Welcome to National Hot Dog Day!

National Hot Dog Day was started by the North American Meat Institute in 1991 and began being promoted and organized by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council after they were created by the institute in 1994. The day coincides with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., which is also sponsored by the North American Meat Institute. The lunch, which has taken place for decades, is a large hot dog picnic attended by lawmakers, administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff. The goal of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is for similar smaller events to be held around the country. Many national and local retailers have sponsored deals on the day. This holiday also takes place during National Hot Dog Month, which started in the 1950s.

Hot dogs gained in popularity in the United States in the early twentieth century, and are similar to frankfurters and wieners, which take their names from Frankfurt, Germany, and Vienna, Austria. In the United States, hot dogs were traditionally sold at hot dog stands and carts and were prominent in New York City, as well as Chicago. They have become a prominent part of American culture, and have been closely associated with baseball. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile have also become cultural icons.

Watch: Buddy Boeheim appears in cereal ad, part of 1st traditional ad campaign for college athlete in NIL era (PS; $; Carlson)

Buddy Businessman

Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim will appear in commercials and on boxes of Three Wishes cereal, part of what industry experts say is another first of the name, image and likeness era in college sports.

Kristi Dosh, a writer with Business of College Sports declared the Three Wishes campaign to be “the first traditional ad campaign featuring a college athlete during the NIL era.”

It is the latest example of Boeheim being at the forefront as college athletes across the country take advantage of the elimination of many restrictions on how they can benefit financially from playing college sports.

Three Wishes cereal was co-founded by Ian Wishingrad, a 2008 Syracuse University graduate, who was looking to create a cereal that is low in sugar, high in protein and grain-free. The brand recently began being sold in Wegmans.

Buddy Boeheim, the son of head coach Jim Boeheim, liked the idea of pairing with another Syracuse graduate and began shooting the commercial about two weeks ago.

This Is Why Copeland to Syracuse Looks Promising – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Ezeir)

In the successes of the 2022 recruiting class, with Kamari Lands and Justin Taylor, Boeheim and company are still searching for a prototypical guard to run the offense. Joe Girard III is the safe option as he’ll be entering his fourth season, but Syracuse continues to sift through the pool of available recruits. Quadir Copeland is the one player that stands out and supposedly has SU high on his list.

On 247Sports, a crystal ball prediction about Copeland to the Orange was made, the first sign hinting toward the 6-foot-6 point guard’s possible college destination. This doesn’t mean that the Pennsylvania native is a lock to suit up for SU, but this same scenario of crystal ball predictions occurred with Taylor before he chose Syracuse. A good omen to say the least.

Copeland visited SU on June 22 and his reviews were positive. He spoke with Dushawn London of 247Sports about the trip, describing it as a “fun visit and a good experience”. Syracuse is Copeland’s only official visit as of now, as he unofficially visited Maryland and continues to have a strong relationship with UMiami.

These are all positive signs for SU: his only official visit, the selling point of him as the sole point guard, plus, a pair of ESPN top 100 recruits in his class to play alongside.

CJ Fair: Former Syracuse star is playing for Boeheim’s Army and prepping for a future after basketball ends (PS; $; Ditota)

C.J. Fair isn’t sure why he has endured as a Syracuse basketball personality.

Maybe it’s the four years he put in as a forward who could attack the rim, defend and rebound the ball. Maybe it’s because of his unassuming, lunch pail work ethic. Maybe it’s because the teams he played on won so many games. (SU went 112-27 during Fair’s career, and yes, we’re counting the vacated season.)

Whatever it is, Fair appreciates the love. He hears from people who remember his huge dunk against Georgetown. He recalls the controversial block-charge moment at Duke that prompted Jim Boeheim’s jacket removal and the many memes it inspired. His bloodied cheek after a dunk in Maui remains a Fair talking point.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star target, a lights-out shooter, soars in rankings (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2022 four-star prospect Chris Bunch has proven one of the more under-rated players in his class for a while now, but that is about to change.

The 6-foot-7 wing, a junior at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif., has skyrocketed in the national rankings, according to 247Sports, as Bunch’s recruitment continues to heat up.

Bunch recently took an official visit to the Hill, and he has also traveled to Big Ten Conference member Rutgers. He told college basketball insider Adam Zagoria in a recent article that he also hopes to make trips to fellow Atlantic Coast Conference participant Florida State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and USC.

A coveted prospect in the 2022 cycle, Bunch holds more than two-dozen scholarship offers from a range of high-major squads. As we wrote in a recent column, blue-blood group Duke is also showing interest in Bunch.

To date, I haven’t seen any predictions from analysts or other recruiting insiders regarding a potential collegiate destination for Bunch.

It doesn’t appear that Bunch is in a super rush to make a commitment announcement. In a Q&A by Mike McAllister, the publisher of SyracuseOnSI, Bunch said that he plans to trim his list of contenders “by the end of the summer.”

I’m not in Bunch’s inner circle, but based on interviews that I’ve read as well as comments from analysts, the Orange absolutely has a solid chance at landing Bunch.

Upstate NY could see another fiery red sunset, sunrise from wildfire smoke (PS; $; Coin)

The smoke drifting more than 2,000 miles from the Western wildfires will bring another fiery red sunset and sunrise to Upstate New York.

“Tonight’s sunset and Wednesday morning’s sunrise will be quite vivid, with wildfire smoke over nearly two-thirds of the nation,” tweeted Brian Donegan, a Central New York meteorologist who works for the new Fox Weather service.

If it’s not too cloudy, that is. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for most of Upstate New York through 11 p.m., so clouds could obscure the sunset, which is 8:37 p.m. in Syracuse.

The smoke also prompted an air quality alert for all of New York and several other Northeast states. The tiny particles in smoke -- less than 1/30th the width of a human hair -- can penetrate the lungs and cause breathing problems. People with cardiac and respiratory issues are urged to stay indoors.

It’s not unusual for smoke to drift across the continent, but it usually stays several thousand feet above the ground. This time, smoke particles have descended to the surface, leading to the air quality alert.
