World UFO Day is dedicated to the existence of unidentified flying objects. First celebrated in 2001, it was created by the World UFO Day Organization. The day is often celebrated on June 24 and July 2, although The World UFO Day Organization declared July 2 to be the official day. June 24 marks the anniversary of one of the first UFO sightings in the United States, when Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine high-speed crescent-shaped objects near Mt. Rainier in Washington, in 1947. July 2 marks the anniversary of the Roswell UFO incident, which also happened in 1947.

Could Syracuse see a boost in recruiting due to the new NIL rules? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)
Everyone’s got issues. College basketball has some really big issues.
As a result, this was a big week for issues at Mike’s Mailbox. We received questions about the name, image and likeness debate, the transfer portal and much more. We’re also about to start a gift registry for Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Let’s get to it!
Q: With the new NIL ruling, do you think Syracuse recruiting would see a significant uptick? I am thinking some supporters (Adam Weitsman) would be able to give players some real nice opportunities.
Drew P.
Mike: This is a difficult question to answer. As college sports enters a new era of athletes being able to profit off their own name, images and likeness, there will be a lot of changes coming to the industry.
But what’s hard to know is whether certain schools will benefit more than others when it comes to recruiting in this new era.
My colleague Donna Ditota wrote an interesting piece on NIL as it pertains to Syracuse athletes earlier this week.
I think the NIL could help Syracuse with specific recruits. For instance, a recruit from Central New York might be able to realize more financial benefit from playing locally because his or her name is already known.
The downside for Syracuse is that other schools could use this same sales pitch on recruits in their areas of the country.

Jerami Grant, the former Syracuse basketball player who currently plays for the NBA’s Detroit Pistons, has been added to the U.S. men’s basketball team’s roster for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, according to a report.
Shams Charania, of The Athletic, reported on Twitter that Grant had been added to the USA Basketball team’s 12-man roster.
Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant has committed to Team USA for the Tokyo Summer Olympics, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

Grant, a 6-foot-8 forward, is coming off his best season since entering the NBA as a second-round pick in the 2014 draft. He averaged 22.3 points and 4.6 rebounds this past season with the Detroit Pistons.
Grant spent two seasons at Syracuse from 2012 to 2014. As a sophomore in the 2013-14 season, Grant averaged 12.1 points and led the Orange with 6.8 rebounds per game.
He turned pro after that year and waited until the second round of the NBA draft when the Philadelphia 76ers selected him with 39th overall pick.

Syracuse Basketball: Monster visit arrives with 4-star J.J. Starling in town (ithl;; Adler)
Over the past few weeks, Syracuse basketball has hosted a range of elite 2022 prospects for their official visits, and four-star point guard J.J. Starling is set to travel to the Hill on June 25-27, according to various media reports.
This is a big-time official visit for the Orange coaching staff and players, as the 6-foot-3 Starling has proven a key target for quite some time in this cycle for the ‘Cuse.
Syracuse basketball coaches offered a scholarship to Starling, who is a Central New York native, nearly two years ago. Starling has said in the past that he communicates with the Orange quite frequently, and a lot of ‘Cuse fans are hopeful that he will join the squad’s 2022 class.
But, as we’ve noted on more than one occasion of late, the competition for Starling is intense. He holds a range of high-major offers, with a recent one coming from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference participant and blue-blood school Duke.
Prior to the Blue Devils offer, Starling told Tipton Edits that he’s being recruited the hardest by 11 groups, and they were Syracuse basketball, Auburn, Alabama, blue-blood Kansas, Northwestern, Miami, Notre Dame, Maryland, Connecticut, Stanford and Penn State.
Syracuse basketball is about to get an official visit from 2022 point guard J.J. Starling.

College basketball: Syracuse coach Boeheim says new-look squad among his most experienced (yahoo.com; St Croix)
Jim Boeheim fittingly spent most of this past Sunday recruiting for the Syracuse University men's basketball team before ending the weekend with a family dinner.
The Orange head coach approaching his 46th season had already received an appropriate Father's Day gift from his two sons, Jimmy and Buddy, by getting their maximum effort through the prior two weeks of SU on-campus summer workouts.
Syracuse is about a quarter of the way through its eight-week summer program that includes the start of classes and team workouts for both new and returning players. Coaches have worked them through individual and small-group drills, akin to past summers after being barred from training last year until July 20 before strict COVID-19 protocols were implemented.
"It's an opportunity to get our new guys used to what we're doing and to get acquainted with the campus, so it's a really good learning time for them," Jim Boeheim said during a Tuesday phone interview.
"It's a big improvement over last year as to what we're able to do and what the players are able to do in the city," he added. "It's light years ahead of where we were last year at this time in terms of everyday life."

So, it’s Over. But You Knew That. – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Klein)
It's officially official. Dior Johnson is not coming to Syracuse. Thats not new. What is new is his commitment to Oregon.
That might come as a surprise to Syracuse fans. After all, the rumor was that Johnson dropped his commitment to SU because of academic struggles. For that reason, the consensus was that Johnson would take his talents to the G League, make some money, and cruise to the NBA Draft one year later. So, why Oregon? No, not because of Quincy Guerrier. Like all other recruits, it comes down to relationships. Johnson said, “The relationship I have been able to establish with Coach Altman is special and being that he is a legendary coach, I feel that learning from him on a daily basis on and off the court will be huge for my development.” That has to send a chill down SU fans’ spines. Jim Boeheim is supposed to be the legendary coach that attracts recruits. But Altman has made a name for himself, and is nationally regarded, not quite as an equal, but as a worthy adversary. Johnson wanted a legendary coach, and he knew he wasn’t limited to the “hometown team” to get that.

Another Popeyes proposed in suburbs, would be fifth location in Syracuse area (PS; $; Doran)
A new Popeyes fast-food restaurant is proposed along Route 11 in the town of Cicero.
The New Jersey-based Liberty Restaurant Group wants to build a new Popeyes at 7980 Brewerton Road (Route 11) just west of a Dairy Queen.
The parcel, which is less than an acre, is vacant. The restaurant would be 2,145 square feet, with a drive-thru and 19 parking spaces. It would be open seven days a week.
The Louisiana-style fried chicken chain is expanding in the area. A Popeyes is planned at Township 5 shopping center in Camillus, and is expected to open this fall.
This would be the fifth Popeyes in the Syracuse area.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has more than 3,100 restaurants in the U.S., including one on Brewerton Road in the town of Salina, one on Erie Boulevard East in DeWitt, one in the food court at Destiny USA and the one slated to open in Camillus.
