Welcome to Chinese Language Day!

Language Days at the United Nations seek to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization. Under the initiative, UN duty stations around the world celebrate six separate days, each dedicated to one of the Organization's six official languages.

Why April 20?
The date for the Chinese day was selected from Guyu ("Rain of Millet"), which is the 6th of 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendars, to pay tribute to Cangjie. Cangjie is a very important figure in ancient China, claimed to be an official historian of the Yellow Emperor and the inventor of Chinese characters. Legend has it that he had four eyes and four pupils, and that when he invented the characters, the deities and ghosts cried and the sky rained millet. From then on, Chinese people celebrate the day Guyu in honour of Cangjie. In the Gregorian calendar, it usually begins around April 20.

Chinese at the UN

Chinese was established as an official language of the United Nations in 1946. However, in early years, Chinese was not commonly used in the work of the United Nations. The situation was improved after restoration of the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations in 1971. In 1973, the General Assembly included Chinese as a working language, which was followed by the Security Council in 1974. More and more UN offices and staff members work with Chinese language.

IHO: Jimmy Boeheim brings 'hard-nosed' style to Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

On Friday, Cornell forward Jimmy Boeheim confirmed rumors that have been floating around for months, announcing his transfer to Syracuse, reuniting him with his father, head coach Jim Boeheim, and his younger brother, guard Buddy Boeheim.

With the news in mind, we sat down with Ivy Hoops Online editor Michael Tony, who covered Jimmy Boeheim throughout his three years in Ithaca. Here’s what he had to say:

The Juice Online: Tell us about IvyHoopsOnline.

Michael Tony: IvyHoopsOnline is a blog that has provided a colorful take on Ivy League basketball since 2011.

TJO: What kind of player is Jimmy Boeheim?

MT: One that Orange fans should feel very lucky is in the family. Boeheim is a hard-nosed, versatile forward who improved substantially in each of his three seasons at Cornell before becoming the Big Red’s leading scorer and rebounder in 2019-20.

TJO: After shooting 35.0 percent from 3-point land in his sophomore season, he shot below 29.5 percent junior year. Was that because he was the top option on the Big Red and more heavily covered?

MT: Boeheim has never been an elite shooter, and after Matt Morgan graduated in 2019, Boeheim became the Big Red’s number one scoring threat, drawing greater attention from defenses. Boeheim had a woeful 7-for-35 (20 percent) three-point shooting stretch in non-conference play but fared better from beyond the arc after that, even against analytically savvy Ivy defenses intent on driving shooters off the 3-point line, so don’t fret over Boeheim having a sub-30 percent year from deep.

There's been some speculation that Jimmy Boeheim's arrival might lead Jim Boeheim to retire after this season. But the guys want to end that speculation now because it won't happen. Plus, they address Boeheim's comments with Brent Axe in regards to Bourama Sidibe's health and Kadary Richmond's shooting leash. Also, why can't Syracuse football do the bare minimum of hosting a spring game and release a depth chart in an offseason where there is actually a lot of buzz around the program?

Duke Recruiting: Jaylen Blakes Is A Blue Devil (DBR; King)

More good recruiting news: Jaylen Blakes, a 6-2, 195 lb. guard out of New Jersey’s Blair Academy, has committed to Duke.

That gives the Blue Devils one more backcourt guy and increases depth and versatility.

He’s seen as a point guard and earlier reports suggested that Duke fell in love with his toughness and character.

He’ll be a solid replacement for Jordan Goldwire, who has now committed to Oklahoma.

Duke’s recruiting haul is now up to four: Blakes, 6-9 Paolo Banchero, 6-7 AJ Griffin and mostly recently, 6-5 Trevor Keels.

Add in transfers Bates Jones, a 6-8 graduate (to be) of Davidson and younger brother of former Duke QB Daniel Jones, and 6-9 Theo John, who played for Steve Wojciechowski at Marquette, and Duke’s team is looking really solid for next season.

US Marine Corps turns to CNY fashion designer for new fitness uniforms (PS; $; Weiner)

A small Central New York fashion design firm has won a $46.8 million contract from the U.S. Marine Corps to produce a new line of fitness training uniforms for service members.

American Fashion Network of DeWitt will supply the Marines with up to 1.8 million T-shirts and shorts over the course of the five-year contract.

The woman-owned small business was among four companies that won contracts to supply lightweight, breathable physical training clothes to the Marines, according to the Department of Defense.

All told, 17 companies submitted competitive bids for the deal, Pentagon officials said.

Jackie Wilson, owner and CEO of American Fashion Network, said it’s the single biggest federal contract her fashion design firm has received since she spun it off from a partnership in 2011.

“It’s a wonderful order,” Wilson told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. “I have so much pride to be able to be outfitting the U.S. Marine Corps.”

Until now, Wilson’s top customers have been mid-tier retailers Kohls, JC Penney, American Eagle Outfitters and Belk.

The federal contract has already allowed American Fashion Network to hire five new employees at its design studio and the company will seek to fill three more openings in DeWitt, Wilson said.
