Today celebrates the popular chocolate dessert, the brownie. Brownies can vary in their texture; they may have a similar consistency to cake, fudge, or cookies. Although they are often plain, they many times include ingredients such as nuts, frosting, or powdered sugar. They almost always are chocolate, but variations exist such as the blonde brownie, which substitutes the chocolate for brown sugar, and butterscotch brownies, popular in the South, which also contain no chocolate, and are topped with butterscotch meringue.
Brownies were created in the late 19th century, and were popularized at the beginning of the 20th. There is some debate as to their provenance. One story claims that Bertha Palmer, wife of the owner of the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, asked a pastry chef to create a dessert for women to eat at the World's Columbian Exposition. The chef created the Palmer House Brownie, a brownie with walnuts and apricot glaze, that is still sold at the hotel today. Another story claims a housewife in Bangor, Maine, created the brownie. Brownies began appearing in their current form in various cookbooks during the first decade of the 20th century.

Villanova bottled up Boeheim, and SU couldn’t make the Wildcats pay (PS; $; Waters)
Buddy Boeheim made his first two shots in Syracuse’s game against Villanova on Tuesday night here at Madison Square Garden.
But the shots were of the type that Villanova wanted Syracuse’s high-scoring guard to take.
The first came off a move into the lane. The second on a runner off the backboard.
Both came against a primary defender with no help coming from a teammate.
The shots were tough, contested and they weren’t spot-up jumpers.
Villanova’s ability to contain Boeheim with just one defender was the key to the Wildcats’ 67-53 victory over Syracuse in the Jimmy V Classic.
Boeheim, who entered the game averaging 19.1 points per game, scored a season-low six points. He made just three of his 15 field-goal attempts, meaning he went 1-for-13 in the game’s final 33 minutes. He missed on all five of his 3-point attempts.
“They’re good,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said of Villanova’s defense. “Really physical. He’s got to get it off the dribble. He’s not getting any good spot-up looks.”

Quick Hits: Syracuse pays for failure to rebound - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)
Syracuse was downed by Villanova, 67-53, in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. Here are some quick hits from the game:
- This game looked like an exceptionally bad matchup for the Orange defense on paper. Villanova entered the game shooting 42.2 percent from three-point range with 47.4 percent of their field goals coming from long range.
- Prior to meeting the Wildcats, the average SU opponent attempted 49.6 percent of their shots form beyond the arc, making 34.9 percent, a number driven down by Florida State’s icy perimeter shooting in Syracuse’s last game. 28 of Villanova’s 37 first half shots were threes and they finished the game with a program record 50 three-point attempts among their 77 shots.
- All those three-point attempts made for a lot of offensive rebounds for the Wildcats. Villanova grabbed over half their misses, collecting 27 offensive boards compared to SU’s 25 defensive rebounds. The ‘Cats turned those opportunities into 25 second chance points and held an overall 57-36 rebounding margin.
- Jimmy Boeheim and Joe Girard III were most of the Orange offense in the first half. They combined for 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including connecting on all three of their combined attempts from deep.
- Jesse Edwards and Frank Anselem have quickly become very good at closing out on shooters in the corners. It is a rarely spoken about, but very important, part of the SU defense getting better in a hurry. Unfortunately, the Wildcats took advantage late, sending multiple players to the offensive glass to get easy offensive boards.
- In the first 13 games last season, Buddy Boeheim shot 71-for-193 (36.8 percent) overall and 28-for-95 (20.5 percent) from three. Through nine contests this year, he’s 53-for-140 (37.9 percent) and 16-for-62 (25.8 percent), respectively.
- Cole Swider continues to struggle shooting the ball, as well. Through nine games, Swider is hitting 38.1 percent overall and 28.8 percent from deep.
- Jesse Edwards finished 8-for-15 at the free throw line. No other Syracuse player attempted a foul shot.
Villanova’s numerous offensive rebounds doomed SU basketball in quest for big upset (PS; $; Ditota)
Villanova does not have a starter who stands taller than 6-foot-8.
But what those Wildcat bodies did possess Tuesday night was a will, a toughness and a determination on the backboards.
Villanova outrebounded Syracuse 57-36 en route to a 67-53 win over the Orange here in the second game of the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
The rebounding advantage was particularly striking on the offensive glass, where the Wildcats kept shrugging off missed 3-point shots by actively pursuing them and converting them to subsequent baskets. Villanova outscored Syracuse 25-7 in second-chance points.
On a night when Syracuse applied better defensive pressure than it has most of this season, on a night when one of the nation’s best shooting teams managed just 13-of-50 from the 3-point line, those second-chance opportunities were the difference in the game.
“I thought in the first half it kept us in the game. We couldn’t make a shot and really struggled with their zone,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “And then in the second half, it would have stayed close like it was the whole first half. That gave us some extra possessions and we got some 3s. Offensive rebounds were really important.”
It’s hard to overstate how important they were.
Syracuse had clawed back to within 55-51 with six minutes left in the game. And then, disaster in the form of two-straight Villanova offensive rebounds struck.
Jermaine Samuels was the Wildcats’ culprit. His two-straight offensive boards and put backs off missed Villanova jump shots suddenly turned a close game into a comfortable Villanova advantage.

The Sun’s Arizin: Villanova can Win with Defense (vuhoops.com; Reilly)
Happy Wednesday Nova Nation! Villanova put together their seventh win of the season last night in a classic “Tale of Two Halves” type of game against the Syracuse Orange.
Villanova had a tough time hitting open threes in the first twenty minutes, as can be the case when you live and die by the three. These weren’t bad shots, it’s what the Syracuse zone is designed to give up. But despite not being able to hit shots after an initial flurry by both teams, Villanova stayed true to its defense, keeping it a one score game into halftime.
Then in the second half, Villanova started getting better zone penetration, shots started falling, and we were treated to this lovely sequence:
There’s not much not to love about this. A great steal by Collin Gillespie, a strong finish at the rim by Jermaine Samuels, and Justin Moore right there with them to make sure they finished the play. What I love most about this wasn’t the execution, the dunk, or even just that this seemed to be the moment the game was officially put out of reach for Syracuse. The best thing about this play was that turning defense into offense is what hyped those three players up more than anything else they did all game. The steal...

‘Orange ran out of gas’: What they’re saying about Syracuse’s loss to No. 6 Villanova (PS; Curtis)
Syracuse left Madison Square Garden with its fourth loss of the season on Tuesday, dropping a 67-53 decision to No. 6 Villanova in the 2021 Jimmy V Classic.
Despite shooting 13-of-50 from the 3-point line, Villanova overpowered Syracuse (5-4, 1-0 ACC) in the rebounding battle, 57-36.
Jimmy Boeheim led Syracuse with 21 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field, while Buddy Boeheim was limited to just six points on 3-of-15, including an 0-for-5 mark from beyond the arc.
It was SU’s second loss of the season when wearing its white throwback jerseys.
Here’s a look at what media, players and fans are saying on social media after the Orange’s loss to Villanova:
Someone needs to look up the official stat, but this needs to be thrown into the cosmos for consideration. The Syracuse script uniforms look good, but SU simply does not win when they wear them.
— Brent Axe (@BrentAxeMedia) December 8, 2021
...And it’s yet another damn loss in those gorgeous cursive uniforms. Such a terrible injustice.
I’m assuming the orange one will be out Saturday...

Wildcats Board: SU basketball loses to Villanova (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)
As it turns out, Villanova does do windows.
The Wildcats cleaned up on the glass in the second half to ensure a 67-53 victory over Syracuse at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic.
Syracuse’s script uniforms reminded of the good ole’ days when the Orange and Wildcats weren’t such strangers, but SU couldn’t stay as sharp as it looked as Villanova used a 12-to-2 run in the second half to pull away and secure victory.
Syracuse fell to 5-4 on the season and were reminded that the Big Apple isn’t quite the home away from home it used to be.
Syracuse has a record of 4-10 in New York City since joining the ACC in 2013.
SU fans will be checking their watches a lot this week as another Big East reunion awaits with Patrick Ewing and Georgetown on Saturday.

Board Room
By the time Tuesday’s game had stretched into early Wednesday morning, the Wildcats looked like King Kong swatting every plane in sight as it hung off the Empire State Building.
The Wildcats outrebounded the Orange 57-36. Where Villanova really did its damage was on the offensive glass, grabbing 27 to Syracuse’s 11. That led to a 25-7 gap in second-chance points for the Wildcats.
Villanova’s 3-point shots came fast and furious all night. The Wildcats made 13 of their 50(!) long-distance attempts, which was effective on its own, but where it really hurt were the 3-point shots that came after Villanova’s bevy of offensive rebounds.

Syracuse basketball 4-star wing target has interest from big-time teams (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2023 four-star recruiting target Gavin Griffiths already has a strong list of suitors, and that list is reportedly growing.
According to multiple reports, the 6-foot-7 wing is garnering interest from a handful of college squads, including a blue-blood program and a second recruiting heavyweight.
That’s on top of the scholarship offers that the top-65 Griffiths had previously landed from a range of high-major groups, including the Orange, which offered him more than a year ago.
Griffiths is one of the fastest risers on a national scale in the junior class. He performed at a high level in AAU competitions over the summer for the Boston-based Expressions Elite Basketball.
And in leading his prep-school team, the Kingswood Oxford School out of West Hartford, Conn., to a recent victory, Griffiths tallied a stellar 33 points.
