Syracuse hangs on to beat North Carolina, revive NCAA tournament hopes (PS;$; Waters)

Syracuse left fingernail marks on the Carrier Dome court and held on for a 72-70 win over North Carolina on Monday night.

Syracuse led by 10 points with less than three minutes left, and eight points with a minute to go, but the Tar Heels staged a furious rally in the final minutes.

The win lifted Syracuse’s record to 14-8 overall and 8-7 in the ACC. It also revived the Orange’s dwindling hopes for an NCAA tournament bid.

North Carolina, which was coming off an impressive win over Florida State on Saturday, fell to 15-9 for the year and 9-6 in the conference.

Syracuse avenged an 81-75 loss to North Carolina on Jan. 12 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

North Carolina out-rebounded Syracuse 53-33 but the Orange held the Tar Heels to 4-for-20 shooting from the 3-point line.

UNC-Syracuse: Roy Williams Postgame (247sports.com; Hall)

North Carolina's 20 turnovers proved insurmountable down the stretch as Syracuse held on to win, 72-70. Roy Williams said after UNC's loss to Marquette that his team couldn't stand a little prosperity and that was evident Monday following the upset win over Florida State.

The Tar Heels led by nine on two separate occasions in the first half. In the final 6:46 of that half, they had three field goals to go along with four turnovers to allow the Orange to compile a six-point lead into halftime. UNC eventually retook the lead, 36-35, with 17:41 to play, but the Orange capitalized on numerous turnovers to get to its largest lead of the game, 63-49. Despite that, the Tar Heels trailed by three with 11.4 seconds, but Caleb Love missed two free throws to extinguish his team's chance at a comeback.

UNC’s last-minute push not enough, as they fall to Syracuse 70-72 (tarheelblog.com; Anderson)

Let’s be honest: we all saw this coming.

If there is one thing that can be said about this year’s Carolina team, it is that there are elements of predictability that are too strong to be ignored. Following a big win against a ranked opponent, the Heels did what many of us thought they would do: they played sloppy, flat, and at times chaotic basketball against Syracuse.

Amazingly things didn’t start off that way, however. UNC opened the game on an 11-2 run thanks to the bigs penetrating Syracuse’s 2-3 zone. That would prove to be the best stretch of the game, as Syracuse quickly closed the gap, and for the rest of the half blows were traded between the two teams. There were moments when the Heels looked exactly like the talented team we’ve seen at times during the season: aggressive, surgical, and hungry for a win. Then of course, were the predictably bad moments: loads of turnovers, poor shooting from the perimeter, and the failure to stop the other team’s shooter from getting hot. In this case, Buddy Boeheim lit the Heels on fire from three-point land, finishing the game with 26 points and made six of his 13 three-point attempts. Despite his incredible first half performance, UNC went into the locker room only down by six.

The final 20 minutes in UNC’s games this season have treated them much nicer than their first halves have, but in this game that logic didn’t apply. UNC did go on a couple of runs, and at one point even took the lead back, but Boeheim and Quincy Guerrier continued to do a large amount of damage. Things did get weirdly interesting in the final minute of the game, however, when the Heels went on an 8-2 run before time expired. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about that final minute is that they did a lot of the things that would’ve helped a lot in the first 39 minutes of the game: Caleb Love and RJ Davis knocked down a couple of threes, they were able to get some baskets on the fast break, and overall took advantage of the dead-ball pace Syracuse started to play in the final five minutes. To say it was too little too late is an understatement, but unfortunately this is something that we are all familiar with by now.

UNC men's basketball can't come back against Syracuse, loses 72-70 on the road (dailytarheel.com; Meyer)

After a signature win over No. 11 Florida State on Saturday, the UNC men’s basketball team (15-9, 9-6 ACC) flopped in a 72-70 loss to the Syracuse Orange (14-8, 8-7 ACC) on Monday night at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

What happened?

Senior forward Garrison Brooks got the scoring started for the Tar Heels, and the team continued to apply pressure in the opening minutes. With nearly five minutes off the clock, UNC led 11-2, holding Syracuse to just 1-8 from the field.

Despite UNC’s hot start, Syracuse’s Buddy Boeheim quickly brought the game within one (11-10) with a 3-point jumper. Despite only leading the Orange by four halfway through the period, UNC was out-rebounding Syracuse 22-6 total — 10-1on the offensive glass. UNC only shot 35.1 percent in the opening half, but the team capitalized on big plays, including a slam dunk by first-year big Day’Ron Sharpe and a fast-break dunk for junior forward Leaky Black, and took a 20-13 lead.

Despite the rebound margin favoring the Tar Heels, UNC only led by five (28-23) with three minutes left in the period, and were tied with just under two minutes remaining. The Tar Heels were unable to dust Syracuse due to the Orange's seven 3-pointers, while UNC had zero in the opening half. Boeheim’s fourth 3-pointer of the game gave Syracuse its first lead (31-28) of the match, and he immediately followed that up with his fifth, heading to halftime with Syracuse leading 34-28.

After fizzling out at the end of the first half, a 3-pointer for first-year guard Caleb Love and a jumper in the paint for Brooks gave UNC the one-point lead, but only for a minute. Syracuse quickly brought their lead to 12, going on a 15-2 run over a five-minute stretch with just over 12 minutes left.

Every time UNC looked to be overcoming the deficit, Syracuse would respond with a burst of energy. With just over six minutes left to play, Syracuse went on a 9-1 run thanks to the efforts of Boeheim and Quincy Guerrier.

Not all was lost, though. A critical 3-pointer from Love brought UNC within six (68-62) with just over a minute to play. A free throw from Sharpe, a 3-pointer from first-year guard RJ Davis and a layup off a steal for Love brought the game within two with 18 seconds to spare.

But it wasn’t enough, as UNC fell, 72-70.

Instant Juice: Syracuse 72, UNC 70 - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

A quick take on Syracuse’s 72-70 win over North Carolina on Monday evening:

WHAT HAPPENED: Syracuse appeared to be in control, up 68-58 with 2:39 to go, but an ill-advised inbounds pass from Marek Dolezaj sparked a furious rally for North Carolina, who pulled to within 70-68 with 19 seconds left after Caleb Love made a runner in the land after a Robert Braswell turnover. But Joe Girard III made three free throws in the final 13 seconds, and Love missed a pair, as the Orange ended a two-game losing streak to guarantee at least a .500 regular season finish in the ACC. Syracuse led for most of the second half after going into intermission up 34-28.

ANALYSIS: Too little, too late for the Orange’s post-season chances. While a win over North Carolina, a team that has typically dominated Syracuse in the past, is certainly a nice win, it is still a Q2 win since UNC is 41st in the NET rankings (a Q1 win is only awarded for a home win against a top 25 NET team). A performance like this would’ve had more of an impact against Duke or Georgia Tech on the road, two Q1 games. But as the Orange’s resume currently stands, they have zero Q1 wins, and head into the ACC Tournament in desperate need of a deep run in order to even be considered for an at-large bid.

HERO: Buddy Boeheim’s 26 points led Syracuse while Quincy Guerrier shook off recent poor performances to chip in 18 points and six rebounds. Perhaps the biggest storyline was the play of Jesse Edwards, who provided quality minutes off the bench against North Carolina’s big men, collecting six points and eight rebounds to go with four steals before fouling out.

Buddy Boeheim turns in lights-out shooting performance in Syracuse win over UNC (wnct.com)

Buddy Boeheim took a ton of shots and made a good amount of them, especially from three in Syracuse’s 72-70 win over North Carolina on Monday night.

The coach’s son Boeheim scored 26 points on 9-of-20 from the field. He also would knock down six three pointers, triple the amount the Tar Heels made (2-of-16) the entire night.

North Carolina’s own sharpshooter Kerwin Walton went cold after scoring in double figures in three of UNC’s last five contests. He only had 2 points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field, including an 0-for-7 performance from three.

North Carolina made attempt after attempt to cut Syracuse’s lead in the second half, bringing it as close as two points with 18 seconds left in the game.

The lone bright spot for the Tar Heels was forward Armando Bacot. The junior turned in a monster double-double for the team, scoring 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.

The remaining starters for the Heels combined to shoot 10-of-35 from the field.

Surging Clemson Eyeing Top-Four Seed in ACC Tournament (SI; Watterson)

It's undeniable that the Clemson basketball team learned from its mistakes after the first COVID-19 pause of the season.

The Tigers have now won five in a row, including two since their latest pandemic hiatus, and after Saturday's win over Miami, Clemson sits fifth in the ACC standings at 9-5 (15-5 overall) and are in control of their own destiny with two games remaining.

Clemson currently ranks as a sixth seed in ESPN's Joe Lunardi's latest bracketology, and if Brad Brownell's team can win its last two games of the regular season this week and make a run in the ACC tournament, they could see themselves as high as a top-four NCAA seed on Selection Sunday.

Clemson's schedule throughout the first half of the season saw them facing a test virtually every week; but the Tigers now have the most favorable road to a top-four finish of any of their competition.

Even with one of the easier roads to finish out the season, Brownell, like most coaches, wants the Tigers to focus one game at a time.

"Well I mean obviously, the best part about (getting a double-bye) is that it means you've won the rest of your games probably," Brownell said. "And that means we would be 11-5 and 17-5 or something and you know we'd be putting ourselves in a great position. We're trying to win every game."

Syracuse restaurant to reopen for the first time since November. Will more follow? (PS; $; Cazentre)

Another sign that things may be turning around in the local dining industry: Modern Malt in Armory Square reopens on Wednesday for the first time since before Thanksgiving.

“Things seem to be heading in the right direction, finally,” said Robb Bidwell, a partner in the modern and funky diner with a full cocktail bar at 325 S. Clinton St.

Modern Malt had closed completely last March, during the initial statewide restaurant shutdown ordered by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. It reopened in the summer under the limited indoor dining allowed at the time, but closed up again in November when Cuomo put the city in an orange zone, banning indoor dining.

Bidwell and his partners decided that the takeout-only model wouldn’t work for Modern Malt’s menu.

“Eggs don’t travel well,” he said. It stayed closed even after the orange zone restrictions were lifted last month.

Jesse "now" ready to contribute following months of practices, but was he ready last fall?

Jesse "now" ready to contribute following months of practices, but was he ready last fall?

Since Jesse was late getting back from Europe, then had to deal with a two week Covid shutdown, Jesse: Oct '20 was probably the same as Jesse: Mar '20.

Jesse: Mar '21 is much better.

Marek is a very easy player to root for. He always does his best. So unselfish. So easy going.

As others have said in this thread, I hope he (and Bourama) come back for a proper senior season next year.

Agree. He and Bourama are both easy to cheer for after reading their interviews. Each are very likable and have great perspectives
