The NCAA has strict rules for spring practices
Teams get a maximum of 15 spring practice days, including the intra-squad game that typically caps a spring slate. This doesn't include sessions when players are limited to the film room or the weight room. Everything has to take place within a 34-day window, but spring break and exam days don't automatically count toward that. So some schools spread spring practices over a month and a half.
Teams are allowed to have practices over their schools' spring breaks. Currently, there's no geographic restriction, which is why Jim Harbaugh was able to take Michigan to Bradenton, Florida, for practices last year. But in response, the Power 5 conferences instituted a ban on off-campus vacation practices, and that goes into effect before 2018. Harbaugh's going to work around this as much as he can, including by taking Michigan to Rome this spring, before the ban is active.
Only 12 of a team's 15 practices can have contact, and the first two must be non-contact. Of those 12, only eight can involve full-fledged tackling. Of those eight, only three can devote more than half their time to 11-on-11 scrimmaging, and the spring game counts as one of those three. So teams only get two pure practices of 11-on-11 scrimmaging.
Practices aren't supposed to run for more than four hours per day or 20 hours per week, so coaches need to apportion time wisely. If they don't, it's a compliance violation.

Syracuse basketball has already lost two players to the transfer portal and another is testing the NBA Draft waters. Jim Boeheim recently stated on ESPN Radio that he expects the program to lose four to six players. That will force the Orange to recruit the portal in order to fill the roster.
Who are some players currently in the portal who make sense? Here are some potential options, depending on who else leaves.
Guard Symir Torrence (Marquette): A 6-3 guard who is a Syracuse native makes a ton of sense if the Orange wish to add a guard to the roster. Torrence played AAU ball with Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard as well. He played sparingly at Marquette, but still has three years of eligibility remaining. Held a Syracuse offer out of high school.
Guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. (Minnesota): A 6-2 combo guard, Mashburn Jr. played 22 minutes per game as a true freshman. He has great bloodlines and played at Brewster Academy, a school the Syracuse coaches have recruited well over the years. If Syracuse loses Kadary Richmond to the transfer portal, he would be a solid replacement.
Guard Tyon Grant-Foster (Kansas): A former top JUCO prospect, the 6-7 guard has tremendous length for the position. He still has two years of eligibility remaining after averaging eight minutes in 22 appearances at Kansas this past season. His length would make him intriguing in the zone if Syracuse wanted to add to its back court.

The transfer portal is growing rapidly. Soon it will swell even more. Players will be granted an extra year of eligibility, and all first-time transfers are expected to gain immediate eligibility. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has said he expects players to transfer out, and his staff will survey the portal for targets that project as good fits in the system. The Hall of Famer predicted it will be a “free agency like” offseason. Buckle up.
One potential Syracuse target entered his name in the portal on Nov. 17 and lives under the same roof as the head coach. According to a handful of people close to the team, there’s growing optimism that Jimmy Boeheim, Cornell’s top player, could transfer to Syracuse. This isn’t a 100 percent lock, and Boeheim could opt to play elsewhere for his final year of eligibility. It simply means his transfer decision bears watching as the Orange begin to piece together their roster for the 2021-22 season.
How Boeheim would fit in along with another newcomer — five-star forward Benny Williams — is interesting. But that’s a dynamic worth discussing another day, should he choose to announce he’d play alongside his brother and father. As Syracuse comes off a 18-10 regular season (9-7 in the ACC) and a Sweet 16 loss to Houston in the NCAA Tournament, it’s time to make sense of the offseason, possible roster movement and the path ahead.

Item: Following the season ending loss to Houston in the Sweet 16, Jim Boeheim alluded to the changes that will be coming to the program’s 2021-22 roster, both additions and subtractions. The new transfer portal era in college basketball allowing for immediate eligibility, means there’s an influx of Syracuse players testing the waters to ascertain if the “grass is greener” (more playing time awaits) somewhere else.
It didn’t take long. Two days after the season finale, already two Syracuse players, John Bol Ajak and Robert Braswell on Monday announced their intention to enter the portal, and according to multiple reports, Quincy Guerrier plans to test the NBA waters before making a decision on his playing future.
Now speculation amongst Orange Nation centers around whether Woody Newton, Frank Anselem, and perhaps Alan Griffin will join Ajak and Braswell in the portal.
“We’ll have guys leave, it’s what’s going to happen,” Jim Boeheim said after the season’s last game, correctly predicting the future. “In the next two to three weeks, as things happen, we’re going to have to adjust to it and start recruiting in the transfer portal because we’ll have guys in there.”
It was a pipe dream that all the anticipated returnees on the Orange basketball roster would decide to stay put for next season. Even with the losses of the players mentioned above, SU will be in pretty good shape talent-wise with a veteran squad that won two NCAA tournament games, and some experienced college players expected to transfer in reverse to the ‘Cuse from other programs.

A Syracuse basketball season unlike any other has come to a close. After putting together a late-season run to get onto the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, the Orange advanced to its 20th Sweet 16 under head coach Jim Boeheim.
But facing one of the most balanced teams in the country, Houston, SU watched its March run come to an end on Saturday night. The 11th-seeded Orange lost to the second-seeded Cougars 62-46 as UH's DeJon Jarreau blanketed the red-hot Buddy Boeheim. Syracuse scored the fewest points it ever has in the Big Dance, also recording season-lows in points and field-goal percentage.
"I thought that Houston was tremendous defensively," the older Boeheim said in his postgame press conference. "I thought we did a great job fighting back, getting back just before the half. And we gave them two buckets before the half. And it was two breakdowns. But their defense was just too much for us. We missed some opportunities. But I just give 90% of the credit to their defense. They're really a good defensive team."

In the aftermath of Syracuse basketball falling to Houston in the Sweet 16 on Saturday evening, attention immediately turned to what the Orange roster might look like next season.
Given that NCAA officials are expected to pass a measure that would allow Division I basketball players to transfer once without having to sit out a year, the upcoming off-season should prove frenetic for the ‘Cuse and other teams around the country.
Head coach Jim Boeheim has already said that he thinks the Orange will see a sizable roster shake-up ahead of the 2021-22 term, with some players leaving and the coaching staff eyeing the transfer portal for possible pick-ups.
The squad’s two seniors, power forward/center Marek Dolezaj and center Bourama Sidibe, have to decide whether they will come back for an extra stanza allowed by the NCAA amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Some players may elect to test the NBA Draft waters, whether it’s junior forward Alan Griffin or sophomore forward Quincy Guerrier. Griffin, though, struggled mightily in the 2021 Big Dance, and I believe that Guerrier would have a monster junior season if he returns to the Hill.
Syracuse basketball could have quite a different line-up in 2021-22.
The ‘Cuse currently has 13 scholarship players, those two seniors and incoming 2021 commit Benny Williams, a five-star forward. There is a lot of chatter online about the potential of Boeheim’s older son, Jimmy Boeheim, suiting up for the Orange. Boeheim, a forward, has competed for Cornell.
Junior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim has garnered some NBA Draft buzz, but I expect him to return. Syracuse basketball chat rooms are filled with talk about the future of freshman combo guard Kadary Richmond and sophomore point guard Joe Girard III. I imagine that at least one of them will be back for 2021-22.
Redshirt sophomore forward Robert Braswell played really well at the end of the term, with increased minutes, so I think he will return. But speculation is also pretty extensive regarding the possibility of freshman forward Woody Newton transferring out.

The magic is over. Syracuse fell to Houston in the Sweet 16 over the weekend. The loss wraps up the Orange’s 2020-21 season, which went better than expected. Back in November, the Fizz handed out preseason awards. So, now it’s time to give our postseason awards.

And then there were eight. The Elite 8.
Four more teams -- Gonzaga, USC, Michigan and UCLA -- stayed alive in the NCAA tournament on Sunday.
The Elite 8 round begins Monday night. Oregon State faces Houston at 7:15 p.m. and Baylor takes on Arkansas at 9:57 p.m. Both games are on CBS.

The redevelopment of a long-vacant office building overlooking Firefighters Memorial Park is set to get under way soon.
Developer Grazi Zazzara Jr. told the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency last week that he is ready to begin work on the building at 444 E. Genesee St. as soon as the agency votes on his request for tax breaks for the $4.1 million project.
Zazzara said it will take about nine months to complete the building’s transformation.
He first announced his plans in January 2020 to turn the upper three floors of the building into a total of 24 one-bedroom apartments and retail space on the first floor.
Zazzara is requesting a mortgage tax exemption of $29,942, a sales tax exemption worth $151,400 on construction materials and a 15-year payment-in-lieu-of-tax agreement, the value of which will be determined after the project is reviewed by the city assessor, said Judy DeLaney, the agency’s executive director.
Built in 1960 on the southwest corner of East Genesee and South Townsend streets, the building has been vacant for about 25 years.
