Welcome to Macintosh Computer Day!

Macintosh Computer Day, celebrated on January 24, celebrates the same day in 1984 when the very first Macintosh computer, the predecessor of today’s Apple computers, was introduced to the public. Macintosh broke into the consumer market as the alternative option to other computers, ushering in a new age of freedom and creativity, and continues to be the preferred system for creatives and techies across the globe.

The Macintosh project began in 1979 when Jef Raskin, an Apple employee, proposed a user-friendly, cost-effective computer for the average consumer. He wanted to name the computer the McIntosh, after his favorite type of apple, but the spelling was changed to “Macintosh” for legal reasons. In September 1979, Raskin was permitted to start hiring for the project and he on-boarded his long-time colleague, Brian Howard. Later on, he would hire Steve Jobs as project lead, sealing the future of Apple computers in technological history. However, in a 2013 interview, Steve Wozniak implied that he had led the initial design and development phase of the Macintosh project. He temporarily left the company after experiencing a traumatic airplane crash in 1981, at which point Jobs took over. In that same interview, Wozniak stated that the original Macintosh ‘failed’ under Jobs and that it was not until Jobs left that it became a success. He credited the Macintosh’s ultimate success to people like John Sculley “who worked to build a Macintosh market when the Apple II went away.” Reaching a 300 million valuation almost overnight, Apple became the fastest-growing company in U.S. history. With over 50 companies salivating for a bite of the Apple, one company stood out above the rest — IBM. And so began one of the most ruthless rivalries in corporate history as many promising competitors drastically fell by the wayside.

Opponent preview: What to know about No. 13 Virginia (DO; Dabbundo)

Saturday’s win against No. 16 Virginia Tech was Syracuse’s biggest win of the 2020-21 season, and Monday night’s road game at No. 13 Virginia is a chance for back-to-back signature victories for the Orange’s NCAA Tournament resume.

Virginia (10-2, 6-0 Atlantic Coast) sits atop the conference standings and SU head coach Jim Boeheim called it the league’s best team in Saturday’s postgame press conference. Syracuse (9-4, 3-3) split the two meetings with the defending national champions last season and will look to win two straight games against the Cavaliers on Monday night in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Here’s what to know about Virginia before the Orange and Cavaliers tip-off on Monday night:

All-time series

Virginia leads 8-5

Last time they played

Syracuse traveled to Charlottesville in January 2020 for the second of two meetings with the Cavaliers. The Orange lost the first meeting 48-34 in their season-opener, but they got revenge on the defending national champions with an overtime win, 63-55. Joe Girard III led the Orange with 19 points and three assists. Marek Dolezaj had one of his best all-around games of his career for SU, despite scoring seven points. The then-junior forward added 12 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals and helped the Orange avoid a 1-4 start in conference play.

It was the Orange’s first win against Virginia in five meetings.

KenPom odds

KenPom gives Virginia a 72% chance to beat the Orange at home, with a projected score of 68-61.

Beat writers predict SU’s winning streak to end against No. 13 Virginia (DO; Staff)

Syracuse earned its best win of the 2020-21 season and started another winning streak by knocking off No. 16 Virginia Tech, 78-60, on Saturday. Four players tallied double-digit point totals, led by Quincy Guerrier with 20, and the Orange (9-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) pulled away in the second half after a six-point halftime lead.

Next up for SU is No. 13 Virginia. The Cavaliers (10-2, 6-0 ACC) sit at the top of the ACC standings, and have won their past six games — including their most recent victory against Georgia Tech by two points.

Here’s what The Daily Orange’s three beat writers think will happen in Charlottesville on Monday.

Not so fast
Virginia 67, Syracuse 62

All of a sudden, after blowing out two opponents by 18 or more points, the outlook on Syracuse’s season has flipped. Even without making 3-pointers, the Orange have sharpened their defense and found success driving inside. They’re playing their best basketball yet this season heading into their toughest matchup yet, and, in theory, that’s a good thing. But Virginia is Virginia, Tony Bennett is Tony Bennett, and SU has struggled against the Cavaliers, their stout defense and their pace in past games.

Syracuse (9-4) vs Virginia (10-2) Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange were phenomenal in the suffocating 78-60 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday. They were great from the field, didn’t allow much from three, and dominate from the start. This is the right team with the right style to hang with Virginia.

The Cavaliers might have a better offense this year than people think, but they’re all about not making mistakes, and Syracuse forces a ton of them. You have to be able to pass well to hang with the Cavaliers, and no one in the ACC moves it around better than the Orange.

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers struggled to put away Georgia Tech in a 64-62 win on Saturday, but that’s an aberration. The Cavaliers have been winning easily over the last month with the defense forcing a ton of mistakes, the outside shooting a constant, and the team doesn’t miss free throws – it hasn’t missed more than two in any of the last four games.

Syracuse might be built for Virginia, but few teams are built better for the Syracuse pressure than Virginia. It’s more than happy with bogging down, and it’s not going to panic if the shots aren’t falling right away.

The Orange lives off the pressure and takeaways, and Virginia doesn’t turn the ball over.

What’s Going To Happen

These two programs always seem to slug it out. Even when they went to overtime – like they did late last season – they still only managed to combine for 118 points.

Both hit their free throws, both can rebound, and both play terrific defense. However, Syracuse’s defense faltered in its last two road games – both losses – and Virginia will make amends for the tough fight against Georgia Tech with a better overall performance guarding from the outside.

Georgia Tech hit its threes to make it a game. Syracuse isn’t going to be as sharp.

4. WARREN NOLAN PREDICTION

WarrenNolan.com is another site that predicts the rest of team's schedules. Nolan is considered one of the most accurate bracketologists of the last few years. That site has put together a prediction for the remainder of Syracuse's schedule, and has them only losing one game the rest of the way. That would be Monday's at Virginia. They predict Syracuse to win out for the remainder of the schedule. I find that hard to believe, but it is interesting. HERE is a link to look at their predictions.

Syracuse basketball's second-half surge subdues Virginia Tech - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Saturday afternoon, Syracuse gave up ten straight points to fall behind by five in the first half, but roared back to claim a 78-60 home victory over #16 Virginia Tech. The Orange (9-4, 3-3 ACC) used an 11-1 run to take the lead for good before halftime, then a 20-4 stretch in the second half to put the game on ice.

SU trailed 26-21 with under seven minutes left in the opening session, but shut down the guests’ offense after falling behind. From that point on, the Hokies (11-2, 5-1) shot under 29 percent from the field and just 2-for-16 from three-point range. Prior to that, VT had done most of their damage from deep, making 6-of-13 from long range, including four triples from Nahiem Alleyne.

Meanwhile, Syracuse rang up 59 points in the same time, shooting just under 56 percent from the floor and making 15-of-16 from the charity stripe in the final two-thirds of the game. The Orange were successful by pounding away inside the arc, particularly in the key, rolling up a 46-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Crabcakes over roasted shallot aioli at Daniella's Fresh Seafood and Pasta House, Geddes, N.Y. (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gma

Reeling in a winner at Daniella’s Fresh Seafood and Pasta House (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Paventi)

They were quite possibly the largest shrimp I’ve ever consumed in a Syracuse-area restaurant. The serving of frutti di mare from Daniella’s Fresh Seafood and Pasta House in Geddes contained four tail-on U8 (less than eight per pound) shrimp, which mostly held their size while cooking and texture while cooking.

It took two bites to get through each shrimp, which held their size and snap through cooking. And they weren’t the only impressive bit of seafood in the dish ($33). Buttery scallops were as meaty as they were flavorful, contrasted only by the tender clams. They were joined by flaky, salty cod and tossed with pappardelle in a tomato-seafood stock broth.

Fresh seafood was at the core of each dish from our recent Saturday evening visit to the five-month-old restaurant. At its opening, owner Charlie Roman boasted that fresh fish would be flown in from Boston to feed the upscale Italian-inspired menu.

And it’s located in a familiar place.
