There are a few stories as to how chili got its start, but all point to it originating in Texas. One story says that a group of settlers arrived in San Antonio from the Canary Islands as early as 1723 and made a dish reminiscent of chili with peppers, wild onions, and meat. But there is a broader consensus that chili was first described by J.C. Clopper, who wrote in 1828 about meat and peppers being stewed together by the poor of San Antonio, where he had recently visited. The word "chili" was not yet used to describe the food at the time, and was possibly first mentioned in 1857, in the book Chile Con Carne, Or, The Camp and the Field.
By the 1880s, chili stands were set up in San Antonio. Bowls of chili, which came with bread and a glass of water, were referred to as "bowls o'red" and sold by women called "chili queens." People of note like writer O. Henry and presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan partook in the dish, and Stephen Crane mentioned the chili in his writing after visiting one of the stands. In 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago had a "San Antonio Chili Stand," which brought chili to a national audience. There were chili "joints" or "parlors" around Texas by the turn of the century, and they spread around the West by the 1920s. They were often small with just a counter and a few stools. Chili powder was created by a German immigrant in New Braunfels, Texas, in 1902, which helped the dish gain in popularity in Texas and beyond.

In year of ups and downs, Buddy Boeheim’s latest surge is the spark SU needs (DO; Crane)
Buddy Boeheim curled around a screen from Quincy Guerrier and inched his defender down toward the block. The potential for a 3-point shot had opened receiving the ball, but Buddy drove anyway. Syracuse’s chance for a win against Duke had all but evaporated by that point, the 13:30-mark in the second half, but just two days earlier, Buddy ignited a 20-point comeback against Notre Dame — hitting six of 10 3-pointers.
That resulted in a season-high point total, a return to the 3-point form that defined Buddy’s second collegiate season but had escaped him this year. His drive on Duke’s Jeremy Roach illustrated how much his offensive game had evolved, though, continuing to back him down before exploding to gain a step and bank a shot off the backboard.
Buddy’s path to this point in his Syracuse career has been defined by the 3-point shot, his accuracy shooting it and the threat it brings to the Orange’s offense. This season, though — one filled with Syracuse’s ups-and-downs that have paralleled Buddy’s — he’s been forced to find other ways to score. He’s had eight-point games mixed in with a 29-point one. Eight percent games mixed in with 50-plus ones. And games that reflected his new aggressiveness and instinct to attack the paint mixed in with ones where he resorted to deep or contested 3s.

Bourama Sidibe: Returning to SU for extra year is possibility (PS; $; Waters)
Bourama Sidibe will participate in the Senior Night ceremony next week, but there is a chance that the 6-10 center would return to Syracuse next year.
In an interview ahead of SU’s final home games of the season, Sidibe was non-committal on his future plans. However, he was open to the possibility of coming back to Syracuse for a fifth season.
Prior to the current season, the NCAA granted all student-athletes an extra year of eligibility in light of the coronavirus pandemic that has altered the college sports landscape over the past year. The NCAA has stated that any senior who decides to return to his or her school will not count toward the team’s scholarship limit.
“I think that’s a great plan,’' Sidibe said. “I’d always love to play again. That’s something that I’ve got to get healthy and then at the end of the season talk to Coach (Jim Boeheim) about. Me and Coach have got to talk about it and see how it’s going to go. It’s not that I haven’t made a decision in my mind yet, but after the season, probably a couple weeks or whatever, I’m going to talk to Coach about it, so we’ll go from there.’'

Wednesday Results Help Syracuse's NCAA Tournament Chances (SI; McAllister)
If Syracuse is going to make a run at an NCAA Tournament bid, it will need some help. The Orange got some Wednesday night from the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
NC State pulled off a monumental upset by winning at #15 Virginia 68-61. Why is this important to Syracuse? It will give the Orange a quadrant one win.
NC State entered Wednesday night's game ranked 81st in the NET ranking. Syracuse beat NC State twice, including 77-68 on the road on February 9th. Syracuse's biggest weakness in its NCAA Tournament resume is a lack of quadrant one wins. More specifically, they had none.
A quadrant one win is defined as beating a top 30 NET team at home, top 50 NET team on a neutral court or a top 75 NET team on the road. Virginia was ninth in the NET ranking going into the game, and that win will cause NC State to move up. How much remains to be seen, and updated rankings will be released Thursday morning. But it should easily enough to move at least six spots and crack that 75 line to give Syracuse a quadrant one win. In addition, it will move Syracuse's win over NC State in the Dome up to a quadrant two win. Another boost to the Orange's NCAA Tournament resume.
In addition to NC State's win, bubble teams Xavier, Indiana and Seton Hall all lost. Xavier lost to 12-11 Providence, Indiana was blown out by Rutgers and Seton Hall fell to a Butler team with a losing record. Those results all help Syracuse.

Transfer Bubba Parham shines off the bench in 2nd season at Georgia Tech (DO; McCaffery)
Bubba Parham missed his first two shots of the night against a 2018 Kentucky team with Tyler Herro and Immanuel Quickley. Playing for Virginia Military Institute, Parham’s lone Division I offer, he quickly bounced back, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers. He finished the night with 10 — breaking VMI’s single-game record.
Despite the loss, Parham won over the Rupp Arena crowd, and fans were even asking his mother, Cynthia, for autographs.
Parham managed to make a name for himself at VMI, scoring over 1,000 points in his two seasons there. He averaged 21.4 points per game in his final season, and earned All-Southern Conference second team honors.
After transferring to Georgia Tech, less than an hour away from his hometown, the senior is averaging 7.7 points per game as a key rotation player coming off the bench. Although he’s no longer a starter like he was at VMI, Parham’s role is a good fit, he and coaches agreed. His former high school coach said despite his reduced role, he’s a much more “complete player” at GT than he was at VMI.

Former Syracuse player Matt Gorman joins this week’s edition of the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast. Gorman played at SU from 2002 to 2007 and was a member of the 2003 national championship team. He was part of the same freshman class as Carmelo Anthony and Gerry McNamara. Gorman talks about fishing with GMac, dunking on Carmelo and why after not playing much in his first two years at SU, he chose to stay and redshirt rather than transfer.

New LEGOLAND NY Resort confirms it will open in 2021 (PS; Hernandez)
Thanks to recently relaxed rules during the coronavirus pandemic, LEGO fans will finally get to visit the new LEGOLAND NY Resort sometime in 2021.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Feb. 17 that outdoor amusement parks can open, beginning on April 9. He said limited capacity, face coverings, social distancing, temperature checks and cleaning will all be required.
Though no official 2021 opening date for LEGOLAND NY has been announced just yet, the company said in a statement that it will celebrate its grand opening this year and will be the first theme park to open in the Northeast in more than four decades. Located in Orange County’s village of Goshen, the park was reported to be in its final stages of construction last fall.
In total, LEGOLAND NY will have seven themed lands, over 50 rides, shows and attractions, and a 250-room LEGOLAND Hotel. It will also have the world premiere of The Lego Factory Adventure Ride which will make park-goers feel like they’re whizzing through a Lego plant, while cameras and facial recognition software “shrink” riders and transform them into Lego Minifigures.
