elcome to Cellophane Tape Day!

In the early 1920s, Richard Gurley Drew worked at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, now known as 3M, which at the time made sandpaper. Drew delivered sandpaper samples to auto body shops and saw the frustration that car painters had when painting two-tone color cars. Surgical adhesive tape, library pastes, and homemade glues were used to hold newspapers on cars when painting, and as the papers were removed, sticking residues often remained, that ripped off some of the paint when they were peeled off.

In 1929, Drew came up with the idea of using DuPont's recently invented cellophane to make tape. Cellophane was moisture proof and was used to wrap baked goods and grocery items. He wanted to invent a tape made of cellophane that would seal cellophane packaging while blending in, so as to not be seen. The machinery that had been used for applying adhesive to masking tape didn't work with the cellophane tape, and the glue that was used in masking tape didn't look good on the transparent tape. New machines were made, and a new, clear adhesive made of oil, rubber, and resins helped create a successful clear cellophane tape. It was originally given the name Scotch Cellulose Tape and later became Scotch Transparent Tape. It was revealed and began being marketed on January 31, 1930, and its patent was published on May 27 of the same year. This is why Cellophane Tape Day is celebrated today.

Where does Syracuse basketball stand with its 2022 class? - The Juice Online (the juice; Gustin)

As Buddy Boeheim enters his final two years in Orange, it’s possible that Jim Boeheim, who has coached Syracuse since 1976, may also be heading into his final two seasons with Syracuse.

That means that the 2022 recruiting class may be the final freshman class that Boeheim ever recruits and coaches. Here’s where the class stands as of right now.

Kamari Lands, SF, 6-8: Committed

Kamari Lands is Syracuse’s biggest (and only) commit in the 2022 class, and is currently the centerpiece following the departure of Dior Johnson. Lands is a four star who is ranked eighth nationally among small forwards according to 247 Sports.

For a wing player, Lands has great length and can finish inside, while having a consistent stroke from deep. While he’s not known as a primary ball handler, Lands will still provide consistent scoring and defense in the back line of the zone for Syracuse.

No matter the prospects acquired from here on for Syracuse, Lands will be the largest and most anticipated recruit out of the group.

Chance Westry, G, 6-4

Shooting guard Chance Westry from Sierra Canyon High School is a four star guard ranked 33rd nationally. He’s being heavily pursued by Syracuse with Gerry McNamara as the lead recruiter. Other schools who have offered include Maryland, Florida, and Georgetown.

247 Sports currently has two predictions for Syracuse (though they are from early 2020), while Maryland is the other top school in consideration. Westry would be an athletic guard to pair alongside Lands and share the perimeter with Buddy Boeheim.

Justin Taylor, SF, 6-6

How will John Bol Ajak’s decision to return to SU impact Orange? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

Nothing like putting out a call for Mailbox questions and then having some news break.

On Wednesday, we learned that Syracuse center John Bol Ajak, who had put his name in the NCAA’s transfer portal two months ago, had decided to return to SU next year.

The 6-foot-10 Ajak will be a redshirt sophomore for the Orange in the 2021-22 season. His decision to return to Syracuse brings the number of scholarship players on next year’s roster to 11.

And that brings us to the question that one reader had about Ajak’s return that came in via Twitter. It leads off this week’s Mike’s Mailbox.

Q: With Jesse Edwards, Bourama Sidibe and Frank Anselem already on the roster, I’m not sure John Bol Ajak will get much playing time. Do we need him?

JTSJax on Twitter

Mike:
It was reported on Wednesday that John Bol Ajak had decided to return to Syracuse instead of transferring to another school. Ajak, a 6-10 center, appeared in 10 games last season. He will be a redshirt sophomore next year.

Ajak’s return would seem to create a bit of a glut at the center position, but I think it’s a benefit to Syracuse to get him back.

Hot Recruit Kyle Filipowski is a Throwback and Coach’s Dream – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

By now we know that Syracuse’s competition for 4-star big man Kyle Filipowski is going to be stiff. Every day seems to bring out a new blue-blood looking for his commitment. His basketball talents are one part of that reason. He’s 6’10”, has a huge wingspan, and has been making jaws drop in AAU summer action.

The other reason is his personality. He’s a late-riser on the recruiting circuit, so he hasn’t had the same recognition and hype since he’s been in middle school. That’s meant Filipowski has stayed grounded and ready for the attention, without getting lost in it. On the floor, his high school coach Mike Mannix compares him to NBA players from years ago. And in the locker room, he’s a throwback as well.

“He’s a guy that when he hangs out with the other guys and the way he responds to his teammates, you would never know that he’s the best player in terms of having any kind of air of superiority, where he would say something like, ‘I’m the best player you can’t talk to me like that,’ or ‘I deserve this or that,’ – there’s never any of that.” – Mike Mannix

He’s the ultimate team guy, says Mannix.

“Instead it is, ‘I’m the best player, so I am going to be there to support you guys, I’m the best player so in practice, I’m going to show you that I am the hardest worker.’ He takes all of the right approaches with being the best player. There is never any negative side. With him you always get his best, and then when he hangs out with the guys he is just a normal guy and normal teammate, he takes jokes and makes jokes, he just has a great time with his guys.” – Mike Mannix

Syracuse Basketball: With new additions, non-conference slate firming up (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has announced two home games against members of the Patriot League, as the Orange continues to fill out its non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2021-22 campaign.

Per separate press releases on cuse.com, Syracuse basketball will host Lafayette on Tuesday, Nov. 9, and Lehigh on Saturday, Dec. 18, from the Carrier Dome.

In their series together, the Orange and Lafayette have battled one another eight times, and Syracuse basketball has prevailed in all eight encounters versus the Leopards.

During a shortened 2020-21 term due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Lafayette compiled a 9-6 record and fell in its opening contest of the Patriot League post-season tournament.

Interestingly enough, according to cuse.com, the last instance in which these squads met occurred in 1995-96, a season in which the Orange reached the NCAA Tournament title game. Lafayette is located in Easton, Pa.

Syracuse basketball, meanwhile, is 4-0 all-time versus Lehigh, which is based in Bethlehem, Pa. Ironically, the most recent occasion when these teams squared off came in 2015-16, a campaign in which the ‘Cuse journeyed on a magical Big Dance run to the Final Four as a No. 10 seed.

A season ago, Lehigh had a mark of 4-11 and lost in its first game within the Patriot League Tournament.

The Orange also recently said that it would welcome Pace University to the Hill on Wednesday, Oct. 27, for an exhibition duel. Pace, a Division II school, has three campuses in and around New York City.

Syracuse Basketball: Looks like Orange is out for 4-star wing Ty Rodgers ()itlh; Adler)

Nothing is ever a guarantee in the fickle recruiting business until a high-school prospect commits – and sets foot on his new team’s campus – but it appears that Syracuse basketball could be out of the running for 2022 four-star wing Ty Rodgers.

Media reports recently unveiled that the 6-foot-7 Rodgers has scheduled official visits in June with Michigan, Connecticut and Purdue. I thought that the Orange not being included for a visit here was a bad sign.

Another dagger has come out in the form of a tweet from Tipton Edits, in which Rodgers says that the six squads recruiting him the hardest are Michigan, Michigan State, Connecticut, Houston, Rhode Island and Purdue.

Again, this doesn’t look so good for the ‘Cuse. Until Rodgers comes out with a list of finalists that doesn’t include Syracuse basketball, I guess you could argue that the Orange has a chance, albeit a small one.
