boeheim. The junior is second on the team in points per game with 16, while contributing over three assists each contest. His three-ball has been off this season, which is worrisome since that is the majority of his game. The reason why I am giving this to Buddy instead of Alan Griffin is because Buddy doesn’t turn the ball over as much. Griffin is averaging three turnovers per game, compared to Boeheim’s one. Plus, Boeheim is taking higher quality shots, according to ShotQuality. There can definitely be an argument for either, but Buddy has a slight edge in my opinion.

Syracuse Basketball: Four-star Tyrell Ward is ‘dripping with upside’ (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball ought to take a hard look at 2022 four-star wing Tyrell Ward, who is fast-rising, under-rated and suits up for one of the most legendary high-school teams across the country.
The 6-foot-5 small forward played quite well at the St. James NIBC Invitational, a tournament recently held in Springfield, Va., for his squad, DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md.
Annually, DeMatha Catholic is one of the premier high-school teams across the country, and that is holding true so far in the current campaign.
Ward’s latest offer is from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech, according to a review of several recruiting services. Others to offer him include Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, Wake Forest, St. John’s, Georgia, LSU, Iona and George Mason.
Last October, we noted in a column that teams such as Maryland and the Orange, both of which he had seen unofficially, were closely watching him.
I haven’t seen a whole lot of buzz as it pertains to possible interest level between the ‘Cuse and Ward, based on recent articles on him as well as some interviews that he’s given. Without question, I’d like to see Orange coaches offer Ward a scholarship.
Syracuse basketball would make a great fit for 2022 four-star wing Tyrell Ward.
In the recently updated national rankings from for the top-150 players within the 2022 cycle, Ward proved one of the biggest movers.
He climbed 34 placements to No. 48 overall. Ward is also the No. 10 small forward in his class, according to .

Destiny USA restaurants reopen for indoor dining (PS; $; Cazentre)
Destiny USA restaurants reopen for indoor dining - syracuse.com
Following last week’s lifting of the orange zone ban on indoor dining in the city of Syracuse, restaurants at Destiny USA are joining in the limited reopening.
Several of the mall’s restaurants are now open for dining under yellow zone rules, which permit indoor dining of up to four people per table, with a limit of 50% total capacity inside. Masks, social distancing and other rules apply.
Destiny’s food court is also open under similar restrictions. (The state had officially ruled the food court subject to the indoor dining ban as of Dec. 1, according to Onondaga County officials).
Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo lifted the orange zone restrictions that had been in place in Syracuse and parts of DeWitt, Solvay and Lyncourt since November.
That came the day after a a court ruling in Erie County, in which 90 or so Buffalo-area restaurants won an injunction against the indoor ban. While that ruling only applied to the Erie County plaintiffs, Cuomo lifted the restriction statewide in what an aide called the “interest of fairness.” The Cuomo administration said it disagrees with the Erie County ruling, and may appeal it.

Covid-closed Syracuse bar wins grant from Barstool Sports: ‘This means we can come back’ (PS; $; Cazentre)
Covid-closed Syracuse bar wins grant from Barstool Sports: ‘This means we can come back’ - syracuse.com
The oldest bar in Syracuse’s Armory Square was once in danger of closing for good amid the Covid 19 pandemic.
Now Mulrooney’s has fresh hope for the future thanks to a lifeline thrown by Barstool Sports, a digital media company known for its often raunchy takes on sports and pop culture.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy called Mully’s owner Joe Rainone Sunday with the news: The pub will receive payments of $6,000 per month from the Barstool Fund to cover its expenses until it can reopen for business.
Mulrooney’s at 239 W. Fayette St. (aka Mully’s Irish sports pub) has only managed to open for business for two of the last 10 months during the pandemic. It has remain closed since early November after Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed a statewide 10 p.m. curfew on all bars and restaurants with liquor licenses.
“We’ve been shut and I didn’t really know if we could make it,” Rainone said. “But this means we can make it through. We can come back.”
Rainone said he was a little surprised his bar won a Barstool grant because it is not open now and doesn’t have employees on the payroll. He said the $6,000 per months will help with expenses like rent, utilities, insurance and more.
“Those things don’t go away just because we’re closed,” Rainone said.
