Welcome to World Afro Day!

World Afro Day is a global day of change that educates about and celebrates Afro hair, culture, and identity. Founder Michelle de Leon has stated that the vision for the day is "to create a platform to celebrate and educate people about Afro hair," and that "through annual events and a worldwide educational network, we will unite people globally in raising Afro hair to world class status through positive awareness and academic excellence." Historically, there has been bias against Afro hair in society, which has increased exclusion and feelings of inferiority and caused lasting effects on health and economic opportunity. Conversely, straight hair has been associated with success and beauty. As Afro hair is not regularly celebrated, especially on a global scale, the aim of World Afro Day is to change this.

After hearing her daughter sing about her natural hair, de Leon decided to start the day, because she wanted all children of African descent to feel positively about their hair like her daughter did. Once the mission of the day was established, a date had to be chosen. On September 15, 2016, a federal court ruled on a case in Alabama, deciding that companies could deny people employment if they had dreadlocks. Essentially, it ruled against Afro hair. De Leon, who is from London, England, decided that the first World Afro Day should be held on September 15, 2017, "to mark this dreadful law." During that first year, the day was endorsed by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, it hosted a World Hair Education Lesson with 400 children and teachers taking part, and notables such as Miss USA 2016 Deshauna Barber and celebrity hairstylist Vernon François took part.

Symposium for high school athletes will feature Boeheims, Eric Devendorf, Ryan Blackwell, more (PS; Waters)

In the NCAA’s new era of Name, Image and Likeness, Syracuse basketball players Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim are going to earn money this Sunday talking to prospective college athletes about Name, Image and Likeness.

The irony in that is not lost on Alec Kinsky, founder of The Circuit, which will host a panel discussion featuring the Boeheim brothers along with former player Eric Devendorf, former Syracuse player and current boys basketball coach at Liverpool High School Ryan Blackwell, Albany City Rocks AAU program director Jim Hart and former SU women’s basketball star Erica Morrow.

“It’s 100 percent an NIL thing,’’ Kinsky said of the event. “They’re very excited about it. It’s an important topic to talk about and I’m sure they’re going to have a lot of advice for the high school athletes in attendance.’’

The symposium will be held at the Crouse Hinds Theater on Sunday. The event starts at 5 p.m. with an autograph session followed by a panel discussion from 6 to 8 p.m.

This is the inaugural event in The Circuit’s Symposium Series, which is designed to counsel prospective college athletes on topics such as NIL, mental health, social media and how to get recruited.

Kinsky has a background is in grassroots basketball. He has seen kids and their parents make costly mistakes during the recruiting process.

Six things Carmelo Anthony said about Syracuse in new book, ‘Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised’ (PS; Ditota)

Carmelo Anthony, forever lionized in Syracuse sports history for leading the Orange to its first and only national basketball title in 2003, has written the book “Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised” that details his upbringing from Brooklyn to Baltimore to Syracuse, where this story ends with a championship and his selection in the NBA Draft.

Anthony provides details about his dad, Carmelo Iriarte, a native of Puerto Rico who moved to the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, worked in the post office across the street from Madison Square Garden and died of cancer when Anthony was 2 years old. He tells of his immense love for his mom, Mary Anthony, a basketball player born in South Carolina and transplanted to New York at age 18 who worked various jobs to support her family. He touches on his beloved sister, Michelle, the “Mary J. Blige of Red Hook,” and his older brothers, Wolf and Justice.

Syracuse Basketball: Brewster target attains 5 stars, vaults into top 10 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2023 target Matas Buzelis is the latest prospect to have received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff, and then have his national rankings skyrocket.

I’m in no way saying these two developments are related, but credit the ‘Cuse coaches for identifying talented high-school prospects early on in their recruiting processes. This has occurred more than once of late, for 2023 players and prospects in other recruiting cycles as well.

In the case of the 6-foot-10 Buzelis, who can suit up at both guard positions and on the wing, he has jumped into the top-10 overall across the country within his class, according to one of the primary recruiting services.

As we’ve detailed in several recent columns on Buzelis, he also continues to see his list of high-major scholarship offers grow. Some national analysts and recruiting insiders say that Buzelis is one of the fastest-rising prospects in the entire 2023 class.

Syracuse Basketball: 6-foot-8 guard, recently offered, bolts into rankings (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has proven quite active with new scholarship offers doled out to, and interest shown in, a wide variety of high-school prospects within the 2023 class.

One of those recent offers, which came in mid-August, went to fast-rising Spencer Mahoney, a talented and under-rated player from New York City whose recruitment has arrived on a national stage.

The 6-foot-8 shooting guard has entered the national rankings for the 2023 cycle, according to at least one recruiting service, and his list of offers is growing.

I’m excited that the Orange coaching staff has gotten involved with Mahoney relatively early on in his recruiting process, although competition for his services is absolutely going to keep on intensifying.

In the upcoming campaign, Mahoney will be a junior at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and he runs on the AAU circuit with the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals, which is one of the premier programs in grassroots basketball.

Let’s see where Syracuse basketball 2023 target Spencer Mahoney is ranked.

recently updated its national ratings of the top-150 prospects in the 2023 class. Mahoney is new to these rankings, coming in as three stars and No. 122 overall.

Canine Carnival

Over the previous ten years the Canine Carnival, started by local meteorologist Wayne Mahar as a tribute to his mom, has raised nearly a quarter of a million of dollars for CNY animal rescues. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Jamesville Beach Park. Bring your best four-legged friend for a fun day out with entertainment and vendors.
