Welcome to Clashing Clothes Day!

When something clashes, it comes into conflict with, or disagrees with something else. In today's instance, the things that are clashing are the colors on clothes. On most days the goal is to make clothes match, but not today! Today is Clashing Clothes Day!

How to Observe Clashing Clothes Day

In order to make sure you are getting your clothes to clash, start by avoiding neutral colors such as black, white, and gray. Navy and brown also match well with a lot of other colors, so don't wear them either. Then mix three or four other colors and see what you can come up with. You'll be clashing in no time!

Quincy Guerrier’s play makes him a candidate for ACC’s Most Improved Player award (PS; $; Waters)

Quincy Guerrier’s play makes him a candidate for ACC’s Most Improved Player award - syracuse.com
The common opinion regarding Syracuse sophomore Quincy Guerrier’s improvement this season is that his outside shooting has lifted his entire game.

As a freshman, Guerrier struggled with his jump shot. He took 24 3-pointers and made just three of them for a .125 percentage.

This season, Guerrier’s shooting numbers have shot skyward. He has connected on 12 of his 37 (32.4 percent) 3-point attempts.

So it seems reasonable to suggest that Guerrier’s outside shooting has been a factor in his increased productions across the board, including scoring and rebounding.

However, Syracuse associate head coach Adrian Autry sees it differently.

Autry recruited Guerrier out of Thetford Academy in Quebec. He saw the talent in the young-but-unpolished player. And now, Autry is Guerrier’s position coach with the Orange, working with him daily.

“When he came in, 95 percent of his game was perimeter-oriented,’' Autry said. “He didn’t make threes last year, but we knew he could shoot.

“He had never been asked to play around the basket as much as we’ve asked him to,’' Autry added. “He’s increased his touch around the basket. He’s become a more well-rounded offensive player.’'

Orange Watch: Altered COVID-19 Syracuse schedules miss key ACC rival - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: The ACC has had to adjust on the fly all season with the COVID-19 pandemic, constantly altering schedules as various teams report infections and outbreaks. Already, Syracuse basketball has had several pauses within its own program because of outbreaks, and has had games either postponed or cancelled, causing scheduling changes that often occur with only a few days notice. That has created some noticeable holes in both Syracuse football and basketball’s schedules.

Are Syracuse and Florida State really in the same conference?

We’re being facetious, of course, but after bringing football independent Notre Dame aboard as a league member in the one-off COVID season, dropping the FSU game was one of the changes that occurred to SU football’s 2020 schedule.

In addition, after canceling the January 6 Florida State basketball game three days prior to the meeting in the Dome, it certainly appears as though the current 16th ranked Seminoles will remain absent from the 2020-21 hoops schedule based on a lack of compatible dates through the first week of March.

As a result, and assuming there are no further alterations, FSU and Wake Forest will be the only conference teams the ‘Cuse will not end up playing this season in a shortened 17-game ACC slate.

Syracuse and Florida State have met each season in basketball dating back to SU’s entry into the ACC in the 2014-15 season. Though the Orange has owned an overall 7-5 advantage against the ‘Noles, Leonard Hamilton and crew have gotten the edge recently, winning the last three matchups, including an 80-77 triumph over the Orange on Feb. 15, 2020, despite 25 points from Elijah Hughes.

The gridiron has been more unkind to Syracuse in its matchup against the Seminoles, with FSU holding an 11-2 all-time record. Most recently, the Orange triumphed in its magical 10-win season in 2018 with a 30-7 win. But Seminoles got their revenge in 2019, before the 2020 matchup was scrapped because of COVID-19 scheduling changes.

Hokies Rebound in Subtly Efficient Performance, Drop Notre Dame 62-51 (thekeyplay.com; Cunningham)

Virginia Tech wasn't great in its win over Wake Forest on Jan. 13. It was a similar story in Saturday's loss to Syracuse.

To add insult to injury, news broke on Monday that Tech guard Tyrece Radford was indefinitely suspended. The Baton Rouge, La. native was second on the team in points, rebounds and assists per game.

The Hokies were on a two-game skid that left Keve Aluma and Jalen Cone sideways. Two of Tech's leading scorers tallied just ten points and made only three of 29 field goals. Tech needed some answers, and on Wednesday night it found some.

It wasn't the highest scoring or prettiest performance, but the Hokies locked Notre Dame down, crashed the glass and scored the ball ever-so efficiently.

"We played really well defensively and rebounded again," Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young said. "I thought that was the difference in the game at our place and same thing here today.

"We're not playing very well offensively. ... You've heard me say it, defend and rebound and we'll have a shot night in and night out. We got a really good offensive team, we're just stuck in a gear here and we'll figure that part of it out."

Young is right — Tech wasn't great on the offensive end. The Hokies shot 40% (25-62) from the floor, but were a much better 48% in the second half compared to shooting a poor 33% in the first.

They didn't regularly connect from deep either, hitting just seven of 25 (28%) from behind the arc.

"They scored 62 points on 40% shooting," Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said. "That's about as good as we're going to do defensively. We have to go to Pittsburgh and be better."

Despite the percentages though, the Hokies were led by an efficient quartet.

Fuccillo sells 5 auto dealerships in Syracuse, Rochester (PS; $; Moriarty)

Auto dealer Billy Fuccillo has sold his three dealerships in the Syracuse area and two in the Rochester area to Vestal-based Matthews Auto Group.

Matthews announced Wednesday it has acquired Fuccillo Kia and Fuccillo Nissan, both on Route 31 in Clay, and Fuccillo Hyundai on Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse. It also purchased Fuccillo Hyundai and Fuccillo Kia in Greece.

Matthews said the approximately 300 Fuccillo employees at the five dealerships will join the Matthews Auto Group at their current salaries.

“Fuccillo is an impressive operation with a great team who has sold tens of thousands of vehicles,” company President Rob Matthews said in a statement on the auto group’s Facebook page.

“We jumped at this unique opportunity when it was presented to us. Although there is tremendous uncertainty out there due to the pandemic, I have the utmost confidence in our team and our operation to make this a smooth transition for our new customers and our new employees.”

Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Fuccillo, who is best known for his once-frequent television and radio ads touting “HUGE!” deals, sold his two Kia dealerships in Florida in September and has not been appearing in his dealerships’ advertisements of late. He reportedly sold his waterfront home in Cape Coral, Florida, for $2.5 million in October.

A woman who answered the phone at Fuccillo Automotive Group’s headquarters in Adams on Wednesday said no one was available to comment.

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy has slashed auto sales throughout the country.
