Today we celebrate those large, extinct reptiles: dinosaurs. Scientists believe they first appeared about 245 million years ago, at the beginning of the Middle Triassic Epoch, and existed for about 180 million years, going extinct about 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The period when they lived is called the Mesozoic Era. During this time they went through many changes, and various species of dinosaurs replaced other species. Some dinosaurs were bipedal, meaning they walked on two legs, and some were quadrupedal, meaning they walked on all fours. Some switched back and forth. Some were covered with feathers, while others had what was almost like body armor. Some ran fast, and others were slow; most were herbivores, but some were carnivores. There were at least 700 species of dinosaurs, and possibly more than 1,000.

Former SU basketball player Demetris Nichols reportedly set to return as grad assistant (DO; Alandt)
Former Syracuse forward Demetris Nichols is reportedly set to serve as the team’s graduate assistant for the 2021-22 season. While the deal has yet to be finalized, Nichols said in a phone conversation with Syracuse.com that he expects the hiring to happen.
After his senior season, the Portland Trail Blazers drafted Nichols in the second round but immediately traded him to the New York Knicks. He finished his two-year stint in the NBA playing in just 18 games, 13 of which came for the Chicago Bulls.
“I haven’t been able to sleep all week since I found out the news,” Nichols said to Syracuse.com. “The door is so narrow to get into coaching and I knew that if I was going to get into coaching, this is the time.”
This opportunity is a dream come true. I can’t explain how passionate I am to learn, help and assist these young men to reach their goals on and off the court. Orange https://t.co/9diNyGpBOg

Nichols played the majority of the 2009-19 seasons overseas, briefly joining the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the G League affiliate of the Miami Heat. But after a foot injury, Nichols, 36, said he decided to retire and pursue a career in coaching.

Orange Watch: Syracuse basketball players whose jerseys should be retired - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Item: Monday’s news that former Syracuse star Demetris Nichols has joined Jim Boeheim’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant, adds yet another ex-Orange standout to the sidelines. Nichols, who averaged a team-high 18.9 ppg in his senior season (2007) and played in 18 career NBA games during an overall 13-year professional career, will join assistants Red Autry, Gerry McNamara and Allen Griffin tutoring the 2021-22 team. The return of Nichols to the program got us thinking about the next great SU player who should be honored with a jersey retirement ceremony as soon as next year.
It’s been six seasons since Syracuse honored its basketball past by retiring a player’s jersey. The last time jerseys were unveiled high above the Dome was for the great duo of Roosevelt Bouie (No. 50) and Louis Orr (No. 55) in February 2015, joining the 13 other Orange greats who have been similarly saluted.
There’s obvious names of 2003 championship team members McNamara (No. 3) and Hakim Warrick (No. 1), who will one day be given a loud standing ovation during halftime of a Dome contest as their jerseys are revealed, but there are others as deserving (including Autry No. 15).
Here’s our short list of five other Syracuse players who should be considered for jersey retirement sooner than later:
Rudy Hackett (1973-75)-The star big man on Syracuse’s first final four team, Hackett hit the key jumper at the regulation buzzer to send the East Regional final against Kansas State into overtime, finishing with 28-points and 16-rebounds to help SU shock the nation. Hackett, who wore No. 45, ended his Orangemen career second in scoring and rebounding, and is currently 24th all-time in scoring, and 6th rebounding.

Syracuse Basketball: Missing on 4-star Arthur Kaluma stings, not a dagger (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball gave it a second go-round in recruiting 2021 four-star power forward Arthur Kaluma, but it just wasn’t meant to be for the Orange to land the top-50 player across the country in his cycle.
The 6-foot-8 Kaluma, a senior at Dream City Christian School in Glendale, Ariz., announced on social media that he is planning to attend Big East Conference member Creighton.
According to reports, Syracuse basketball coaches had held more than one Zoom call of late with Kaluma. His other reported finalists, besides the ‘Cuse and the Bluejays, were Arizona, Mike Hopkins-led Washington and Western Kentucky.
Previously, Syracuse basketball had also courted Kaluma. He had the Orange in his top eight before selecting UNLV. The Rebels recently had a head-coaching change, and Kaluma received a release from his commitment to UNLV, opening his recruitment back up.

Syracuse recruiting: What we’re hearing about the Orange’s 2022 class (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)
The offseason is in full swing: five transfers, a graduation, newcomers. And on the heels of a Sweet 16 run, Syracuse landed a commitment from Kamari Lands, a top-40 high school junior who projects as an ideal wing for SU. His pledge is a step forward on the recruiting front for a program that had only one former top-100 recruit on its 2020-21 roster and had not welcomed a five-star recruit to campus since 2014. Should Lands arrive on campus next year, he will be SU’s second straight top-40 freshman, following five-star forward Benny Williams, who reports for summer workouts in a few weeks.

Downtown Syracuse grocery store closes temporarily as movie continues filming (PS; $; Herbert)
A grocery store in downtown Syracuse is closed temporarily as a new movie continues filming in the area.
The Syracuse Cooperative Market announced on Facebook that it is closed for most of the day Monday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at its location inside the Salt City Market at 484 S. Salina St., across the street from the Marriott Syracuse Downtown (Hotel Syracuse). The full-service grocer is expected to reopen Monday from 4-9 p.m. and resume regular hours Tuesday.
The closure appears to be for a production shooting scenes inside, as a large amount of film equipment was seen outside the building.
When contacted by syracuse.com | The Post-Standard, a rep for the co-op would only confirm that the store would be closed until late Monday afternoon.
Eric Vinal, vice president of film, TV and entertainment for Visit Syracuse, said in a statement that “We are always excited to utilize new filming locations like Salt City Market and the Co-Op while we continue to work with neighbors like the Downtown Marriott and our partners at the City of Syracuse to make production happen.”
