Taking place right before another patriotic holiday, Independence Day, Made in the USA Day encourages the manufacturing of goods in the United States and the purchasing of these American-made goods. It celebrates the companies and brands that manufacture their products in the United States, and gives consumers the opportunity to support them. Some sources point to Joel Joseph of the Made in the USA Foundation as the creator of the day, and lists the day as having its start in 1989.

Labels signifying country of origin are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). These labels are required if the product is coming from another country, but only some products made in the United States—including automobiles, furs, textiles, and wool—are required to have the labels. However, many other products are stamped with the labels, which is fine as long as they follow the FTC's Made in the USA policy, which essentially says that in order for there to be a "Made in the USA" stamp on a product, "all or virtually all" of the product must be made in the United States. "Made in the USA" can be expressed with other phrases, such as "American-made," and can also be implied by how a product is advertised, promoted, or otherwise labeled.

Buddy & Jimmy Boeheim Join Cameo (SI; McAllister)

The Name, Image and Likeness policy from the NCAA went into effect on Thursday, July 1st, and Syracuse athletes are already taking advantage of such opportunities. Syracuse basketball players Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim both joined Cameo.

What is Cameo? Its website describes the company as follows:

"Cameo is an American video-sharing website headquartered in Chicago. Cameo was created in 2016 by Steven Galanis, Martin Blencowe, and Devon Spinnler Townsend. The site allows celebrities to send personalized video messages to fans. As of May 2020, more than 30,000 celebrities have joined the platform."

For $60, you can have Buddy or Jimmy send a personalized message to a friend or family member. Head coach Jim Boeheim has been on Cameo for a while, but costs $200 for a personalized message. There are several former Syracuse stars on Camelo as well, and even Otto the Orange (for a $44 fee).

The Boeheims are taking advantage of the new NIL rules. Student-athletes can be paid for endorsing products including on social media, charging for autographs, holding skills camps and other methods. This, of course, as long as it follows state NIL laws. If a state does not have NIL laws in place, it is up to the individual institution to provide parameters.

The NCAA's interim policy will be in affect until federal legislation is passed or new NCAA rules are implemented.

That’s now possible because of new Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) rules that allow college athletes to make money without jeopardizing their playing eligibility.

The Boeheims, now teammates at SU, announced their availability on Cameo, a site that facilitates interactions between celebrities and their fans. It will cost $60 to chat up the Syracuse basketball brothers.

Syracuse Basketball: Transfer portal to greatly alter high-school recruiting (itlh; Adler)


Several weeks ago, Syracuse basketball coaches and their peers around the country were able to watch high-school prospects in person for the first instance in a long time, given the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Additionally, college coaches could begin making direct communication with players in the 2023 class; these prospects just finished up their sophomore years in high school.

While those two developments have resulted in scholarship offers being doled out to high-school prospects in the 2023 cycle and other classes, some analysts are suggesting that the NCAA’s new transfer policy is going to change how college coaches recruit high-school players moving forward in a big-time way.

As has been widely reported, the NCAA has adopted a new policy whereby student-athletes in all sports, including college basketball, can transfer once while still retaining immediate eligibility.

That, in turn, has caused a free-agency explosion in collegiate hoops. Orange head coach Jim Boeheim has said that the NCAA measure would result in college players transferring right and left, and he was right.

The ‘Cuse hasn’t been immune to this, with multiple guys transferring into and out of the program of late following the 2020-21 campaign. This is expected to regularly occur in Division I men’s basketball on an annual basis from now on, unless NCAA officials were to further revamp their transfer policy.

Syracuse Athletics is already trying to get behind the wheel of the runaway train that name, image and likeness could be for the NCAA. SU announced a partnership with INFLCR (pronounced “Influencer”) to help its athletes navigate new NIL rules. That’s the behind the scenes stuff, the nitty gritty. Everyone, including the athletes want to know how this is going to truly affect them and their sports.

First of all, it’s a fallacy to say that only the USC’s and UCLA’s of the world, schools in major markets, will be able to take advantage of this development in the age of social media. It’s fair to assume most of the endorsement deals will come in the form of sponsored tweets, Instagram posts, Tic Toks, etc.

Off of the social media landscape, Syracuse athletes will be largely pigeon-holed to Central New York. The last household name the Orange had is Carmelo Anthony. Until another star freshman with dreads comes along, the national market is closed to Syracuse athletes. But that’s ok. Think of how much influence SU basketball players like Joe Girard and Buddy Boeheim have in the area. Local endorsement deals for local businesses, especially ones with a preexisting relationship with the University, are destined to call guys like that. The football players are going to run into the same obstacle NFL players do. Because of helmets, they are less likely to connect to the fans on the field, which makes their marketing potential close to none, especially if they continue to perform at a low level.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star Canadian target is ready for top U.S. players (itlh; Adler)

Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Syracuse basketball 2023 target and elite Canadian wing Elijah Fisher hasn’t gotten to play all that much over the past year, he says in a recent blog post for SI All-American.

The 6-foot-7 Fisher has said that he believes he’s the No. 1 overall prospect in his class, whether that be in Canada or in the United States. And he’s ready to prove it on the court.

Fisher noted his participation in a training camp for Canada’s under-19 national team, and how that preparation will help him fare well when his AAU squad goes up against top-flight U.S. players on the Adidas circuit in July.

He wrote, “I know that this training camp will get me ready for that level of competition, so next month I’ll be able to just get out there and kill!”

Fisher, a sophomore at the Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario, suits up in AAU events for Grassroots Elite Canada, which is also based in Toronto.

Syracuse basketball 2023 prospect Elijah Fisher is honing his craft.

Fisher says that he’s added muscle mass and strength, going from 185 pounds to 215 pounds. He has improved the accuracy of his jump shot, “and I’m able to shoot off the dribble easier now too.”

Syracuse Basketball: Duke buzz for 4-star target, other blue-bloods calling (itlh; Adler)


I said not too long ago that an offer from Duke to elite 2022 big man Kyle Filipowski, a high-priority target for Syracuse basketball in this class, could prove concerning.

Well, the 6-foot-10 power forward recently took an official visit to the Blue Devils, and he’s also landed an offer from Duke. Filipowski obtained a relatively new offer from Big Ten Conference juggernaut Michigan as well.

Those two scholarship offers amount to massive competition for the Orange, which had already been facing many high-major suitors for Filipowski, who is a junior at the Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., and suits up for the New York City-based NY Renaissance on the AAU circuit.

Filipowski, a four-star prospect who is potentially headed toward five-star status at some point, made an official visit to the Hill at the beginning of June.

From what I can tell, that trip to Central New York went quite well. And new 2022 commit Justin Taylor, a four-star wing, has said that he is trying to recruit Filipowski to join him in this ‘Cuse class.

With the NCAA’s landmark adoption of a name, image and likeness policy, things are about to change for college athletes. One of the many new options on the table is the ability to hire representation to help them acquire endorsement deals.

In this space, we’ll monitor which ACC men’s basketball players have already signed with an agency of some sort. That starts with Louisville JUCO transfer guard El Ellis.

Biscotti’s supplies the desserts served at Peacock, and the kitchen has taken advantage of the recent wave of charcuterie treatment of darn near everything to put together a dessert lover’s dream: the Dessert Charcuterie Board.

But we started at a more conventional place.

The list of inventive cocktails at Peacock is supplemented by specials. The menu lists a wide variety of cocktails from margaritas that sell for $4 on Mondays, through sangrias, specialty martinis, and flights of martinis and cocktails, with prices ranging up to $24.
