It's the perfect time to focus on them since winter precludes you from gardening outside. It's also shortly after the new year, meaning you've probably already taken down your Christmas tree or other holiday decorations, leaving your house pretty bare—perhaps you find a neglected houseplant in the corner, or perhaps your find nothing at all. Common houseplants include aloe vera, bamboo, spider plants, rubber plants, and African violets. Houseplants are perfect for in homes because they can grow with low light, low humidity, and in cooler temperatures. SU News ACC basketball power rankings: How far did Syracuse fall after 0-2 week on road? (PS; $; Waters) The ACC power rankings got a big shakeup this week. Not only was there a full slate of conference games, but Miami capped off the weekend with a huge upset of Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils had been the one constant during the first two months of the season. Duke was the obvious No. 1 pick each and every week, sitting at the top of a muddled conference. So now what? Is Duke still No. 1? Or does Miami, which is undefeated in the ACC, deserve the honor? And what to make of the rest of the conference where only two other teams besides Miami managed to go 2-0 last week? 1. Miami Record: 13-3 (5-0) Last week’s ranking: 3rd Last week’s results: Win 88-87 over Syracuse; Win 76-74 over Duke This week’s schedule: Tuesday at Florida State Why No. 1? It’s impossible to ignore Miami’s 5-0 record in the ACC, especially after the Hurricanes went into Cameron Indoor Stadium and knocked off Duke on Saturday. 2. Duke Record: 12-2 (2-1) Last week’s ranking: 1st Last week’s results: Win 69-57 over Georgia Tech; Lost 76-74 to Miami This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Wake Forest; Saturday vs. N.C. State Why No. 2? The argument for Duke is that despite the loss to Miami on Saturday, the Blue Devils are still the best team in the ACC. That may be the case, but that’s not what happened on the court Saturday. In this case, we have to go by the results, but we also expect Duke to reclaim the top spot soon. 3. Wake Forest Record: 13-3 (3-2) Last week’s ranking: 6th Last week’s results: Win 76-54 over Florida State; Win 77-74 OT over Syracuse This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. Duke; Saturday at Virginia Why No. 3? Wake bounced back from two losses in the week prior and won twice this past week. With three of the teams ahead of them suffering losses this past week, Wake inches up the rankings. ... Five Takeaways: Wake Forest 77 Syracuse 74 (OT) (SI; McAllister) Syracuse fell 77-74 in overtime at Wake Forest on Saturday. Here are my five takeaways from the loss. 1. Edwards Needs to Stay on the Floor Syracuse is a much better team when Jesse Edwards is on the floor. He fouled out in just 20 minutes against Wake Forest, and the Orange simply needs him to be smarter when committing fouls. It is true that two or three of his fouls were bad calls, but he also has a propensity for reaching in unnecessarily and challenging when he needs to let a player go. Such as his fifth foul, when he challenged a transition layup as the last line of defense. It was more important, at that time, to stay on the floor than prevent that basket. That is all part of the learning process, but the sooner that clicks the better. Jesse had taken strides the previous two games, playing 38 and 31 minutes. However, he still fouled out of both and has now fouled out of four straight games. 2. Defensive Improvement It is fair to criticize Syracuse's defensive effort this season. However, it is also fair to say the defense against Wake Forest was pretty good for the most part. Sure there were break downs at times and some open shots allowed, but the Orange showed defensive promise in this game. Not that Syracuse will ever be an elite defensive team, but that they can be at least decent. Wake came in averaging over 80 points per game as the ACC's second highest scoring offense, shooting 48% from the floor. Syracuse held the Demon Deacons to 69 points in regulation and 42% shooting. Both well below Wake's season averages. Closeouts were better, contests were better and players were not out of position nearly as much. Wake was just 3-16 from three in the second half. For those looking for positive signs moving forward, including Syracuse's ability to keep the winning seasons streak alive, this should be front and center. It was not a half of solid defense, it was a full game. ... Bleav in Syracuse Episode 28 (SI; podcast; Bleav) Mike and Kyle have transitioned to basketball. Maybe they had to squint at the standings or text a friend to make sure it was true. No, Martha, it’s not fake news. The Syracuse University men’s basketball team is 7-8 and has a losing record 15 games into the season. Perish the thought. The last time this happened under head coach Jim Boeheim was, well, never. The last time this happened to SU basketball overall was 53 years ago during Roy Danforth’s first season as head coach (1968-69). There are many SU fans among us who were alive the last time this happened and can share what this feeling is like for the uninitiated. The question is how generations of Orange fans who literally have never felt a losing record this deep into a season will handle it. There’s no record of it. There was no Twitter back when Nixon was president. ... MBB Schedule 2022 Jan 8-12th (RX; HM) [HEADING=2]MBB Schedule 2022 Jan 8-12th[/HEADING] From the official ACC Release of Friday, Jan. 7, 2022...
