Welcome to Patriot's Day!

Patriots' Day is a holiday commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord, which took place on April 19, 1775. The shots fired at these two cities on the outskirts of Boston were the first shots of the American Revolution. Following the war, Lexington Day and Concord Day began being celebrated in their respective cities. The cities later petitioned Massachusetts Governor Frederic Greenhalge to create a state commemoration. He created Patriots' Day, which replaced Fast Day. It was first celebrated on April 19, 1894. The new holiday also originally commemorated the anniversary of the Baltimore riot of 1861, where some of the first bloodshed of the Civil War took place, and four members of the Massachusetts militia died. In 1938, the Massachusetts legislature passed a bill making the battles of Lexington and Concord the sole focus of the day.

Until 1969, the holiday was celebrated on the actual anniversary of the battles, but it since has been observed on the third Monday of April in most states that officially commemorate it. As of 2018, it is a state holiday in Maine and Massachusetts. Schools in Wisconsin observe it on April 19 (if it's a weekday) by having students learn about the battles and their importance to American history. Those in Florida are encouraged to celebrate the day, although it isn't an official holiday there. Connecticut began officially observing the day in 2018.

What’s the Roster Outlook for Syracuse After a Busy Start to the Offseason? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)

For Syracuse basketball, the past few weeks have been a whirlwind. There have been newcomers, departures and a couple of surprises sprinkled in. If you’ve lost track of what the team is looking like heading into next season, I don’t blame you.

Let’s break all the moves down and analyze where things stand for the program.

Two transfers have hurt the most for Syracuse so far. Freshman Kadary Richmond (G) transferred to Seton Hall, and freshman Woody Newton (F) departed for Oklahoma State. The loss of Richmond definitely stings after he played a major role off the bench in 2020-2021, and Woody Newton’s talent is still undeniable given that he was the #4 overall class of 2020 prospect in Maryland.

At guard, Syracuse now looks to Marquette sophomore guard transfer Symir Torrence (6’3 200 lbs). Torrence has good ability – he earned a four-star rating as a prospect in the class of 2020 – but he only played 13 minutes per game across 24 appearances last year. If Torrence can come in and be a sparkplug like Richmond was, it’ll go a long way in deciding how deep into the season SU plays.

Jim Boeheim's Latest Player Signing Might Signal His Impending Retirement at Syracuse University - Sportscasting | Pure Sports (sportscasting.com; Moriello)

There has been a Boeheim in the college basketball program at Syracuse University since Jim Boeheim returned to his alma mater in 1969 as a graduate assistant. There have been two Boeheims there the past years seasons as Buddy Boeheim has made 62 starts at guard.

Father and son will have company for the 2021-22 ACC basketball season. Jimmy Boeheim will join his brother on the roster as a transfer from the Ivy League.

It should make for a memorable season in Central New York, but it will likely also mark the end of an era.

Most of Jim Boeheim’s life has been spent in Syracuse

Even without the 101 victories that the NCAA stripped from his record over rules infractions, Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim has won 982 games as the head coach of the Orange. The high point came in 2003 as freshman Carmelo Anthony led the team to the NCAA Tournament championship.

Boeheim’s history at Syracuse University began in 1962 as a player alongside future NBA great Dave Bing. After a brief career in the Eastern Professional Basketball League, Boeheim returned to SU in 1969 as an assistant to coach Roy Danforth.

When Danforth left in 1976 to coach and run the athletic department at Tulane, Syracuse promoted Boeheim. Freshmen Louis Orr and Roosevelt Bouie – “The Louie and Bouie Show” – led his first team to a 26-4 record and a spot in the NCAA Sweet 16, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee never left.

Boeheim, 76, just completed his 45th season as the head coach, finishing 18-10 and once again taking the Orange to the Sweet 16.

ACC Roundup: Some Catching Up (DBR; King)

Here are a few ACC links as we move more into the off-season, and by that we mean past the coaching carousel and most of the transfer portal craziness.

We see how various ACC schools did with transfers, get a closer look at Sooner-to-Tar Heel Brady Malek and a fair amount of Syracuse news.

We also found a link about BC getting TJ Bickerstaff out of Drexel. If the name sounds familiar, he comes from a basketball family. His uncle, JB, coaches the Cavaliers and his grandfather, Bernie, was a coach and GM for many years. Plus his dad played football at NCCU.

He won’t be enough to make up for everyone BC has lost though so look for new coach Earl Grant to keep working the portal.
