On this day in 1963, the British science-fiction television show Doctor Who first premiered. It quickly became an institution in the United Kingdom, and later gained a large fan base in the United States, where it was in syndication from the 1970's through the 1990's, and became a staple on PBS stations. In its original run, new episodes were created until 1989, and new episodes have once again been created since 2005, which continued the plot where it had left off. The show follows the adventures of "the Doctor," who is not a human, but an ancient extraterrestrial being called a Time Lord. His travels through space and time take place by using TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), a spaceship shaped like a blue British police box. As the Doctor travels to help people and civilizations in need, he is accompanied by companions, and takes on many foes, with his intellect and a minimal amount of resources. As of 2017 there had been twelve doctors, and the thirteenth doctor had been chosen, the first time a woman would play the role. Time Lords can regenerate into new incarnations, which has made it easy to write transitions to new doctors into the plot of the show. Doctor Who was originally intended for a family audience, and the use of time travel was intended to explore scientific ideas and famous events in history. Over time the science fiction stories came to dominate. There have been many spin-offs of the show in various mediums since its inception.

Kouwe confident in Syracuse basketball despite Colgate loss - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)
With Syracuse coming off a frustrating loss to Colgate, we chatted with former Syracuse guard Andrew Kouwe on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by SNY.tv, to make sense of the loss.
“You have to give Colgate a lot of credit,” Kouwe said. “They had the perfect personnel to dismantle the zone.”
Colgate connected on 18 3-pointers in defeating the Orange for the first time since the 1960s, a streak that spanned 54 games.
But despite the early loss, Kouwe is not overly concerned.
“I’m not as down as one would think losing to Colgate thinking, ‘Oh, how can we beat a North Carolina or Duke, we just lost to Colgate?” Kouwe said. “This is a unique situation.”
Two things to look for as the season progresses will be from two of Syracuse’s newest wings, Cole Swider and Benny Williams, Kouwe said. Both have struggled in the first three games, with Swider shooting only 20 percent from beyond the arc, and Williams posting a -26 in his +/- rating against Colgate.
Kouwe expects the two to improve significantly throughout the season, which will solidify the Orange’s NCAA Tournament status. The balance will be key to getting a berth.
“It’s a team we’re not used to seeing,” Kouwe said. “This is a really high IQ team from top to bottom and is not going to have a lot of turnovers. It’s a very methodical team that’s good everywhere.”
“You’re going to see them wear down a lot of teams. There’s no one in the starting 5 that is a top 10 NBA player. You’re not going to get Sherman Douglas to Stevie Thompson type of high-flying fast break teams that Syracuse fans are used to.”
It’s an early sample size, but Kouwe likes what he sees so far, even with the Colgate loss.
“To me, they look like an NCAA team,” Kouwe said. “This team has the potential to beat any team.”
Afterward, editor in chief Brad Bierman calls in to discuss Syracuse’s loss to NC State and to preview the regular season finale against Pitt.
Syracuse basketball defense needs work, but next foe abysmal on offense (itlh; Adler)
Okay, so Syracuse basketball fell over the weekend on the Hill to New York state neighbor Colgate for the first time in decades. It happens. It does sting, though.
It’s a bad loss for sure, but not because the Raiders aren’t any good, because they’re actually really, really good. Rather, what is concerning for the Orange (2-1) is that its 2-3 zone defense, often lethal in years past, was totally exposed by the crisp passing and excellent shooting of Colgate players.
And the ‘Cuse rebounding efforts also left a lot to be desired. Coming into the 2021-22 campaign, the scouting report on Syracuse basketball seemed to be that the team was going to score a lot of points, but its defense, rebounding and athleticism were question marks.
Alas, while falling to Colgate by 15 points at home, after having a 15-point lead in the first half, is frustrating and concerning, let’s all take a deep breath. There is still a ton of hoops to get played in 2021-22.
Let’s take a closer look at VCU, the next opponent for Syracuse basketball.
This Wednesday in the early evening, the Orange will battle VCU out of the Atlantic 10 Conference in the first game for the ‘Cuse in the 2021 Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis.Even though some Syracuse basketball fans have already predicted the Orange to the NIT, I’m not in that camp. In fact, I think that the ‘Cuse is going to beat VCU (2-2), which most recently lost at home to Chattanooga by two points.
In the 2021-22 stanza, the Rams have defeated Saint Peter’s and Vanderbilt, and they’ve been beaten by the aforementioned Chattanooga and Wagner.
Plus, while the Syracuse basketball defense isn’t playing super great, one could argue that VCU is having an even bigger challenge in putting points on the scoreboard.
According to ESPN’s Web site, the Rams are averaging a paltry 50.8 points per game, while connecting on 40.4 percent from the field, 61.5 percent from the charity stripe and a sub-par 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. They’re also committing a whopping 17.5 turnovers a game.
Colgate hit on better than 40 percent from deep versus the Orange, and the Raiders made 18 baskets from 3-point land. Unless something weird transpires, I can’t foresee VCU registering similar numbers against the Syracuse basketball 2-3 zone.
Some of my fellow ‘Cuse hoops fans are adamant that the Orange’s rough loss to Colgate means that Syracuse basketball will automatically go 0-3 at the 2021 Battle 4 Atlantis.
Personally, I feel that the ‘Cuse will conquer VCU. After that, who knows.

ACC Roundup - Notre Dame Falls In The Maui Classic (DBR; King)
No major surprises in ACC Action Monday night unless you count Notre Dame losing to St. Mary’s in the Maui Classic (in Vegas this year due to Covid) but St. Mary’s is always tough so we’re not sure we’d call that a surprise.
It was a late game so we don’t know much yet but the Irish got nothing out of Nate Laszewski other than a decent rebounding night with seven.
Notre Dame handled the ball well with just eight turnovers but didn’t shoot well with just 38.9 percent overall.
With the win over Charleston Southern, Georgia Tech moves to 4-1. The Yellow Jackets haven’t played a killer schedule but all their wins are by double digits and both Michael Devoe and Jim Usher have had big nights.
Thing is, they did it this time without Devoe, who missed the game with a non-Covid issue.
Tech gets Georgia Southern next and then things get real: Wisconsin, UNC, LSU and USC before Christmas.
One of the teams Georgia Tech beat was Georgia, by ten, and Virginia played them Monday night.
The Cavs won too but it wasn’t easy. However, it was more typically Virginia than things have been so far this season with the game being tight at the end and Virginia doing the right things to win.
Virginia also had just four turnovers, just one more than Duke had against the Citadel and limited the Bulldogs to seven points over the last 7:18.
Like Virginia, FSU has also been erratic but the ‘Noles just ripped Missouri apart, 81-58. Missouri had 17 turnovers and shot just 38.2 percent. Mizzou should be a great basketball school but it’s been a while since that’s happened.

A look inside a typical DGX store, which is opening in downtown Syracuse.
New type of Dollar Store opening 2nd New York state location; this one in downtown Syracuse (PS; $; Doran)
A new store concept from Dollar General is opening Tuesday in the former Rite Aid drugstore in downtown Syracuse.
DGX, a division of Dollar General, is opening in the former Woolworth’s building at 301 S. Salina St. at the southeast corner of South Salina and East Fayette streets. The store will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
The store was originally scheduled to open Monday, but there was a delay and it will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dollar General officials said.
DGX is a new chain of stores geared toward millennial shoppers in downtown areas. Dollar General opened the first DGX in 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee. Its first store in New York state opened in Rochester in November 2020. This is the second location.
The store offers fresh fruits and vegetables, an expanded health and beauty section, frozen and refrigerated foods, pet supplies, snacks, candy, paper products and home cleaning supplies. It also offers some grab-and-go items.
“We are excited to bring our DGX format to the Syracuse community to help support the needs of customers in the city’s vibrant downtown community,” said Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and development.
There are 26 DGX stores operating in the United States.
