Welcome to Flower Day!
Today is Flower Day! It is unknown why May 20 is the holiday's date, although there is a Flower Day that takes place at the Eastern Market in Detroit on the Sunday after Mother's Day each year, which is around May 20. Flowers are revered by people because of their beauty and smell. They are associated with romance, medicine, rituals, and religion, and are even used as a food source. They are often used at christenings, for funerals and sympathy, for weddings and parties, as corsages and boutonnieres at social functions and holidays, and as home decorations. They are also used to worship goddesses, being brought by Hindu worshippers to temples.
There are some flower vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and artichoke, and some flowers used as spices such as crocus—which produces saffron—cloves, and capers. Hops are used in beer, and dandelion and elder are used in wine. Flowers can also be used to make herbal teas.

Former Syracuse center Paschal Chukwu’s pro team in Switzerland reaches playoff semifinals (PS; $; Ditota)
Former Syracuse basketball center Paschal Chukwu’s professional team in Switzerland has reached the playoff semifinals. The first game of those semis takes place today at 2 p.m. (Eastern Time) in Fribourg. The games are streaming live on YouTube.
Chukwu plays for Massagno, which finished third in the league during the regular season with an 18-6 record. The 7-foot-2 big man averaged 8.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and blocked about 2 shots per game in the regular season. In Massagno’s close-out quarterfinal game against Lugano, a team Massagno swept, Chukwu scored 15 and grabbed 13 rebounds. He was plus-26 in that contest.
Massagno now faces Fribourg in the semis. Fribourg finished ahead of Massagno in the standings, but Massagno went 2-1 against them. In the two wins, Chukwu averaged 12 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. He found foul trouble in the other contest, played just 10 minutes and Massagno lost by 20. The Swiss semifinals are a best of three format.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange falls back a bit in latest ESPN bracketology (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball, with its roster for the upcoming season likely set for the most part, has seen seven players from a campaign ago depart, while four have joined the program.
For now, that leaves the Orange with 10 scholarship players. Some veterans, such as junior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim and sophomore point guard Joe Girard III, are returning.
The ‘Cuse has brought in three solid transfers, along with a 2021 five-star commit in forward Benny Williams out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
By and large, pre-season prognostications from national pundits deem the Orange a fringe top-25 team, and that sounds about right to me at this juncture.
With the somewhat surprising decision by sophomore forward Quincy Guerrier to continue testing the NBA Draft waters while entering into the transfer portal, that led some observers to drop Syracuse basketball in their pre-season top-25 rankings.
Additionally, ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has published a new version of his super-early mock field of 68, and he also moved the ‘Cuse down a tad.
Previously, Lunardi had the Orange as a No. 6 seed in the East Region, with the ‘Cuse facing No. 11 seed VCU in the round of 64.

Syracuse Basketball: On big NBA stage, Oshae Brissett delivers the goods (itlh; Adler)
Former Syracuse basketball player Oshae Brissett on Tuesday night helped lead the Indiana Pacers to a win in the NBA’s initial Eastern Conference play-in tournament game, and I couldn’t be happier for the role that he has carved out with the Pacers.
A two-year player for the Orange, the 6-foot-7 forward from Canada wasn’t chosen in the 2019 NBA Draft. The Toronto Raptors, a squad that captured the NBA title two seasons ago, signed Brissett as an undrafted free agent but waived him last December.
Brissett then joined the Pacers on two 10-day contracts, according to media reports, but his strong performance toward the end of the 2020-21 campaign has earned him a multi-year deal and a starting role with the NBA team.
On Tuesday evening, the No. 9 seed Indiana throttled No. 10 seed Charlotte, 144-117, from Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. With this victory, the Pacers move on to compete versus the No. 8 seed Washington Wizards in our nation’s capital on Thursday, May 20, beginning at 8 pm and with television coverage on TNT.
