Welcome to National Spinach Day!

Originally from Persia (the area that is now Iran), spinach made its way to China in the 7th century, where the people referred to it as the “Herb of Persia” or the “Persian Green”. The vegetable eventually ended up in Europe a few hundred years later, when it landed in Spain. In fact, for some time the English referred to spinach as “The Spanish Vegetable”. It didn’t make its way to being cultivated in North American until sometime in the early 1800s.

Possibly the most famous person in history to be associated with spinach is 16th-century noblewoman, Catherine de’ Medici, who ruled France from behind her three sons for many years. Originally from Florence, Italy, she moved to France when she married King Henry II. It is said that Catherine loved spinach and made sure her cooks served it at every meal. Because of this, even today, meals that are made with spinach are often known as “Florentine” in honor of the birthplace of Catherine de’ Medici.

Archive photos: For SU guard Buddy Boeheim, it’s been a lifetime in Orange (PS; $; Waters)

Buddy Boeheim was born into the Syracuse basketball family.

Jackson Thomas “Buddy’' Boeheim was born in November of 1999, a few minutes after his twin sister, Jamie, who is known as Sissy. Their brother, Jimmy, was older by two years.

Now a 6-foot-6 junior guard who is leading Syracuse into the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16, back then Buddy Boeheim was just a little kid who loved the basketball team that his dad coached.

Now, Buddy Boeheim not only plays for the team that he grew up cheering for, but he also plays for his father, Jim, who is now in his 45th year as Syracuse’s head coach.

With some help from Juli Boeheim, here is a look at Buddy Boeheim’s life in Orange.

Juli: That’s our famous playroom that’s now my office. There were lots of brawls in that room. They have all the other toys that you can see but the hoop got the most use.

There were some tears, too. I’d say, ‘No more playing unless Dad refs.’ That would help a little bit.

As they grew, the toys left, but the hoop remained. They’d play in here. Finally, a window was broken and there was a hole in the wall and I said, ‘Enough.’

'Buckets' T-shirts hit Syracuse store shelves as Orange excitement hits fever pitch (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

You know it's Syracuse Basketball fever in the NCAA Tournament when t-shirts start hitting store shelves.

That's exactly what we saw from area favorite "Holy Shirt" for a number of years. From epic classics like the "Overrated?!" shirts in honor of Gerry McNamara and the "Marathon Men" shirt in honor of the 6-overtime Big East Tournament win over UConn, Holy Shirt has made their mark on Orange lore.

And guess what? They're back.

Undoubtedly, the feel-good story of this NCAA Tournament especially for Syracuse has been the emergence of Buddy Boeheim or Buddy "Buckets".

So Holy Shirt has made the t-shirts seen here in Orange and Blue that just says "Buckets".

They can't use Buddy's name, image or likeness (jersey number) so "Buckets" is as close as they can get to honor the hometown hero while staying within NCAA rules.

Juli Boeheim relishing Buddy Buckets’ Sweet 16 run with Syracuse (nypost.com; Serby)

The coach’s wife lives and dies with every bounce of the basketball. And it has been this way for Juli Boeheim for 23 years.

But this time is different. Because this time, the star player on Jim Boeheim’s latest Sweet 16 Syracuse team is her younger son, Buddy.

“To me,” Juli Boeheim told The Post, “Buddy is just a big kid, a big, fun-loving, SpongeBob-loving kid. So now I see Buddy Buckets, I’m like, ‘What?’ ”

She is an angel of a lady, ask just about anyone who’s met her, and she is in hoop heaven back in Fayetteville, N.Y., watching Buddy realize his childhood dream on the biggest college basketball stage, playing for his father, playing for Syracuse, getting his father another March Madness run that no one was expecting.

“It’s unbelievable,” Juli said, “and as a mother, a mom’s joy for her kids, no matter what they’re doing, if they’re doing things right and well and overachieving and shining, I mean … my heart’s gonna burst. Just overjoyed, that this kid has worked so hard to get this, is just everything. I just love it.

UH's DeJon Jarreau eyes Syracuse, says hip 'feels fine' (houstonchronicle.com; $; Duarte)

DeJon Jarreau sat in a section of seats along the outfield wall at Victory Field, home of the Class AAA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, as his teammates roamed the outfield grass, playing cornhole and tossing a football.

A few hours later, in a video posted on UH’s social media account, Jarreau swung a driver during an outing at TopGolf.

The swing needs work.

But hey, how’s the most talked-about hip among the remaining 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament feel?
“It feels fine,” Jarreau said Thursday in a Zoom call with reporters “I’m ready for the game.”
In his first update since playing through visible pain in a second-round win over Rutgers, Jarreau said he has benefited from more than half a week’s worth of rest and treatment and will have no limitations when the second-seeded Cougars play 11th-seeded Syracuse on Saturday night in the Sweet 16.

Syracuse's glue -- forward-turned-center Marek Dolezaj | FOX Sports (foxsports.com)

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has seen a thing or two in his 45 seasons at his alma mater, and he's normally somewhat reserved in heaping excessive praise on his players. He's made an exception for senior Marek Dolezaj.

“He’s by far the most valuable player on our team. It’s not even close. He’s just a tremendous player,” Boeheim said. “It’s hard to even — you can’t even look at the stat sheet because his importance is so much more. I mean, he has a good stat sheet, but his importance to our team is so much.”

Dolezaj's role this season was altered in the blink of an eye just four minutes into the opener against Bryant in late November. Starting center Bourama Sidibe suffered a knee injury that effectively ended his season (he hass only played 11 minutes since) and the rail-thin, 6-foot-10 forward from Slovakia replaced him in Boeheim's signature zone defense.

To say that

The Orange had built an 11-point lead early in the period thanks to slick passes from Dolezaj that set up junior guard Buddy Boeheim for a pair of 3s. After Dolezaj went to the bench, backup center Jesse Edwards quickly picked up his fourth foul, so back in went Dolezaj and out went the Mountaineers from the NCAA Tournament as the 11th-seeded Orange (18-9) earned a berth in the round of 16 on Saturday night against third-seeded Houston (26-3).

How can Syracuse basketball beat Houston in the Sweet 16? - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

The Cougars play man-to-man, preferring not to switch on defense, but chase on screen action off the ball, either trailing or going underneath, just as first round opponent San Diego State did. However, Houston plays a much more adrenalized style than the Aztecs, doubling aggressively in the post and on the perimeter in pick-and-roll action. defense fully rotates behind the double team, creating a passing lane for the most difficult pass. The Cougars then lie in wait for steals.

However, the double teams do not always stay, as the second defender will sometimes return to his original assignment of the ballhandler remains patient and in control of the ball, perhaps backing away from the double team. The rotations then reverse, taking defenders back to their primary assignments.

This ultra-aggressive defense eats up chunks of the shot clock by not allowing ballhandlers to be comfortable and those double-teams force safer passes away from the basket, whether returning the ball from the post to the perimeter or forcing side-to-side passing on the perimeter instead of allowing opponents to get into the interior. In addition to the traditional double-teams in the post, perimeter players will cheat down to swipe at the ball, looking to create turnovers.

Syracuse basketball, dead in water a month ago, peaking at the right time (itlh; Adler)

Toward the end of February, Syracuse basketball had just lost tough road games to both Duke and Georgia Tech. The 2020-21 regular season was winding down, and the Orange was pretty far removed from the Big Dance bubble, according to the majority of bracketologists.

It proved pretty simple for the ‘Cuse at that juncture in the campaign. The Orange had to defeat North Carolina and Clemson, each on the Hill, to have any shot of getting into the 2021 NCAA Tournament, save for winning the Atlantic Coast Conference’s post-season tournament.

Syracuse basketball gutted out a two-point victory over the Tar Heels, a team that has owned the Orange in recent years. The ‘Cuse then smoked the Tigers to pick up some much-needed momentum heading into the ACC Tournament.

In that event’s second round, Syracuse basketball crushed a red-shot N.C. State squad, and then the Orange played No. 1 seed Virginia even until the final possession, when the Cavaliers hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to prevail.

Still, with a 3-1 mark in those four contests, the ‘Cuse entered Selection Sunday with a solid 16-9 record and a NET ranking of around No. 40 nationally.

Syracuse basketball massive long-shot to win it all, and that works perfectly (itlh; Adler)

Like the bevy of Syracuse basketball fans, I’m ecstatic that the Orange is playing in the Sweet 16 of the 2021 Big Dance, with the ‘Cuse set to battle No. 2 seed Houston on Saturday night.

Naturally, I hope that the Orange can continue its magical run through this March Madness and, ultimately, cut down the nets in early April.

Of course, that is a daunting task, and the ‘Cuse faces extremely slim odds of winning this NCAA Tournament. But the way that the Orange has played of late, I wouldn’t count Syracuse basketball out of any duel that it encounters in the regional semi-finals or beyond.

The ‘Cuse always seems to thrive when it is the underdog. San Diego State, a No. 6 seed, was favored over the Orange in the round of 64. The same goes for No. 3 seed West Virginia in the round of 32. It’s all good. That didn’t faze Syracuse basketball in the least.

In the Sweet 16, Houston is favored by about six points over the ‘Cuse, according to odds-makers. Without question, the Cougars are a really difficult match-up for the Orange.

Help wanted: Why CNY restaurants are struggling to find staff (PS; $; Cazentre)

Need a job? Try heading to your nearest restaurant. It seems they’re all looking for help these days.

“We use to have people clawing for jobs, and scratching for extra hours,” said Tom Taylor, owner of Sammy Malone’s bar and restaurant in Baldwinsville. “Not anymore.”

Restaurants across Central New York have been posting help wanted messages to social media for weeks. They need servers, cooks, bartenders and other staff.

At Indeed.com, a site that posts job openings, there are more than 250 current listings for cooks within a 25-mile radius of Syracuse. Another 100 openings are listed for restaurant servers, and more than 50 for bartenders.

The local cook positions at Indeed.com appear to start mostly at about $15 an hour, ranging in some cases up to about $20 per hour. Server jobs often pay less, but those positions do allow people to take tips.

The shortage of workers is not due to low unemployment: The jobless rate in the Syracuse area was 7.2% in January, the most recent month reported by the state Labor Department. That’s up from 4.8% in January 2020, before the pandemic hit.
