Scallops have been enjoyed by people in seaside communities since the beginning of time. It should not come as a surprise that the culinary world would want to give them their own day to shine! There are so many ways that this little creature can be served. They are a common addition to seafood soups, stews, and chowders. One can commonly find them baked or fried on restaurant menus ready to be enjoyed.
For those who are not used to cooking seafood, the idea of trying to make one of these dishes at home can be overwhelming. Like many things in the world of cooking, the truth is much different. Scallops are quick and easy to cook and therefore are a great place to start. Making friends with your fishmonger is essential so that you know that the scallops you buy as are fresh as possible. Many supermarkets have seafood departments and are a great resource.
This one is for you, LilJoe!

Syracuse Bubble Watch: March 12th Games to Watch & Desired Outcome (SI; Mcallister)
NET UPDATE
Syracuse: Stayed at 39
North Carolina: UNC dropped one spot to 33 after beating Virginia Tech. It is true this makes no sense, but that's the NET ladies and gentlemen.
NC State: Stayed at 72 and a quad one win for Syracuse.
Buffalo: The Bulls moved up to 74, making them a quad two win for Syracuse.
Georgetown: Moved up to 85, just 10 spots away from quad two.
MARCH 12th GAMES
Mississippi State vs Alabama (12:00 p.m., ESPN): This game is only important because an Alabama win would prevent a potential bid thief in MSU from advancing in the SEC Tournament.
Cincinnati vs SMU (3:00 p.m., ESPN2): SMU is another team on the bubble. Its resume is lacking in several areas, so a win here would not put them in. Still, if you're Syracuse, you'd prefer a loss just to be on the safe side.
Georgetown vs Seton Hall (6:00 p.m., FS1): Georgetown continues to creep up towards quad two territory for Syracuse. A win here would help that cause and eliminate Seton Hall.
Tulane vs Houston (7:00 p.m., ESPNU): A Houston win prevents a potential bid thief in the AAC.

Syracuse Basketball: Buddy Boeheim is playing at an All-American level (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball junior Buddy Boeheim came to the Hill a couple of years ago with the added – and unfair – pressure of being the son of the team’s head coach.
Boeheim, the 6-foot-6 shooting guard, wasn’t a highly rated recruit as he competed for the powerhouse Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., immediately prior to joining the Orange.
Some ‘Cuse fans, upon his arrival and even more recently, have felt that Boeheim is primarily a 3-point specialist who gets more minutes than he should, because his dad is Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim.
I respect my fellow Orange fanatics’ opinions, however, I also believe that this line of thinking is flawed. Buddy Boeheim, as a sophomore in the 2019-20 term, led the Atlantic Coast Conference in 3-point shooting percentage and 3-point field-goals made per game.

Syracuse loss hurts cause for tourney (AP; Beard)
Jim Boeheim figured his Syracuse team has done enough to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Orange beat North Carolina State on Wednesday in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, a matchup of the league’s two teams facing bubble uncertainty. That certainly helped Syracuse as it hovers around the cut line in many bracket projections.
“I think when you look at the profile overall, I think we’ve got a lot of good wins against good teams,” Boeheim said, adding: “I think we did what we needed to do this year, but we’ll see what happens.”
Syracuse (16-9) jumped 10 spots to No. 39 in NET on Thursday before its loss to No. 16 Virginia in the ACC quarterfinals. And the Orange went from being just outside the 68-team field to a No. 12 seed in BracketMatrix’s average of tournament projections, with the Orange appearing on 74 of 117 mock brackets as of midday Thursday.
Syracuse lacks a headline win on a resume that includes a 1-7 record in Quadrant 1 games — the top category based on an opponent’s NET ranking — though Boeheim noted seven of the eight games were played on the road.
He also pointed to the team’s 5-1 record against Quadrant 2 teams, with the win against the Wolfpack — coming off five straight wins — joining that category.
Beating Virginia on Thursday likely would have eliminated all doubt on Syracuse’s tournament chances.

Bennett Postgame vs. Syracuse (virginiasports.com; video)
Virginia head coach Tony Bennett talks about UVA's dramatic win over Syracuse in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
Five Takeaways from Syracuse's Loss to Virginia (SI; McAllister)
Syracuse fell 72-69 against Virginia on a buzzer beating three pointer. Here is what that loss means.
1. Syracuse is Still a Tournament Team
This loss stings if you're Syracuse. The Orange played extremely well, had opportunities to win, but it was not enough as Virginia hit a three pointer at the buzzer to beat Syracuse. That is a tough blow as a win would have removed any doubt about Syracuse's NCAA Tournament status. That said, there is no doubt after watching this team over the last four games that Syracuse is a tournament team. As teams like Xavier, Boise State, UCLA, and others lose to bad teams, Syracuse beat good teams down the stretch of the regular season. That was followed up by a dominant win over NC State and a really strong performance against the ACC's best. This Syracuse team is good. This Syracuse team is NCAA Tournament worthy. They should be in.
2. The Non-Five Second Call
There are plenty of videos circulating with stop watches showing that Virginia had the ball anywhere from 5.75-6 seconds before inbounding it. Yet a five second call was not made. Let's be clear, it was five seconds. It was missed. That said, Syracuse still had an opportunity to make a defensive play. They actually gave up a shot to the guy you'd want taking that, he just happened to make it. Before the game winning three, Reece Beekman was 0-5 shooting and 0-3 from beyond the arc. It happens sometimes. None of that makes things less frustrating, but it is what it is.

There are just 123 games left in the 2020-21 college basketball season. Almost half of those will get played Thursday. The NCAA Tournament selection committee began meeting Wednesday to start the process of selecting and seeding the field. The finish line is almost here.

Syracuse beat NC State 89-68 for its third win over the Wolfpack this season. That only marginally improved the tournament resume for the Orange, but with Xavier's loss, those two have switched places in the bracket. In order to do that, Syracuse also had to jump Saint Louis.
The Orange are not safely in, of course, but a win Friday against Virginia would help.
Elsewhere in the ACC Tournament, Clemson and Louisville dropped a seed line each after losses to Miami and Duke respectively. For Clemson, that loss is their worst of the season and their first outside of Quad 1. Louisville is now 2-1 against Duke and should sweat out Selection Sunday.

Developer of luxury waterfront apartments with rents up to $1,800 wants $6 million tax break (PS; $; Moriarty)
The developer planning a 248-unit luxury, gated apartment complex on Oneida Lake shoreline with rents up to $1,800 a month wants $6.1 million in tax breaks.
TreyJay Loso LLC applied to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency this month for a payment-in-lieu-of-tax agreement that would provide $3.2 million in property tax discounts over 10 years on the $56.7 million gated community planned for the 25-acre property.
In addition, the company has requested a $2.5 million exemption from sales taxes on construction materials and a $354,700 exemption from the state mortgage recording tax. It would have to pay the development agency a project fee of $709,125 if the tax breaks are approved.
In its application, the developer said the project would not be feasible without the tax breaks.
The request immediately ran into opposition from the development agency’s chairman, Pat Hogan.
At a meeting of the agency on Tuesday, Hogan questioned whether property tax breaks are justified for “high end” waterfront apartments loaded with amenities and rents as high as $1,800.
“This isn’t a distressed area,” he said.
Charlie Breuer, executive vice president of the project’s general contractor, Hueber-Breuer Construction Co., spoke to the agency via Zoom on Tuesday. He did not respond to Hogan’s remarks during the meeting and did not return a call from syracuse.com | The Post-Standard seeking comment afterward.
