Welcome to Festivus!

Festivus is a holiday that shuns the commercialism and pressures of the Christmas season, and takes place on December 23 each year. It was invented by writer Daniel O'Keefe, and originally celebrated by his family. The holiday permeated American culture after O'Keefe's son, Dan O'Keefe, wrote the holiday into an episode of Seinfeld titled "The Strike," which was first broadcasted on December 18, 1997. In the episode, the holiday was created by George Costanza's father Frank, and was celebrated at Frank and Estelle Costanza's house, with the attendance of Kramer, Jerry, Elaine, George, George's boss Kruger, and two men that Cramer invited that Elaine had been trying to avoid.

Orange Watch: Can Syracuse take advantage of a down ACC? - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Heading into the hoped-for earnest start of ACC conference play next week, with only one ranked league team, there’s opportunity for Syracuse to find its groove and enough wins to make the NCAA Tournament, provided the variants of COVID-19 don’t continue to play havoc with everyday life.

With its two postponed games this past weekend against Lehigh, and Tuesday night against Cornell, and the fill-in game with another Ivy member Brown set for this coming Monday, December 27 (6:00 p.m. ET) at the Dome, Syracuse will have a 16-day gap between games.

Brown (8-5) provides a nice tune-up before heading into the rest of the league schedule two nights later (December 29) hosting Georgia Tech, and may result with 30 (or fewer) total games, instead of the planned 31 contests.

ACC teams are a cumulative 109-60 (64.5%) through games of December 21, and there have been relatively few standout victories along with plenty of mystifying defeats among the 15 teams.

Only Duke is ranked (second) with North Carolina and Virginia Tech receiving votes. The only one loss teams are the Blue Devils, no surprise, and Wake Forest, big surprise. Here’s an overview:

Georgia Tech, which is scheduled to play Syracuse next week, has cancelled its next game due to Covid concerns (PS; Waters)

Georgia Tech has postponed its men’s basketball game against Alabama A&M, which had been scheduled for Thursday.

The postponement, which was announced Wednesday afternoon, came as a result of health and safety protocols within Georgia Tech’s program.

Georgia Tech’s next game is now at Syracuse on Wednesday, Dec. 29, but that game could now be in jeopardy.

The ACC’s athletic directors revised the conference’s rules regarding team eligibility and reversed an earlier rule that forced teams to forfeit games if they could not play due to the coronavirus.

The announcement from the ACC read: For men’s and women’s basketball, a team must have a roster minimum of seven available student-athletes and one countable coach to play a game. If a team does not have the requisite number of participants, and elects not to play, the game shall be a no contest.

It’s unknown as this time how many Georgia Tech players have tested positive for the virus or when they tested positive, which would determine when they would be cleared to play again.

Back-to-back blowout losses have happened to Jay Wright and Coach K, but what about Jim Boeheim? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

Around this time of year, children write their letters to Santa, but Syracuse basketball fans send their letters to Mike’s Mailbox all year round!

It’s amazing the number of questions that are sent to the Mailbox. I appreciate each and every one of them.

So I want to thank those of you who have sent in questions and also those of you who just like to read along.

Happy holidays and a Happy New Year from the Mailbox.

Now, on to those questions!

Q: I saw that Villanova lost back-to-back games last week to Baylor and Creighton by 20 or more points. I read that it was the first time that had happened in Jay Wright’s 21 years. When was the last time Syracuse lost back-to-back games by 20 or more points under Jim Boeheim?

Ken T.

Mike:
It sometimes takes a question like this to realize something pretty remarkable.

Villanova did lose consecutive games last week: 57-36 to Baylor and 79-59 to Creighton. It was, indeed, the first time that Villanova had lost back-to-back games by at least 20 points in Jay Wright’s 21-year tenure at the school.

I became even more intrigued with the question when I saw my colleague Stephen Wiseman, who covers Duke for the Durham Herald-Sun and the Raleigh News & Observer, tweet that Mike Krzyzewski has suffered consecutive losses of 20 points or more only once in his 42 years at Duke. It happened in the 1982-83 season.

Syracuse Basketball: Big-time offers, interest for talented big-man target (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2023 target Joseph Estrella is seeing his recruitment heat up on a national scale.

Per his Twitter page, the 6-foot-10 power forward recently picked up scholarship offers from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Boston College, as well as Big Ten Conference squad Iowa.

That’s in addition to other recent offers from Providence, Tennessee and Harvard. Orange coaches offered the talented and under-rated Estrella this past August at the team’s annual Elite Camp, and I believe that this was the first college scholarship offer for the junior at South Portland High School in South Portland, Maine.

It’s likely that Estrella has a way to go with his recruiting process before making a decision, but these are already some impressive offers.

Iowa, for example, does a really great job of recruiting and developing big men. Former Hawkeyes star center Luka Garza was a recent national player of the year, and former ‘Cuse 2021 big-man target Riley Mulvey chose Iowa.

ACC Changes COVID-19 Forfeiture Rule, Wake Forest Loss Off Books - Sports Illustrated Boston College Eagles News, Analysis and More (SI; Black)

Boston College's lone ACC loss of the season is officially off the books as the ACC AD's voted to change their COVID-19 policy. Matt Norlander of CBS Sports reported the new rules:

This is a drastic shift in the policy that previously stated "if a 2021-22 ACC game cannot be played on its originally scheduled date by a team unable to play due to an insufficient number of available players related to COVID-19, that team shall be deemed to have forfeited." Now a team will have their game ruled a "no contest", unless a team chooses not to play in a league game, in which that would be a forfeit.

The other takeaway from this change in rules, is that it retroactively impacts games forfeited because of COVID, according to Norlander. That means Boston College's loss for Wednesday's game against Wake Forest, caused by a forfeit because of an outbreak on the Eagles roster will no longer count. The game now is ruled a "no contest." The Eagles will return to 1-0 in the conference.

There is no word about any changes to any rescheduling policy.

CNY’s best dishes of 2021: Our food writers pick their favorites (PS; $; Miller)

Over the past year, our our food writers―Jared Paventi, Jane Woodman and Charlie Miller—bought and sampled hundreds of dishes throughout Central New York. Some were entrées the chef built an entire meal around, others were appetizers that stole the show before it even started. Some were in fancy sit-down dining rooms, some were from takeout-only counters.

Here are some of our favorite dishes of 2021 and why we think you should try them too:

Short ribs: Moro’s Kitchen

Dinner at Moro's Kitchen, Skaneateles, N.Y.

Boneless short rib over polenta at Moro's Kitchen, Skaneateles, N.Y. (Jared Paventi | jaredpaventi@gmail.com)

Address: 28 Jordan St, Skaneateles. (315) 685-6116

From Jared Paventi: I have eaten at Ed Moro’s restaurants more times than I can remember and I always end up coming back to the short ribs. The chef’s signature dish started at his flagship restaurant in Auburn and have been replicated at Moro’s Kitchen in Skaneateles. I wrote, “The short rib dish at his Skaneateles restaurant Moro’s Kitchen was so tender from braising that it split simply from looking at it.” The umami in this dish left me wanting a second plateful. Instead, I went home and tried to replicate it the next day. My version wasn’t as good, which is why I’ll always come back to Moro’s short ribs.

Paella mariscos: Otro Cinco

Address: 206 S. Warren St., Syracuse. (315) 422-6876

From Jared Paventi: Otro Cinco, the downtown sibling of Alta Cinco, ditched the Mexican side of the menu and went all in on Spain. And, at the center of the menu was paella. The seafood version, or paella mariscos, starts with a layer of rice and saffron broth and gets an abundance of clams, mussels, squid, and shrimp. Peppers, onions, garlic and snap peas are blended to add depth. It was, hyperbole aside, the best entree I wrote about in 2021.
