Welcome to the Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year, also called chunjie (春节) in China, and known as the Spring Festival, is the foremost holiday in China, and is celebrated by Chinese people all over the world. It is also known as the Lunar New Year, as it follows the lunar calendar. Asian countries like Vietnam, North Korea, and South Korea celebrate it as such. Although the weather is still quite cold when the festival is celebrated, it welcomes Spring, a season of planting, fresh starts, and new beginnings.

Chinese New Year begins on January 1 of the lunar calendar and lasts until the 15th, which is a full moon. Being that the celebration begins on the eve of the holiday, it is a sixteen-day celebration. On the last day, the first full moon of the lunar year, Chinese New Year ends, and the Lantern Festival is held. Ultimately, the Chinese New Year takes place sometime between January 21 and February 20 on the Gregorian Calendar. Years in China are associated with a zodiac animal. There is a twelve-year cycle of animals which includes, in order, the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.

Cole Swider's push to be an aggressive shooter materialized vs. Wake Forest (DO; Shetty)

In the final 90 seconds against Miami on Jan. 5, Buddy Boeheim fouled out with just nine points, leaving the rest of Syracuse in a precarious position. The Orange were down five to a Hurricanes team that pretty much scored at will.

But in that moment, Cole Swider stepped up to complete his first 20-point game of the season against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. His 3-pointer with four seconds left gave Syracuse a lifeline in a game where it had blown a 14-point halftime lead. After Miami’s Isaiah Wong missed a free throw, Swider received the ball again, running up the court in just two seconds before heaving a 3 between two defenders.

Swider’s shot beat the buzzer, but the Orange still lost by one point. After scoring just six in the first half, his second-half effort provided a glimpse into the offensive weapon he could be for SU.

“I hope that the end of the game helps Cole. We wouldn’t want him to take those shots normally, but he’s got to be more aggressive offensively,” head coach Jim Boeheim said after the game. “He’s catching it too many times and standing. He’s got to get to the basket or shoot the ball.”
In January, Swider took strides into becoming the aggressive shooter Boeheim wanted him to be since his transfer from Villanova. It all came together on Saturday night against Wake Forest when Swider scored 18 points, shooting 72.7% from the field. After the game, Boeheim said he thought this game was the best Swider has played.

“I thought Cole got into his spot better than he has all year,” Boeheim said.

Bleav in Syracuse Episode 32

Syracuse podcast episode 32, presented by Bet Online and Hofmann Sausage Company, is out! Mike McAllister and Kyle Leff take a look at Syracuse football's 2022 schedule and break down Orange basketball's big win over Wake Forest.

Syracuse Basketball: Crazy loud fans made the Dome electric – yes, please (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball smoked one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s premier squads throughout the 2021-22 campaign this past Saturday night, and the crowd inside the Carrier Dome was simply fabulous.

Students had already ventured back for the current semester, which certainly helped the cause. Between the students and the general Syracuse-area community, more than 23,000 fans piled into the Dome, according to the crowd announced by SU officials.

I absolutely loved seeing this. We all know that the 2021-22 season has proven a tough one to date for the ‘Cuse, and it’s understandable that a lot of Orange fans are disappointed, upset and even angry.

We even documented in a column late last week some of the feelings of certain ‘Cuse fans. In any event, it appears that the announced crowd for the Orange’s triumph over the Demon Deacons was the largest so far in 2021-22 on a college campus.

All I can say about this is, heck yeah!

Syracuse basketball fans were amazing in their support of the Orange last weekend.

After the ‘Cuse (10-11, 4-6) handled Wake Forest, 94-72, Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim said in his post-game press conference that it was good to have the students back. He said the fans really got into the game, and that proved helpful to his squad.

Boeheim averaged 27.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in 38.5 minutes per game against Pitt and Wake Forest last week. Banchero averaged a double-double with 15.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in wins over Clemson (71-69) and Louisville (74-65) last week. The Seattle native took over late against Clemson, hitting back-to-back buckets for Duke in the game’s final 90 seconds to seal the victory. Banchero scored a game-high 19 points versus the Tigers, including 14 points in the second half, to go with seven rebounds and four assists. He scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, including six offensive boards, and added three assists in the Saturday win at Louisville. With the game tied 60-60 with 8:28 remaining, Banchero grabbed five rebounds, had an assist, blocked a shot at the rim and hit a key bucket over the closing stretch as Duke outscored Louisville 14-5. ‘High impact’ winter storm could bring heavy snow, ice to Upstate NY (PS; Coin)

Update
: The weather service has now expanded the winter storm watch to include Central New York, the Southern Tier and the Adirondacks.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A winter storm could drop heavy snow, ice, sleet and freezing rain on Upstate New York beginning Wednesday and lasting through Friday.

The storm could bring everything from difficult driving to potential flooding to power outages from icing of utility lines.

The National Weather Service office in Binghamton, which forecasts for Central New York, is calling this a “potential high impact” storm system.

The weather service’s Buffalo office has already issued a winter storm watch for all of Western New York and the counties along Lake Ontario. The watch, in effect from Wednesday night to Friday afternoon, says 9 inches of snow or more is possible in those regions.

Odds for rain and sleet increase to the south and east, although forecasters says it’s too early to know how the various pieces of the storm will set up and thus who gets what kind of precipitation. At this point it looks like snow in Western New York and the Adirondacks, with odds of rain and sleet highest in the Southern Tier and Capital District.

Melting snow over the next couple of days combined with rain from the storm could lead to flooding, the weather service said, although there’s no estimates yet of the odds of that or who might be hit hardest. There’s also a chance for thick ice on tree branches and utility lines, which could lead to power outages.

The storm, which Accuweather is dubbing the “Groundhog Day Storm,” will be the product of two separate systems making their way to Upstate New York. One system will be pushing cold air south from Canada and the Upper Great Lakes, while a second system. loaded with moisture, will be moving from the southwest.

It’s too early to know for sure how and when those two systems will meet, and thus who will get snow, rain or something in between. The weather service notes that the storm system that would sweep in from the southwest is just entering the Gulf of Alaska and won’t reach the continental U.S. until Wednesday morning. It will then move rapidly across the country, giving forecasters in the Northeast little time to study it. The forecasts could keep changing up to the last minute, the Buffalo weather service office cautions.
