Welcome to Audubon Day!
John James Audubon, born on today's date in 1785, was the foremost wildlife illustrator in the United States for half a century, mainly focusing on ornithological paintings. He was born in Saint Domingue, a French colony that is now Haiti. His parents were a French naval officer and his mistress. His mother died shortly after he was born, and he was raised in France by his father and stepmother. In 1803, he came to America and lived at the family estate in Mill Grove, Pennsylvania, where he studied, drew birds, and met his wife, Lucy. He experimented with bird banding, being the first person known to have done so in North America. He and Lucy moved to Kentucky and started a family. He continued to draw birds as a hobby and owned a store until going bankrupt in 1819.
He wanted to try something new, so the following year he floated down the Mississippi River on a flatboat, with the intention of finding new birds to paint. He was successful and brought his work to England in 1826, where it was well received. He found a printer, and The Birds of America was published as a series between 1827 and 1838. It included 435 watercolor plates and was printed in a very large book format called "elephant folio." This was done so that the paintings would be life-size representations of the birds. The book set the template for other wildlife illustrations, and more recent bird artists are often measured against it.

As part of the second-annual virtual '2021 Basket Ball' hosted by Jim and Juli Boeheim at Turning Stone Resort Casino, Syracuse basketball stars Eric Devendorf and Mookie Jones got together for a friendly game of HORSE against some front line workers.

Jim and Juli Boeheim Basket Ball returns, features video of Buddy and Jimmy as they raid dad’s office (PS; $; Curtis)
Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim and his wife, Juli, hosted the 22nd edition of their annual Basket Ball event in a virtual format for the second consecutive year, but this time it wasn’t from their living room.
The 2021 Jim and Juli Boeheim Basket Ball returned to Turning Stone Resort and Casino for the first time since 2019 for a night full of stories, auctions and donations to benefit the Central New York community.
The two-hour event is the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation’s only event of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was televised on WSTM-Channel 3 with local broadcasting couple Niko and Farah Tamurian as co-hosts.
“I always thought it would be fun to host a telethon like this. I didn’t think it would take 76 years to do it,” Jim Boeheim said.

ITLH Big East Power Rankings: Week 1 Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2021 commit Benny Williams will soon arrive on the Hill as one of the highest-rated recruits for the Orange program in recent memory.
Without question, ‘Cuse fans are excited for him to suit up for the Orange in the upcoming season, and I believe that the 6-foot-8 forward has an incredible opportunity to make a significant impact for Syracuse basketball in his freshman term.
Head coach Jim Boeheim has said on many occasions that recruiting rankings don’t necessarily reflect how a high-school prospect will actually perform in college, and I totally agree with him.
That being said, I’m the first to admit that I often rely on these ratings from various recruiting services to provide context in a lot of my articles. Williams, a senior at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., has attained five-star status from some recruiting Web sites, but not all of them.
Case in point, ESPN recently updated its player rankings for the 2021 class, and Williams is placed as four stars, No. 30 overall and No. 7 at power forward. This is of course my own personal take, but I think that ESPN doesn’t have Williams rated high enough in the 2021 cycle.
Syracuse basketball 2021 commit Benny Williams boasts an all-around excellent game.
For comparison’s sake, has Williams as five stars, No. 15 nationally and No. 5 at small forward. The 247Sports Composite also puts him as five stars, along with No. 27 overall and No. 7 at small forward....
Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Kyle Filipowski, so skilled, will soar in rankings (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball only recently offered a scholarship to 2022 four-star big man Kyle Filipowski, and recruiting analysts are giving a lot of praise to the 6-foot-10 power forward who plays prep-school ball in Massachusetts.
Since the Orange offered Filipowski, I’ve read a slew of articles about him, including reports from analysts and other insiders. In summation, Filipowski is a highly skilled big man who can do a variety of things on both ends of the floor.
Filipowski, who holds about two-dozen offers from a range of impressive high-major squads, is a junior at the Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., and suits up for the New York City-based NY Renaissance on the AAU circuit.

His head coach at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Mike Mannix, provided some insights on Filipowski in an interview with Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI.
...Mannix said in part, “His versatility at his size, you just aren’t going to find a lot of. He’s a legitimate 6-foot-10. He rebounds what seems like almost every ball. He can handle it, he can shoot it, he can post up. He was darn close to being a 40 percent three point shooter this year. Averaged 21 points a game, 13 rebounds a game. His field goal percentage is really, really high. You just get it all when you have him as a player. This year I think he was one of the hardest working guys on the team. He really kind of set the tone for us. He was certainly in the mix every night as a guy that wasn’t going to get outworked. Really coachable.”
Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Justin Taylor sets visit, blue-blood still in play (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2022 high-priority target Justin Taylor is setting up campus visits, and one of them is to the Hill, according to a recruiting analyst.
Now that NCAA officials are allowing in-person recruiting efforts to resume in the near future, high-school prospects are beginning to plan accordingly.
The 6-foot-6 Taylor, a four-star wing and top-100 player in the 2022 cycle, will take an official visit to the ‘Cuse on June 9-10, per a tweet from Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI.
This is obviously an encouraging sign for the Orange, although it’s not a surprising one. Taylor has spoken highly of the Syracuse basketball program for a while now, and recruiting insiders believe that the ‘Cuse has a strong shot at landing the junior out of the St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va.

Axe: Oshae Brissett finds new NBA home with Pacers (PS; $; Axe)
Home is where you make it.
Former Syracuse basketball star Oshae Brissett is finding that out after earning a three-year contract with the Indiana Pacers.
Brissett previously thought he had found that NBA home in his hometown of Toronto.
He played 19 games for the Raptors and plenty of minutes for Toronto’s G-League team, Raptors 905.
The irony is that spot with the hometown Raptors gave Brissett a lot of frequent flyer miles as the Covid-19 pandemic sent him all over the map.
“I’ve been in two bubbles,” Brissett said during a recent conversation on ESPN Syracuse. “The Raptors moved out to Tampa, so I wasn’t in Toronto. I was there at training camp in Florida. I’ve been all over the place.”
Brissett was waived by the Raptors in December.
Before joining the Pacers, the former Orange forward averaged 18.6 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 12 games with the Fort Wayne Mad Antz. He also earned second-team All G-League honors last season.

He learned to brew at home in CNY. Now he'll open a brewery in one of the world’s beer capitals (PS; $; Cazentre)
He made his first home-brewed batch of beer while a student at Syracuse University. He later worked as a professional brewer at small brewpubs in Syracuse and Oswego.
Now Rich White taking his beer-making talents to new heights: He’s about to open one of the first American-owned and operated craft breweries in London.
Yes, that London. The capital of the United Kingdom and one of the world’s great beer cities — the home of brown ales and porters and, according to some stories, the birthplace of the now-universal style known as IPA (India Pale Ale).
White, who grew up in the Oneida County village of Whitesboro, plans to open his brewery and taproom this summer in the north London neighborhood of Camden Town. It will be called Werewolf Beer (aka An American Brewery in London.)
“I love British beer and the beer culture here in the UK,” White said. “But I’m really excited to bring an authentic American brewery and the American beer styles I love to the heart of London.”
White graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1997, attended SU and worked in credit unions. Along the way, he became a member of the Salt City Brew Club (for homebrewers), shopped at EJ Wren Homebrew supplies in Liverpool, and had brief stints as a brewer at Syracuse Suds Factory in Armory Square and King Arthur’s Brewpub in Oswego.
Through a mutual love of beer and the British musician Frank Turner, White met Laura Emson, a native Londoner. They married in 2013.
He has been living and working in London since then. He served as head brewer for London Brewing Co. for five years before leaving to start up his own brewery.
He’s watched as London’s once traditional beer scene, with its cozy pubs and traditional ales (those so-called ‘warm and flat’ beers) has been infused with new styles, many influenced by the American craft beer industry.
White notes that there are dozens of small London breweries now making versions of the hazy, New England-style IPAs that have been the hottest trend in U.S. craft beer for the last decade.
