Welcome to International Day of Peace!
International Day of Peace—established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 and first observed in 1982—is "devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples." It was originally held on the third Tuesday of September, which is the opening day of the regular session of the General Assembly. In 2001, a resolution adopted by the General Assembly designated the International Day of Peace to be a "day of global ceasefire and non-violence." It also changed the date of the holiday to September 21.
The holiday has a different theme each year and is marked with education and the raising of public awareness on issues related to peace. The Secretary-General of the United Nations rings the United Nations Peace Bell, which is located in the Peace Garden at the United Nations Headquarters, and a minute of silence is observed. This moment is observed globally at 12:00 noon. The day can be celebrated individually or as part of a group and can be observed by attending various events or programs. It is often marked with intercultural and interfaith dialogues, workshops based on the UN Peace Day theme, vigils, marches, parades, and flag ceremonies.

Orange Watch: 2021-22 Syracuse basketball schedule as challenging as ever - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
As we wrote in late June, with the bracket that’s subsequently been announced and the eventual game results in November’s Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament in the Bahamas, Syracuse could end up facing seven of the last eight programs to win the national championship among the 31 games of the upcoming season’s schedule.
The Orange meet Virginia Commonwealth in the first game at the Atlantis resort, and face either Baylor or Arizona State in game two contingent if they win or lose vs. VCU. Depending on the game two result, SU could potentially dual Connecticut in its third and final game.
If Syracuse does end up meeting Baylor (good shot) and Connecticut (longer shot), they would indeed meet seven of the last eight national champion schools with Virginia, Villanova, North Carolina, Duke, and Louisville already on the schedule.
Hypothetically, SU could have a six-game stretch in November-early December of playing Baylor, Michigan State (or Connecticut/Auburn/Loyola-Chicago), Indiana, Florida State, Villanova, and Georgetown in consecutive games. That has to be the toughest early-season stretch since the last time the ‘Cuse played at the Atlantis early in the 2015-16 season when it met Connecticut, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, and Georgetown in four straight games.
All but one ACC team, Duke, plays its first league game over the weekend of December 3-5, when the Orange travel to Florida State, providing plenty of fodder for conspiracy theorists.
We, or course, didn’t know it that the time, but Roy Williams ended up making his final Dome appearance as North Carolina coach last March 1 when Syracuse held on for a 72-70 win, before he announced his retirement exactly one month later.
We do know that Mike Krzyzewski will bid the building farewell on (Saturday) February 26 in what will hopefully be a prime-time affair. Two days later, Syracuse travels to North Carolina for its only Big Monday appearance of the season, trying to win for the first time ever against the Tar Heels at the Smith Center (0-5), where the Orange are 1-6 all-time (North Carolina A&T 1988 NCAA Tournament) in the building.

Demetris Nichols is the new graduate assistant coach for Syracuse Men's Basketball
Demetris Nichols returning to Syracuse Basketball (cnycentral.com)
Watching Demetris Nichols play at Syracuse from 2003-2006 was an absolute treat for Orange fans everywhere.
A guy that could score at all levels and was all business on the court. It's that skill set that led to a lengthy professional career overseas.
Now, D is coming back to the Dome.
Nichols is the new graduate assistant coach for Jim Boeheim and Syracuse Men's Basketball. Demetris had been in town for the last couple years working on many things including commentary for basketball broadcasts.
In fact, a sportscast in which Nichols was live in our studio on March 11, 2020 is being honored by the Syracuse Press Club.
Now Nichols, 36, is jump-starting a coaching career by lending his expertise to a talented Orange team that appears poised to return to the NCAA Tournament in 2022.
Nichols scored 1,344 points in his Orange career, leading the team in scoring his senior season in 2007.
He's worn Orange a little bit since then starring for a couple different editions of Boeheim's Army in "The Basketball Tournament"
Buddy Boeheim: Apple Farmer - Beak and Skiff (beakandskiff.com)
Syracuse basketball guard Buddy Boeheim posted a video on his Instagram page on Friday. That is not normally a noteworthy event. However, this video is a commercial for Beek and Skiff Apple Orchards, where he pretends to be pursuing his dream of being an apple farmer. And it does not go well. You can watch the video below.

According to a press release, the fest will feature food trucks, beer, wine, a massive laser show, a trampoline artist from Cirque du Soleil, a pool art display from Burning Man, and experienced crew members from the Ultra Fest in Miami. Aspiring musicians can also record a demo at Lomo booths on site for a chance to be reviewed by music executives at Lomo Records.
