English is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN). In February 2010, the UN created six language days "to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization." The days were also created "to increase awareness and respect for the history, culture and achievements of each of the six working languages among the UN community." The creation of the days was part of the 2010 International Mother Language Day. Besides English, there are days that honor the Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, and Spanish languages. Events are held at the UN Headquarters each year, and the day is celebrated at other UN locations—known as duty stations—around the world.
April 23 was chosen for the holiday's date because it is the observed birthday and death date of William Shakespeare, who is seen by many as the greatest writer of the English language. True to its name, the language originated in England. Similar in form to Frisian, Dutch, and German, it is a West Germanic language and is part of the Indo-European language family. English is known as a "world language" because it is so widely spoken; about 2 billion people—close to a third of the world's population—can speak it. It is the main language used in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and some island nations in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is an official language in some other countries, including South Africa, India, the Philippines, and Singapore.

This will be Syracuse basketball's most talented roster in four years - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)
Around this time last year, I argued that talent was slowly returning to Syracuse after the program was hit by sanctions in 2015.
In a nutshell, prior to 2015, the Orange’s rotation players all averaged around 95, which is when the program was at the height of its power. Syracuse was ranked No. 1 in two separate seasons from 2010-2015, and also had postseason success with an Elite 8 and Final 4 run during that time period.
Following an initial grace period with sanctions, Syracuse’s talent predictably dipped. At its worst, its average rotation player dipped to 89, an unprecedented decline for one of the northeast’s elite programs. It’s resulted in Syracuse being a bubble team for the last six seasons. And while 2016’s Final Four run was certainly nice, there’s no arguing that Syracuse’s recruiting and win totals have dropped during this time, which is encapsulated in this chart:
The good news is that with sanctions finally behind it, the talent level has started to pick up.
On the 2020-21 roster, Syracuse only had one player ranked inside the top 100 recruits on the entire roster according to 247 Sports: Kadary Richmond (90). On paper, Syracuse has improved in this category significantly in the offseason, adding freshman Benny Williams (27) and transfers Cole Swider (44th in the class of 2018) and Symir Torrence (75th in 2020).

Syracuse basketball and Cole Swider vs. Villanova at MSG – yes, please! (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball and former Big East Conference rival Villanova are planning to battle one another this upcoming season in New York City, according to a report, which means that new Orange commit Cole Swider will have an opportunity to compete against his former team.
CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein sent out a tweet that, per his sources, the ‘Cuse and the Wildcats will play in the 2021 Jimmy V Classic at the famed Madison Square Garden. According to Rothstein, a second game in this event is presently to be determined.
What a fabulous encounter for Syracuse basketball in its 2021-22 campaign. Not only is Villanova a former long-time Big East foe of the Orange, but the Wildcats are also expected to field an excellent squad next season.
Villanova’s stellar senior point guard, Collin Gillespie, recently announced that he would come back to the Wildcats for a fifth term. Based on the Gillespie news and other recent roster developments for Villanova, the Wildcats are pegged as a pre-season top-10 group heading into 2021-22, according to a range of national analysts and journalists.

Former SU basketball star Oshae Brissett has big night for Pacers (PS; $; Curtis)
Oshae Brissett spent most of his time at the forward position during his two-year tenure with Syracuse.
But on Wednesday, just days after he secured a long-term contract with the Indiana Pacers, the 6-foot-6 wing started at center.
Brissett made his second consecutive start Wednesday and posted career highs in almost every major statistical category (23 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 42 minutes) to lead the Pacers to a 122-116 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It was his most impressive performance since joining the franchise that rewarded him with a three-year deal on Tuesday. He previously had two 10-day contracts with the team.
After the game, Brissett said he never imagined reaching those numbers about a month ago when he was a free agent.
“Honestly, I came in here with high hopes and I knew the work that I put in was going to pay off, but to this extent, it’s crazy,” Brissett said during his postgame interview.

Safe Travels: These 2 places are the best in Upstate NY to see migrating raptors each spring (PS; $; Figura)
There’s something special about looking up in the sky on a spring day and seeing scores upon scores of soaring, migrating hawks, falcons and eagles flying overhead.
It doesn’t happen every day, but when it does it’s a stunning sight, said Daena Ford, president of the Braddock Bay Raptor Research Center in Greece, N.Y., just northwest of the city Rochester on the southern shore of Lake Ontario.
“Raptors just have this appeal. They symbolize power, grace and strength, even for people that are not birders. Watching them in the sky is a great way to get people hooked on nature,” she said.
Braddock Bay, located on the grounds of Braddock Bay Park, is one of New York State’s two, main spring “hawk watching” areas on the Lake Ontario shore for observing migrating raptors. The other is Derby Hill Bird Observatory, located on Mexico Bay, just east of the city of Oswego.
Both locations have a paid counter from March 1 to May 31, noting the numbers and species of raptors flying by each day. The numbers are posted on a board for visitors to see, which includes numbers of birds to date and past records of daily flights of each species.
