Welcome to Spunky Old Broads Day!

The celebration of spunky old broads was created as a month-long holiday by Dr. Gayle Carson, and the first day of the celebration has also become Spunky Old Broads Day. Carson, a coach and advisor to CEOs and entrepreneurial managers around the world, who focuses on helping older women in particular, thought that the words spunky, old, and broad all had negative connotations, and decided to put them together to create something positive, coming up with Spunky Old Broads (SOBs). The day and month celebrate women 50 and older who don't want to get old quietly, and "who are interested in living a regret-free life." She chose February, as that is her birth month.

Pack Falls Late to Syracuse, 76-73 - NC State University Athletics (gopack.com)

The NC State men's basketball team fell to Syracuse, 76-73, Sunday night inside of the Carrier Dome.

With the loss, NC State falls to 7-6, 3-5 in the ACC, while Syracuse improves to 10-5, 4-4 in the ACC.

Junior forward Jericole Hellems led the Pack with a career-high 24 points and contributed 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Playing out of the high-post against the Syracuse vaunted 2-3 zone, the Saint Louis, Mo., native added four assists while attempting a career-high 19 shots. Hellems also was 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Redshirt sophomore forward Manny Bates recorded his second career double-double with 17 points and a career-high of 14 rebounds. The 14 rebounds are the most for NC State since Torin Dorn had 17 against UMKC on Dec. 9, 2017.

Senior guard Braxton Beverly also reached double figures with 11 points.

Redshirt freshman guard Dereon Seabron also had a career-high nine points off the bench.

NC State started off hot offensively in the first half with every player on the floor putting up points. Bates recorded 12 points in the first half on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

Cold second half dooms NC State at Syracuse, 76-73 (backingthepack.com; Muma)

NC State played about as well as it possibly could at the offensive end for 20 minutes, putting up 47 first-half points on 17-30 shooting from the field. Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, these games are by rule 40 minutes long. In the second half, State went 0-8 from beyond the arc and shot just 10-31 from the field, and so a nine-point halftime lead became a three-point loss.

Without such an extreme veer into futility, NC State probably gets out of Syracuse with a critical road win. Instead, the Pack has to swallow another tight loss in conference play. State needed the Orange to miss some free throws in the last minute, but the Orange are one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country and did not cooperate.

Still, State had one last chance to tie the game but was unable to create even a decent look at the hoop, and Cam Hayes’ prayer from the wing was way off the mark.

Jericole Hellems led the way with 24 points on 9-19 shooting, and he was tremendous working the middle of the zone in the first half. Manny Bates, too, took excellent advantage of Syracuse’s discombobulated back line, and dunked the ball four times in the opening half. He finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks.

NC State got what it needed from those two, but without DJ Funderburk or Devon Daniels, there wasn’t enough scoring punch elsewhere, particularly in the second half, when it really would have come in handy.

Bates, Hellems, Seabron discuss Wolfpack's close loss at Syracuse (247sports.com.com; Sawyer)

Playing without senior guard and leading scorer Devon Daniels for the first time, the NC State men’s basketball team fell to Syracuse 76-73 on the road Sunday evening in the Carrier Dome.

The Wolfpack was also without forward D.J. Funderburk, who missed the game due to university policies. Without its two leading scorers, the Pack turned to Jericole Hellems and Manny Bates to really lead the way.

Hellems finished the game with a career-high 24 points, while also pulling in 10 rebounds for the double-double. Bates also had an impressive double-double, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds, a career high in boards. Redshirt freshman Dereon Seabron also had a solid game in an extended role, finishing with nine points.

Following the loss, Hellems, Bates and Seabron spoke with members of the media via Zoom. Here is everything they had to say:

'A big step': With Devon Daniels and DJ Funderburk out, Manny Bates steps up with career night for NC State basketball in loss at Syracuse (fayobserver.com; Baxley)

The bar has been raised for Manny Bates.

With Devon Daniels and DJ Funderburk out of the lineup for NC State ahead of its game against Syracuse on Sunday, Bates knew he would need to step up for the shorthanded Wolfpack.

Despite a 76-73 loss to the Orange, who used a 12-point advantage in the second half to complete the comeback victory at the Carrier Dome, the Fayetteville native put together a big-time performance with 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Wolfpack.

“There really was no pressure,” said Bates, who recorded the second double-double of his career.

“I just try to take every game with the same approach. I know what Coach (Kevin Keatts) needs me to do.”

The scoring wasn’t much of a surprise for Keatts.

“I’ve seen that. I know that he can do that,” the coach said of Bates, who had five dunks and a pair of layups to go with three free throws against the Orange.

“The next step of his development is to be an outstanding rebounder and I thought he took a big step (against Syracuse). That’s a career high and I’ve bragged the whole time about this young man getting better — and he is getting better.”

Bates delivered the most rebounds for an NC State player since Torin Dorn pulled down 17 boards against UKMC in 2017.

Stand back, Wolfpack: SU defeats NC State 76-73 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team picked the right half to play defense in a 76-73 win over North Carolina State on Sunday night at the Carrier Dome.

In the first half, let’s just say defense was optional as the Wolfpack took a nine-point lead into the break over the Orange.

In the second half, SU locked it down just enough to escape with the win and improve to 10-5 overall, 4-4 in ACC play.

Sunday’s win was a take care of business affair for the Orange. It doesn’t help its NCAA Tournament resume that much, but a loss certainly would have dented it.

Chilly Chili Cookoff: 10 Syracuse chefs square off to raise money for local restaurants (PS; $; Miller)

Chefs from 10 local restaurants competed in a chili cookoff Saturday afternoon to raise money for restaurants that were forced to close last fall because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The sold-out Chillin In ‘Cuse Together raised $14,400 in ticket sales that will benefit restaurants that were in a designated Orange Zone.

No two chilis were alike, but they were all creative. One pot was loaded with grass-fed ground beef, another highlighted braised pork. Some had beans, some didn’t. Some were spicy, some were sweet.

“I didn’t know what to expect. I mean anything could happen when you take 10 strong personalities from 10 successful restaurants and put them all in one room for a day,” said Dan Palladino, who hosted the cookoff at his Heritage Hill Brewhouse. “We ended up with great energy and great food and lasting friendships.”

Dan Seeley, owner of The Cider Mill restaurant, was impressed how the participants helped each other out during the cookoff. If one staff member from one restaurant was delivering six cups of chili to a table, a staffer from another restaurant would step in and fill the void. “This was something good that came from something bad that brought us all together,” he said.
