Georgia Tech falls to Syracuse in overtime (ajc.com; Sugiura)

It was an opportunity that any Georgia Tech supporter would accept. In the final 23 seconds of overtime, Yellow Jackets guard Michael Devoe had three shots with his team down one against Syracuse in the Carrier Dome.

However, Devoe, the third-leading scorer in the ACC who came into the game making 46.4% of his field-goal tries, missed all three, the last as time expired. It left Tech a 74-73 loser to Syracuse on Monday night.

After ending a three-game losing streak in a win Saturday at Pitt, Tech (11-16 overall, 4-12 ACC) fell back into a three-way tie for last place with Clemson and N.C. State. Syracuse (15-12, 9-7) has won six of its past seven.

Down 74-73 in overtime after guard Kyle Sturdivant hit a 3-pointer with 1:36 left, the Jackets survived a Syracuse possession in which the Orange fired up three shots but then failed to take the lead when Sturdivant turned the ball over with about 29 seconds left. But the Jackets gained the ball back with 22.5 seconds left after a Syracuse turnover, just its fourth of the game.

Devoe had two jumpers to take the lead that missed before a held ball with 3.3 seconds left gave the Jackets the ball out of bounds. Forward Khalid Moore passed from the baseline to Devoe, but his fadeaway jump shot from the top of the key, challenged by guard Buddy Boeheim, was off the mark as time expired.

Bracketology – Syracuse Not Projected to Even Make the NIT – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; May)

Syracuse basketball isn’t having its best season, to say the least. The Orange sit at just 14-12 with five games remaining. According to KenPom, they are expected to lose three of them, but it could very well be four or even five.

It’s officially not a bold take to say SU will need to run the gauntlet in the ACC Tournament in order to make the NCAA Tournament. With those chances being slim to none, it’s all but guaranteed that Syracuse will not be dancing this year.

Without their eyes set on March Madness, the next option for the Orange is the National Invitation Tournament, or more commonly known as the NIT. If you aren’t familiar, the NIT is the secondary tourney with the next best 32 teams. There are 68 teams in the NCAA Tournament and 32 schools in the NIT. So, all you have to be is one of the top 100 teams in the country to play in the postseason.

According to multiple bracketology websites, Syracuse is not projected to make the NCAA Tournament, or even the NIT.

Five Takeaways: Syracuse 74 Georgia Tech 73 (OT) (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse escaped the Carrier Dome with a 74-73 overtime win over Georgia Tech on Monday. Here are five takeaways from the victory.

1. Gritty Win

Syracuse shot under 33% from the floor, only 31% from beyond the arc, was outrebounded by nine, and was outscored in the paint 34-20. Buddy Boeheim was scoreless in the first half and just 5-20 shooting overall. Joe Girard was just 3-15 shooting. Jimmy Boeheim missed his last eight shots. Frank Anselem fouled out. Despite all of that, Syracuse won. How? Taking care of the basketball (only four turnovers compared to 14 for Georgia Tech) and getting stops in critical moments. It was not pretty and there were a lot of missed opportunities, but Syracuse found a way to win a game it had to have.

2. Bourama in the Clutch

Sidibe made several critical plays in overtime for Syracuse. Down two early in the extra session, Sidibe drove from the three point line and finished at the rim. He blocked shots, kept rebounds alive and dove after loose balls. Syracuse does not win without Sidibe's efforts. He finished with five points, five rebounds, two steals and one block 16 minutes. He also played the entire overtime period with four fouls.

3. Tale of Two Halves

Jimmy Boeheim was 6-10 shooting in the first half and kept Syracuse in the game when no one else could buy a bucket. He was 0-7 after intermission. Buddy Boeheim was scoreless in the first half on 0-8 shooting. He finished with 15 points and was 5-12 after halftime. Frank Anselem struggled mightily in the first half and had zero rebounds. He finished with 10 rebounds and two blocks. It was just a weird game from that perspective where it felt like whatever was going on in the first, the opposite happened after halftime.

‎Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse had one of its worst offensive performances of the season, but still clawed out a win over Georgia Tech. Did this actually show improvement from the Orange? Plus, Bourama Sidibe gave SU some critical minutes down the stretch. Is this the beginning of a successful stretch for Sidibe or will the 5 game in 10 day stretch catch up to his health? Also, how much does winning 6 of 7 games change the perspective of the season?

Tim Leonard and Tyler Aki discuss it all and more on the Tuesday edition of the Locked on Syracuse Podcast.

Yellow Jacket Jolt: SU defeats Georgia Tech 74-73 in OT (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

You never know when an entertaining basketball game may break out.

Even on a night it wasn’t even supposed to happen.

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team defeated Georgia Tech 74-73 in overtime on Monday night at the Carrier Dome.

The game was originally scheduled for Dec. 29 but postponed due to positive Covid-19 tests within the Georgia Tech program.

Neither team had more than a nine-point lead throughout the game. A shot at the buzzer in regulation by Jimmy Boeheim bounced off the rim to call in the extra session.

The good news?

ACC Roundup - UNC And Syracuse Pull Out Wins, But BC? Wow. (DBR; King)

In Monday’s ACC Action, Syracuse nipped Georgia Tech 74-73, Boston College crushed Florida State 71-55 and UNC got by Louisville 70-63.

A few quick points here:

Brady Manek has been much better than we ever thought he could be. We certainly don’t mean to compare him to Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, but those guys proved you could dominate more talented players by outthinking them. Manek is not spectacularly gifted, but he shoots well and he’s a damn smart player.

Caleb Love is showing an instinct for making winning plays late, but his seven turnovers could have been disastrous. Seven! That’s one every 5.7 minutes (he played all 40). And he’s still not shooting well (6-14) But he scored UNC’s last four points and it’s not the first time lately he’s taken his team home. Imperfect? Obviously. Showing up when he’s needed? Yeah he has.

Louisville was in this game very late but threw it away when Jae’Lyn Withers tossed up a long three with Louisville down just 64-63 with 2:18 left and Jarrod West repeated the error with 1:12 left and the Cardinals down 66-63.

Happy Twosday 2-22-22! Every date this week is a palindrome (PS; McGrath)

While February has a lot of notable moments, from Valentine’s Day to leap years, this week’s dates bring an extra special surprise as well.

From Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022 to Monday, Feb. 28, 2022 each date written out in numbers is a palindrome.

A palindrome is a word, number, phrase, or other sequence of letters or numbers that reads the same backward as forward. “Racecar,” “civic” and “level” are all examples of this.

For this week, Wednesday written out in numbers is 2/23/22, which is the same backwards and forwards. Replace the third number in each day and the palindrome remains until the end of the month.

On Tuesday, there’s another cool sequence, as the entire date written in numbers consists of twos. For instance, 2/22/22 is the date on Feb. 22, 2022, which is an especially notable palindrome — or “Twosday.”
