Welcome to Pepper Pot Soup Day!

According to legend, pepper pot soup was created on today's date in 1777, ten days after General George Washington and the Continental Army had set up their winter camp at Valley Forge. The camp was located about twenty miles from Philadelphia, where the British were headquartered. The Winter of 1777-1778 ended up being especially harsh and bitter, and the troops often went without bread or meat. Shortly after arriving, some troops almost mutinied, and about a third of the men didn't even have boots. Farmers in the area sold their produce to the British instead of Continental soldiers because the Continental currency was depreciated and unreliable. It didn't look like the army would be able to hold together with the meager provisions they had.

General Washington sent out foraging groups to look for food supplies. It is believed that Washington told his baker general, Christopher Ludwick, to come up with a soup that "will warm and strengthen the body of a soldier and inspire his flagging spirit." Whatever was found during the foraging was used to make the soup. Legend says that the soup was first made on December 29, 1777, and had tripe, other meat and vegetable scraps, and peppercorn and other spices. Perhaps the biggest part of the legend surrounding pepper pot soup is that it rejuvenated the troops, not only to get them through the winter but to set the foundation for them to win the war. In fact, it earned the nickname "the soup that won the war."

Syracuse basketball vs. Cornell: What to know (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse’s men’s basketball team embarks on its second game in three days Wednesday night, when neighboring Cornell visits for a 7 p.m. contest in the Carrier Dome.

This one was postponed from Dec. 21 after Covid-19 ravaged the Syracuse roster. Cornell had canceled a home game on Dec. 19 after a rising number of Covid cases on its campus.

Syracuse (6-5) is coming off a convincing win over Brown on Monday when the Orange scored 55 second-half points and ran away with a game that had turned close by the half. Cornell (8-2) has not played since it lost 93-60 at Virginia Tech on Dec. 8.

Here are a few things to consider about the game:

Jimmy Boeheim is the obvious asterisk.

The Syracuse forward played three seasons at Cornell before the pandemic struck, shutting down the Ivy League for what would have been Boeheim’s final college basketball season. He announced last spring he would graduate from Cornell and then play a final graduate season at Syracuse.

Boeheim has maintained all along that he would have finished his career at Cornell, a place he loved, had Covid-19 not interfered. He’s having a nice season at SU thus far, averaging 14.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. His .438 shooting percentage from the 3-point line ranks second only to Joe Girard (.507) among his SU teammates and is a remarkable improvement from his final season at Cornell when he made 29.5% of his threes.

Something else to consider: Jimmy Boeheim is zeroing in on 1,000 career college points. He has 957.

Cornell is playing really fast this season.

The Big Red ranks No. 1 nationally in pace of play on offense, according to kenpom.com. Cornell uses 14.2 seconds in an average offensive possession. Syracuse is also playing fast on offense; the Orange rank 53rd in that category, using 16.2 seconds in an average offensive possession.

Opponent preview: What to know about Cornell, SU’s final nonconference game (DO; Crane)

Syracuse’s final nonconference matchup of the 2021-22 season, pending a rescheduled game against Lehigh, places Jimmy Boeheim and the Orange against Cornell — his former team — and a Big Red program that’s lost just two games this season.

The Orange enter off a 93-62 victory over Brown, while Cornell hasn’t played since losing to Virginia Tech by 33 on Dec. 8. The Big Red’s Dec. 19 game against Bryant was canceled after the university moved into Alert Level Red due to rising COVID-19 cases and potential presence of the omicron variant on campus. Then, a game against the Orange four days later was postponed after at least 14 of 20 members of the Syracuse program tested positive, too.

Here’s what you need to know about the Big Red (8-2) before their series with Syracuse (6-5, 1-0 Atlantic Coast) is renewed, as the two teams couldn’t meet last year following the Ivy League’s postponement of its season.

All-time series

Syracuse leads, 94-31

Last time they played

Behind 22 points from Elijah Hughes and 16 from Buddy Boeheim, Syracuse outscored the Big Red by 18 in the second after leading by just one at the break, and it pulled away for a 72-53 win on Nov. 20, 2019. It helped the Orange improve to 3-1 in their young season, though they’d lose four of their next six games to give them five losses before the calendar flipped to 2020.

Jimmy, then a starting forward with the Big Red, led all scorers with 25 points, hitting 7-of-16 shots and attempting 11 free throws. He scored 12 of Cornell’s 25 points in the first half to help the Big Red remain in striking distance. But after he hit a free throw that trimmed Cornell’s deficit to 44-41 with 9:56 remaining, Syracuse scored 28 of the final 37 points to break open what had been a tight game.

Syracuse basketball caught fire from deep, but free-throw shooting awful (itlh; Adler)

Coming into its non-conference encounter with Ivy League member Brown on Monday night in Central New York, it’s safe to say that Syracuse basketball senior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim and senior forward Cole Swider had been struggling from beyond the arc.

But the two of them, along with junior point guard Joe Girard III and graduate student forward Jimmy Boeheim, proved tremendous from 3-point land in a blow-out triumph over the Bears.

As a team, per ESPN statistics, the Orange connected on 13 shots from deep, and the ‘Cuse made nearly 62 percent of its 3-point attempts.

What’s more, the Orange hit on an impressive 57.4 percent from the field as a whole, as ‘Cuse players, in an encouraging sign, didn’t rely solely on 3-pointers. Rather, Syracuse basketball did a solid job of driving to the hoop and scoring from the mid-range.

Buddy Boeheim was lights-out in the second half, and he finished with a squad-high 28 points. When Boeheim, his brother, Girard and Swider are all clicking from the field, the Orange is going to prove really tough to take down.

Syracuse basketball, though, was abysmal from the charity stripe.

I can’t find too many things to complain about as it pertains to the Orange’s 93-62 conquest of the Bears (8-6), a group that had played multiple tight games against strong competition.

However, the ‘Cuse (6-5, 1-0) did commit 12 turnovers. More importantly, Syracuse basketball was just 10-of-20 from the free-throw line. Connecting on merely 50 percent from the charity stripe simply won’t do.

Otherwise, though, the Orange played quite well, limiting Brown to only 62 points while notching 93 points on offense versus a fairly credible Bears defense.

The ‘Cuse won the battle on the boards, collected nine steals, shared the ball with precision in producing 23 assists and only committed eight personal fouls.

To reiterate, Buddy Boeheim and Swider faring well from 3-point range are huge for Syracuse basketball moving forward. Junior center Jesse Edwards generated eight points, six boards and three blocks. He’s so vastly improved from a term ago.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star Canadian target balls out at prestigious event (itlh; Adler)

Canadian five-star wing Elijah Fisher, who received a Syracuse basketball offer back in the summer of 2020, recently showed why he’s one of the best all-around prospects within the 2023 recruiting cycle.

The 6-foot-7 Fisher, a junior at the Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario, played at an extremely high level during the prestigious 2021 City of Palms Classic, which was recently held at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.

According to tweets from The HS Circuit, in one game, Fisher recorded 22 points, five rebounds and two steals in his team’s win over Victory Rock Prep out of Bradenton, Fla.

In a second contest, the Crestwood Preparatory College fell to the nationally ranked Combine Academy from Lincolnton, N.C. Fisher, though, was magnificent, tallying 25 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals versus the Combine Academy.

Fisher, a consensus top-20 player in his class, is certainly known as an elite scorer, but he also filled up the stat sheet in other ways at the City of Palms Classic.

Let’s update the recruitment of Elijah Fisher, who holds a Syracuse basketball offer.

A recent tweet from recruiting analyst Joe Tipton says that, these days, Fisher is hearing the most from Alabama, Memphis, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

New ACC COVID-19 Guidelines Could See Shift In Cancellations & Postponements (SI; Black)

On Monday, the ACC quickly responded to the new CDC guidelines around COVID-19 quarantining. The Center for Disease Control announced a recommendation reducing the number of days a positive test case would be required to quarantine from ten days to five.

The ACC give options for the positive individual to end their quarantine

  • Once asymptomatic, the individual has two negative tests (i.e., molecular PCR or antigen) from specimens that are collected at least 24 hours apart; or
  • At least seven (7) days have elapsed since the first positive test, the individual’s symptoms are improving, and the individual has one negative test (i.e., molecular PCR or antigen) within 24 hours of being cleared.
  • Such an individual must be fever-free for at least 24 hours to be cleared under either of the above options.
These rules come on the heels of a rash of cancellations throughout the conference, including basketball and bowl season. Currently the conference has had to cancel three bowls games (Military, Sun & Fenway), and will lose the income associated with those payouts.

The new guidelines could be impactful for the Boston College basketball program who have been on a COVID-19 pause due to an outbreak in the program. The Eagles have missed a game because of the recent cases, including Wake Forest (December 22) and will miss tomorrow's matchup with Florida State. While information regarding this outbreak is still airtight because of health records and privacy, a shorter quarantine could improve the chances of a game for the Eagles on Saturday against North Carolina.

Tom Cruise surprises Ohio State marching band with a special invitation (PS; Lesmerises)

When the Ohio State University Marching Band offered a tribute to the movie “Top Gun” as its halftime show for the Purdue game on Nov. 13, a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. That happens a lot with the pop culture references and eye-pleasing formations that The Best Damn Band In The Land drops on audiences during the course of an Ohio State season.

But someone in particular really liked the show, and he let TBDBITL know about it over winter break.

Tuesday, the Twitter account for Ohio State’s Marching Band (@TBDBITL) shared the news that Syracuse native Tom Cruise saw the performance and was so impressed, he offered the band a special thank you.

Our band got a huge surprise this morning from @TomCruise! Thanks for the shirts and movie screening, Tom, and we’re so thrilled you enjoyed our @TopGunMovie halftime show! #GoBucks✈️ pic.twitter.com/KmF6YKIFnr

“Dear Band, The Top Gun tribute was fantastic. What a phenomenal performance,” the message from the 59-year-old actor began. It ended with an invitation for the band to see a special screening in Columbus of the sequel to the movie that has been years in the making.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is due to be released in May, 36 years after the original movie’s release.

Cruise also sent “Top Gun: Maverick” T-shirts for the band. And he wished the OSU football team good luck in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, where the band will be performing another one of its shows, as well as marching in the Tournament of Roses parade.

We'll be celebrating the new year in Pasadena! See you at the @RoseParade and @rosebowlgame! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/B9x0aPgyN1

Cruise, who was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1962, is a three-time Oscar-nominated actor who’s starred in movies like “Mission: Impossible,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Days of Thunder,” “Risky Business,” “Minority Report” and “A Few Good Men.”

As for “Top Gun,” here’s the performance that impressed Cruise so much:
