Welcome to Cathode-Ray Tube Day!
The cathode-ray tube, originally known as the kinescope, was patented on today's date in 1938 by Vladimir Zworykin, a Russian immigrant. Cathode-Ray Tube Day commemorates this event. A cathode-ray tube is a vacuum tube made from a large glass envelope that has one or more electron guns and a phosphorescent screen that's used to display images. The images are created when electron beams are modulated, accelerated, and deflected onto a screen. The images may represent pictures on computer monitors and television sets, electrical waveforms on oscilloscopes, radar targets, and more.
Cathodes are negatively charged electrodes. Cathode rays were discovered in 1869 in early Crookes tubes. The earliest prototype of the cathode-ray tube was invented by German physicist Ferdinand Braun in 1897 and is known as the Braun tube. The first televisions to use the cathode-ray tube were made in the 1920s. In 1925, a television was made that received images with a 40-line resolution; by 1927, the lines had increased to 100. The first commercially available television sets with cathode-ray tubes were manufactured in Germany in 1934. RCA received a trademark for the term cathode-ray tube in 1932, and it was released to the public domain in 1950. By the late 2000s, cathode-ray tubes had largely been replaced by "flat panel" display technologies like LCD, OLED display, and plasma display. But for the great significance they played in the twentieth century, we celebrate them today with Cathode-Ray Tube Day.

Future Syracuse basketball teammates Justin Taylor, Quadir Copeland become fast friends at IMG (PS; $; Ditota)
They made a deal last summer.
Justin Taylor, a Class of 2022 shooting guard, had already committed to play basketball at Syracuse. But Orange coaches were still pursuing point guard Quadir Copeland, who had just committed to spending a final post-grad year in Bradenton, Florida, playing for IMG Academy.
Taylor was contemplating leaving his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, to play at a place that might offer more competition and a safer environment as Covid-19 continued to plague the planet.
The dialogue between the two went something like this:
Copeland to Taylor: “If you commit to IMG, I’ll commit to Syracuse.”

Axe: Are Syracuse sports teams ready for another round with Covid-19? (PS; $; Axe)
A familiar and dreaded opponent appears on the schedule of every Syracuse sports team this winter.
The question is if they are ready for the rematch.
No one invited COVID-19 and new teammates delta and omicron back to the party, but it’s making a comeback and has already claimed a couple wins here in Syracuse.
The Syracuse University men’s basketball team had to postpone games against Lehigh and Cornell due to Covid issues within the Orange program. Sources told syracuse.com that several Syracuse players tested positive for the coronavirus in recent days.
The Syracuse Crunch have had several games postponed this season due to Covid issues with opponents. Those issues finally infiltrated the Crunch dressing room, causing the latest postponement against Laval on Saturday.
High school sports in CNY play on with masks dangling from chins and many rabbit’s foots being rubbed by local athletic directors.
With cases spiking again in Central New York and around the country, the question abounds on how the games will go on.
The immediate answer at Syracuse University was to take all the fun away.

Syracuse Signee Maliq Brown Named Mercer Invitational Tournament MOP (SI; McAllister)
The current Syracuse basketball players may not have played this weekend, but one future Orange player did. Blue Ridge High School, featuring class of 2022 power forward and Syracuse signee Maliq Brown, participated in the Mercer Invitational Tournament over the weekend. The tournament featured three games in three days for each team. Winners advance culminating with the championship game on Sunday.
Not only did Blue Ridge win the tournament with a 55-51 victory over The Hill School, but Maliq Brown was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Brown put up big numbers all tournament long, and even had an offensive rebound that set up the game winning three pointer with his team trailing by one in the final 30 seconds.
Here is a summary of Brown's performances.
Friday, December 17th vs Episcopal Academy: W 73-41. 14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks.
Saturday, December 18th vs The Peddie School: W 83-69. 27 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals.
Sunday, December 19th vs The Hill School: W 55-51, 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals, 2 assists.
Average: 17 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 2 assists.
Brown committed to Syracuse back in October following an official visit and signed a month later. The 6-9, 210 pound forward picked the Orange over finalists Georgetown, Penn State, NC State and Virginia Tech. He also held offers from St. John's, TCU, Texas A&M, VCU and Wake Forest, among others.
"I chose Syracuse because the school, the campus, everything when I first visited there felt like they were welcoming me," Brown said at the time of his commitment. "I built a good relationship with the coaches, the players and the players in my recruiting class that's going to Syracuse."

Could Extra Time Off Help SU Hoops Recharge? – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)
It’s now been over a full week since Syracuse men’s basketball took the floor. It wasn’t supposed to be this way, but COVID issues with Lehigh and Cornell just pushed back games the Orange were supposed to play on December 18th and 21st. It’s an unfortunate consequence of something larger that hopefully doesn’t throw off the season any further.
Depending on who you ask, a prolonged break between games can do one of two things. Either it can cool off a hot team and cause some rust, or it can be a relief for a struggling squad that needed a breather to sort out some wrinkles. Syracuse doesn’t exactly fit into either of those categories, but you can make a good argument that this pause in play may actually be a good thing for SU.
Sound crazy? Not exactly. You might be restless at home waiting for the Orange to get back onto your TV screen, but you can be sure this break is doing the players some good. If nothing else, it’s giving some of them a break from playing a metric ton of minutes.
Jim Boeheim is famous for neglecting to use his bench, and this season has been no different. The December 11th Georgetown game seems like a long time ago, but recall that SU blew a 10-point halftime lead and brought in just one bench player in the last 20 minutes – center Frank Anselem – for three minutes as the second half slipped away. The game before that saw SU total zero bench points against Villanova. Must be the script jerseys.
A simple look at the ACC’s minutes leaders backs up the image of an exhausted SU squad. Of the 70 or so regular starters in a 15-team ACC, four of the top 26 in minutes played are SU players, and a closer look makes that stat a little more meaningful. Thanks to yesterday’s cancellation, all four of those players (Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim, Joe Girard, and Cole Swider) have all played just 10 games. Every other player in the top 26 has played either 11 or 12 games, but the Orange are still hanging around in the leaders for minutes played among the entire conference. Buddy Boeheim is still fifth in the entire ACC for time on the floor.

Syracuse basketball 5-star target, No. 1 junior, stellar in win vs. ranked foe (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball recruiting target D.J. Wagner, a 2023 five-star point guard, showed why he’s the consensus No. 1 junior across the country.
The 6-foot-3 Wagner led his high school to a hard-fought, tight victory over another elite squad in a match-up of nationally ranked groups, with this contest getting aired on ESPNU.
According to media reports, Wagner tallied 25 points as Camden High School in Camden, N.J., escaped Roselle Catholic High School in Roselle, N.J., by a final count of 67-64.
Per MaxPreps national basketball editor Jordan Divens, Wagner connected on 11-of-25 from the field and hit multiple huge shots down the stretch of this thrilling game.
Camden High School, ranked No. 2 in Divens’ latest national top-25 poll, ran its success streak to 39 encounters in outlasting Roselle Catholic High School, which is rated No. 12. This was the 2021-22 stanza opener for both units.
Syracuse basketball five-star target D.J. Wagner shined in his season debut.
According to Divens, 2023 five-star combo guard Simeon Wilcher led Roselle Catholic High School with a team-high 21 points. Orange coaches offered a scholarship to Wilcher in mid-July.
Wilcher, like Wagner one of the best all-around prospects in the 2023 cycle, said in some media reports that he had high interest in Syracuse basketball, but he ultimately committed to fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina.
The battle between Camden High School and Roselle Catholic High School was one of numerous high-level games scheduled to air on ESPN networks as part of a showcase of contests in 2021-22.
Syracuse basketball coaches offered Wagner this past August at the Orange’s Elite Camp. He has several other big-time offers, including from Kentucky, Memphis and Villanova.
Wagner was stellar as a sophomore, and ahead of his junior team, he got named to the MaxPreps pre-season All-America first team. Wagner certainly kicked off his 2021-22 stanza in an impressive way.

Syracuse Basketball: Not looking good for ‘Cuse with 5-star big man target (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball was the first college team to offer a scholarship to 2023 five-star power forward G.G. Jackson, but I don’t get the sense that the Orange will be prevailing in the recruiting battle for this elite top-10 player.
I’m not a recruiting analyst, nor am I in Jackson’s inner circle. But based on some of his recent comments in an interview, it seems that the 6-foot-8 Jackson is focused on a handful of other teams besides the ‘Cuse.
If that’s the case, that’s a bummer. I’ve been high on Jackson ever since the Orange offered him in August of 2020. The challenge for Syracuse basketball is that Jackson’s recruitment has completely blown up, while his national ratings have soared.
It was always going to prove an uphill climb for the ‘Cuse to pick up Jackson, and some of his more recent offers perhaps just crushed any hope that the Orange could potentially prevail here.
Syracuse basketball offered five-star G.G. Jackson, but which teams is he high on?

From Duke Basketball Report: Too Bad There’s Not A Mediocrity Bowl. The ACC Might Get Two Teams.
State of ACC Hoops 2021-12-19 (RX; HM)
According to All Sports Discussion, the ACC is probably only going to get 4 teams into the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament next Spring. The front-runners are Duke, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Wake Forest. That could be all that get in, and it's hard to argue with them. The problem, as with football, is a lack of quality non-conference wins.

ACC men's basketball power rankings: Duke holds down top spot, surprise teams climb amid conference chaos (dukechronicle.com; Staff)
With nothing but ACC games from now until March, our beats are here with another installment of The Chronicle's Power Rankings of each team vying for the ACC crown:
1. Duke (10-1)
Previous ranking: 1 // Average ranking: 1.0
I’m sure this one is shocking. The Blue Devils haven’t faced a quality opponent since their loss at Ohio State, but it doesn’t matter—they’ve shown thus far that they’re probably the only true contender out of the ACC this season (and perhaps will be the conference’s only NCAA tournament team). Anything short of the program’s first ACC regular-season title since 2010 has to be considered a disappointment at this point. -Evan Kolin
They started ranked 13th in the preseason ACC poll. We had them at ninth a few weeks ago. This week, the Demon Deacons are one of two ACC teams remaining to have only suffered one loss—and that one loss was against LSU, the No. 3 team in the nation according to the NET rankings. Star guard Alondes Williams is giving Duke’s Wendell Moore Jr. a run for his money in the race for the most ridiculous stat line with averages of 21.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists, and Wake Forest handled its nonconference schedule in a manner few other ACC teams could, despite close calls with VMI and Charlotte last week. The unranked Demon Deacons are on a five-game win streak and are rolling into the true conference season. -Micah Hurewitz
3. North Carolina (8-3)
Previous ranking: 3 // Average ranking: 3.1
North Carolina is an interesting team, because by all accounts, the Blue Blood program is underperforming, yet is still one of the best ACC teams. It came into the season with a preseason No. 19 ranking, but by third week of the season it was out of the rankings completely. With their history and roster, the Tar Heels should be making a case for the top spot in these rankings and are simply not. North Carolina got embarrassed by Kentucky 98-69 in the CBS Sports Classic, a game that was supposed to be a marquee matchup between powerhouse teams. Its other two losses, against ranked opponents Tennessee and Purdue, weren’t particularly close either, and its only ranked win came against Michigan, another team that is massively underperforming and has since fallen out of the rankings. With this kind of season baggage, it just doesn’t make sense to rank them above an 11-1 up-and-comer like Wake Forest. -Sasha Richie
It hasn’t been the smoothest few weeks for the Hokies, who fell into a funk after their first loss of the season against Memphis, losing four of six. But head coach Mike Young’s squad bounced back in a big way last time out, trouncing a good St. Bonaventure team at the Hall of Fame Shootout behind sparkling shooting nights from starting guards Storm Murphy and Hunter Cattoor. In a season that has been most unkind to nearly all of the preseason conference favorites, Virginia Tech still feels like a safe bet to contend in the ACC, even after a lukewarm start.
Still, the Hokies don’t appear to have the highest ceiling, dropping both contests against ranked teams thus far. They’ll get a chance to prove me wrong Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, but for now, this Virginia Tech team feels as if it should hover around this spot all the way until March. -Jonathan Levitan
Really? Is Miami a top-five team in the ACC? With the ACC looking as weak as ever, it just might be. The Hurricanes’ 8-3 record is the conference’s third-best mark, and they have not suffered too embarrassing a loss this month. Miami rides a four-game winning streak, in which it took down Clemson in its first ACC game of the season. Miami is likely to slip down this list as conference play ramps up in the coming weeks—it was picked to finish 12th in the preseason media poll—but for now, sixth-year player Kameron McGusty has helped extend Hurricane season to December. -Glen Morgenstern

103 years strong: How the Manlius Arts Cinema weathered the pandemic and a changing movie industry (PS; $; Mintzer)
Inside the small but well-kept lobby of the Manlius Arts Cinema, the buttery scent of popcorn infuses the air.
A glass case displays classic movie theatre candy––Mike and Ikes and Reese’s Pieces––in neon-bright rectangular boxes.
Vintage film reels adorn the wall behind the concessions counter; a hand-lettered chalkboard sign lists the prices for snacks and drinks.
Married couple Nat Tobin and Eileen Lowell, the owners, work the ticket and concessions counter; they greet their guests, most of whom are familiar faces, with enthusiasm. If a customer asks for a hot tea selection, Lowell produces a small box.
“We’re the only theatre in Onondaga County with a tea chest,” she quipped.
The tea chest isn’t the only thing that makes the Manlius Arts Cinema special. It’s also the oldest cinema in Onondaga County; in December of this year, it will be 103 years old. It opened in 1918 as a silent film theater in the midst of the influenza pandemic, and despite some inevitable challenges, it’s enduring through the current pandemic, too.
Manlius town historian Barbara Rivette said that the Manlius Arts Cinema was the first theatre of its kind in eastern Onondaga county.
“Movies were such a new thing, and there were several storefront operations that were not really theatres,” she said. “This building was built specifically to show moving pictures.”

Previous ranking: 3 // Average ranking: 3.1North Carolina is an interesting team, because by all accounts, the Blue Blood program is underperforming, yet is still one of the best ACC teams.
4. Virginia Tech (8-4)
Previous ranking: 2 // Average ranking: 6.3It hasn’t been the smoothest few weeks for the Hokies, who fell into a funk after their first loss of the season against Memphis, losing four of six.
5. Miami (8-3)
Previous ranking: 13 // Average ranking: 6.6Really?
