Welcome to Baby Boomers Recognition Day!

Baby Boomers Recognition Day is dedicated to baby boomers, the generation that was born between roughly the years of 1946 and 1964. There was an uptick in births during this time, which was spurred by an economic boom and a longing for a return to normalcy after the Great Depression and war. Early baby boomers came of age during the Summer of Love and Woodstock, and grappled with issues such as the Vietnam War during a time of great social change. In general, early baby boomers tended to be more liberal than later baby boomers, although many early baby boomers' politics shifted towards the right in the 1980's. To date, three United States Presidents have been baby boomers: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump. Their varying ideologies demonstrate that the views of baby boomers are not monolithic. Rock & Roll and television were important parts of the lives of young baby boomers, and there was a belief while growing up that they were better off than those who came before them. Baby Boomers Recognition Day takes place on August 16 because that is one of the days that Woodstock took place in 1969. In fact, there are plans for a fifty year Woodstock reunion in 2019, which would be an apropos way to celebrate Baby Boomers Recognition Day.

Syracuse basketball commit Justin Taylor transfers to IMG Academy, joining Quadir Copeland (247sports.com; Bailey)

Two Syracuse basketball commits will get a chance to build some chemistry together before enrolling in college. Justin Taylor, a four-star wing from Virginia, announced on Sunday night that he would transfer to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., joining guard Quadir Copeland. He played previously for St. Anne's-Belfield School in Charlottesville.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Taylor pledged to the Orange in late June two weeks after taking an official visit to Central New York. He's rated the No. 62 overall prospect this cycle by the 247Sports Composite. Taylor is also listed as the No. 17 small forward, though he's expected to join Copeland in the Orange's backcourt unit.

“One thing they stress with me is freedom," Taylor previously said of Syracuse in an interview with our Brian Snow. "There is a lot of freedom for guards in their system. At the one through three spot there are a lot of options.

“... They have also shown me how players like me have succeeded in the past, and that is definitely very appealing. Coach (Gerry) McNamara has talked to me and showed me clips of how they would use me, so I like that a lot.”

Copeland committed to SU on Tuesday, joining Taylor and four-start power forward Kamari Lands in the program's Class of 2022. A 6-foot-6 product of Gettysburg, Pa., he's rated three stars, the No. 24 combo guard and the No. 140 overall prospect this cycle by the 247Sports Composite.

Copeland took his official visit to Syracuse during the week preceding Taylor's pledge.

"It was a fun visit and a good experience being with the coach and everything," Copeland told our Dushawn London after playing in front of SU head coach Jim Boeheim at the Atlantic City Jam Fest in July. "The guys over there were really nice.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star Zion Cruz to reveal, more analyst predictions (itlh; Adler)

It looks like 2022 five-star guard Zion Cruz, who holds a Syracuse basketball offer, is almost ready to make his collegiate destination known.

Per a recent tweet from college basketball insider Adam Zagoria, the 6-foot-5 Cruz plans to announce his college decision on August 19.

Cruz received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff about two years ago. In all honesty, though, there didn’t appear to be much buzz at all between this elite 2022 guard and the ‘Cuse for a long period of time.

That’s a bummer, because last year, I felt that the Orange might have a decent shot at picking up Cruz, who attends The Patrick School in Hillside, N.J., and runs on the AAU circuit with the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals.

In April of 2020, we published a column detailing how Cruz was transferring from Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City, N.J., to the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star commits ready to shine at prep-power IMG (itlh; Adler)

Around the time that 2022 four-star wing Justin Taylor committed to Syracuse basketball at the end of June, he said in an interview that he was helping to recruit 2022 four-star point guard Quadir Copeland to join him in this class.

About a week ago, Copeland gave a verbal commitment to the Orange, choosing the ‘Cuse over other finalists Maryland, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Miami, Penn State, DePaul and La Salle.

While Copeland and Taylor should form a special duo on the Hill, they’ll actually get to suit up together prior to coming on board in Central New York.

As we’ve documented multiple times in the past, the 6-foot-6 Copeland is transferring to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., for his senior year.

On Sunday night, the 6-foot-6 Taylor said on social media that he, too, is headed to the IMG Academy for his senior campaign of high school.

Excited to announce that i will be doing my final year of high school at IMG Academy ! pic.twitter.com/GaBOOc89qf

The biggest winners of the men's college basketball offseason, including Penny Hardaway and John Calipari (theathletic.com; $; O'Neil, Hamilton, +)

It’s the middle of August. Rosters are settled, outside of reclassified star Emoni Bates. Summer workouts have come and gone, in-person recruiting events happened for the first time in more than a year, and in some places fall classes are getting started.

This means the offseason is pretty much over, thankfully. And it’s time for three of our writers to declare their biggest winner of the offseason. On Wednesday: the biggest losers.

Brian Hamilton: State of Texas basketball

How did nearly everything fall our 28th state’s way, college basketball-wise, this offseason? Let us count the ways, perhaps over some loud objections from the College Station area.

Texas needed a new men’s basketball coach. It landed pretty immediately on the best available candidate, Chris Beard, who also happened to be an alum and one of the most successful coaches in the sport, period, over recent years. Texas also landed a future spot in the SEC, and while that irks one of its in-state rivals who likely preferred being the lone Lone Star State representative in that league, it’s lucrative for the Longhorns long-term and allows for the rekindling of a great rivalry on a regular basis. Beard and Co. also closed on top 30 2022 prospect Arterio Morris, who committed to Texas in July after decommitting from Memphis in the winter.

Baylor kicked off the whole thing with a national championship in men’s hoops and then watched one of its stars, Davion Mitchell, come off the board to the Sacramento Kings with the ninth overall selection in the NBA Draft, with Mitchell’s backcourt mate Jared Butler landing in the top 40 picks. Scott Drew subsequently reaffirmed his program’s locomotive-like forward momentum by securing a commitment from Keyonte George, the five-star guard ranked as the No. 1 prospect in Texas and a top 5 recruit in the Class of 2022. Nobody figured the Bears to be any sort of a flash in the pan by now, given the extended string of success culminating in that national title. But the George pledge was an emphatic retort to anyone who might still be skeptical.

Dave Matthews Band issues Covid restrictions for most concerts -- but not St. Joe’s Amp (PS; $; Herbert)

Dave Matthews Band has issued new Covid-19 restrictions for most of its upcoming tour dates.

DMB announced Friday night that, for all shows starting Aug. 21, all ticketholders must provide proof of full vaccination or a negative Covid test taken within 48 hours prior to entry. Children under the age of 12 may attend if they provide proof of a negative Covid test taken within 48 hours of the show.

“We encourage all fans to wear a mask, especially when social distancing is not possible,” the band said in a statement.

The new rules will apply to Dave Matthews Band concerts scheduled at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs on Sept. 17-18, but not for DMB’s performance on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse. The Foo Fighters are currently the only artist requiring proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test at St. Joe’s Amp, but the venue is also requiring masks be worn indoors (including restrooms) for all concerts, regardless of vaccination status.

Live Nation said Friday it would require all artists and fans to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or show a negative test at its venues and festivals starting Oct. 4. It’s not immediately clear if it that will apply to the St. Joe’s Amp, which is owned by Onondaga County. syracuse.com has reached out to Live Nation for further details.

“Vaccines are going to be your ticket back to shows, and as of October 4th we will be following the model we developed for Lollapalooza and requiring this for artists, fans and employees at Live Nation venues and festivals everywhere possible in the US,” Live Nation president and CEO Michael Rapino told NBC.
