Welcome to Fat Thursday!

Taking place on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent, Fat Thursday is a Christian feast that is primarily celebrated in European countries. It is similar to Fat Tuesday, which is celebrated the following week, but in many European countries, it is the more important holiday of the two. It also is associated with Carnival. As much fasting is done during Lent, Fat Thursday is a day for getting together and eating sweets and other foods that are eschewed during that season. Commonly eaten foods include pączki, berliners, and angel wings.

The holiday is given different names in various European countries, where distinct foods are associated with the day. The day appears to be most widely celebrated in Poland, where it is known as Tłusty Czwartek. Pastries and doughnuts from bakeries are eaten, especially pączki. The tradition of eating doughnuts on the day began in the seventeenth century. In parts of Germany, it is known as Weiberfastnacht. People wear costumes, and celebrations in the streets and in pubs begin at 11:11 a.m. It is known as the "women's carnival" and there is a tradition of women "taking over" town halls. In some parts of Germany, the holiday is also known as Fetter Donnerstag.

Paul Atkinson was on a mission Wednesday night here.

His Notre Dame coaches told him that zone defenses generally surrender space to grab offensive rebounds and suggested that Atkinson might want to consider hunting those misses with particular fervor when the Irish met Syracuse at Purcell Pavilion.

Atkinson is 6-foot-9 and 230 pounds. He is playing a graduate year after spending three seasons at Yale. He knows how to follow directions.

“One of the things we were trying to do was just crash the boards and try to get as many offensive rebounds as possible,” he said. “We took a lot of good shots. I was just trying to get the ones we missed.”

Atkinson grabbed 17 rebounds against the Orange on Wednesday. Eight of them came on the offensive glass, which helps explain the 20 points he scored in Notre Dame’s 79-69 win over the Orange.

Five Takeaways: Notre Dame 79 Syracuse 69 (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball fell 79-69 at Notre Dame Wednesday night. Here are five takeaways from the loss.

1. Joe Girard

Girard was off shooting the ball all night and it was evident right from the start. He finished 1-7 from the floor, including 0-4 from beyond the arc, for just two points. While he did have four assists, he just did not have the same level of energy that we have seen most of the year. Syracuse needs him Girard to hit shots to win games. He has to play better the last three games for the Orange to have a shot. It was a bad time to have one of these types of games in what was a very winnable opportunity.

2. Atkinson Had His Way

Syracuse had no answer for Paul Atkinson Jr. all night long. He finished with 20 points, 17 rebounds and four assists as he dominated offensive and on the glass. Now 14 of those points came in the first half, so the Orange did better defensively in the second. But Atkinson got two huge rebounds in the final 1:03 that helped preserve an Irish win. He was the best player for Notre Dame most of the night.

3. The Shot

After trailing by as many as 12, Syracuse went on a 15-5 run to trim the lead to just two with 4:05 left. Notre Dame called timeout and the Orange had the momentum. Out of the timeout, Syracuse played tremendous defense for about 30 seconds. With the shot clock winding down, Prentiss Hubb had the ball with a defender right on top of him. He stepped back, several steps behind the three point line, and launched an off balance high arching shot that somehow found the bottom of the net. The lead ballooned to five and momentum switched sides. That shot was significant in how the game played out down the stretch. A tough break for Syracuse after playing strong defense the entire possession.

Notre Dame beats Boeheims, Syracuse for 20th win (fightingirishwire.com; Clark)

Don’t let that 79-69 final score fool you. Notre Dame really had to work against Syracuse to earn its 20th victory of the season. In the end, it doesn’t really matter how the Irish bested the legendary Jim Boeheim and his crew. Of course, Mike Brey probably will remind his team that a better effort will be needed every game from now until at least the end of the ACC Tournament.

The Irish (20-8, 13-4) and Orange (15-13, 9-8) had to endure 15 lead changes and 12 ties, and the game remained stressful even though the Irish never trailed again after the first few minutes of the second half. Every time the Irish went on a run, the Orange had an answer, and that was thanks in no small part to Jimmy (27 points) and Buddy Boeheim (20 points).

The Irish were held without a field goal over the final 2:57, so who knows what would have happened if Blake Wesley and Paul Atkinson Jr. hadn’t made nine of 10 free throws in that time? Their lead was only three with a minute and a half left, so they needed every one of those points to keep the pressure off.

Atkinson had a double-double before the first half was even over, and he finished the game with a stat line that was both balanced and productive: 20 points (half of which coming on free throws), 17 rebounds. Nate Laszewski was recovered enough from his stomach ailment to come off the bench and score 15 of his 17 points on five 3-pointers.

Cormac Ryan shot 6 of 9 for 16 points, and Wesley overcome 3-of-13 shooting from the field to score 13. Prentiss Hubb had a season-high 10 assists and a career-high eight rebounds.

Out of Luck: SU basketball loses to Notre Dame 79-69 (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

Prentiss Hubb’s shot hung in the air for what seemed like an eternity.

The 3-point attempt from the Notre Dame senior could have borrowed a phrase from Jimi Hendrix, singing “excuse me, while I kiss the sky” as it sailed toward the net with just one second remaining on the shot clock.

Hubb’s one splash of the game from distance proved to be the backbreaker in a 79-69 win over Syracuse on Wednesday night at Purcell Pavillion in South Bend, Indiana.

It was ironic that a 3-pointer was the kill shot as it was Notre Dame’s dominance of the paint that was the key ingredient to victory.

Syracuse fell to 15-13 (9-8 ACC) with the loss. The Irish (20-8, 13-4) are in second place in the ACC.

Duke, the team that occupies first place in the conference, comes to the Carrier Dome on Saturday for the last scheduled clash of coaching titans Mike Krzyzewsi and Jim Boeheim.

Syracuse Basketball: As Duke game nears, massive visit from 4-star guard (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is set to host top-10 Duke this coming Saturday night, and this Atlantic Coast Conference clash is a monster encounter for a number of reasons.

For one, the Orange will have an opportunity to knock off one of the best squads in the country and pick up a quadrant-one victory. Secondly, the Blue Devils’ legendary head coach and Jim Boeheim’s dear friend, Mike Krzyzewski, will be guiding Duke for the final time at the Carrier Dome.

Krzyzewski, perhaps the greatest head coach in the history of college basketball, is retiring after the 2021-22 campaign. Last but certainly not least, this battle between Syracuse basketball and the Blue Devils coincides with a 2022 four-star guard taking an official visit to the Hill.

Top-35 prospect Judah Mintz will make a trip to Syracuse basketball.

According to various media reports, the 6-foot-3 Mintz is expected to visit the Orange on February 25-27. He has already made visits to DePaul and N.C. State, and Mintz reportedly will travel to Wake Forest on March 2-4.

A senior at the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., Mintz de-committed from fellow ACC group Pittsburgh last November and reopened his recruitment back up.

To date, I haven’t seen any predictions from national analysts or recruiting insiders as to a potential favorite or favorites for Mintz on either the 247Sports Web site or . Besides the four schools he is visiting, I have seen some chatter online that Xavier could be in the mix, too.

Syracuse basketball does have a solid five-member class in 2022, although possibly adding Mintz would be big-time for the Orange in this cycle. Hopefully, he has a great visit to the Hill, and the ‘Cuse fares well versus the Blue Devils.

Interestingly enough, just in the past few days, DePaul landed a commitment from 2022 four-star shooting guard Zion Cruz, according to college basketball insider Adam Zagoria.

Keve Aluma had a double-double, Darius Maddox scored 10 straight points to give Virginia Tech the lead for good and the Hokies hung on for a 62-58 victory over Georgia Tech on Wednesday night. Maddox, who averages 5.4 points a game, finished with 12 points as did Nahiem Alleyne and Aluma, who grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Hokies (17-11, 9-8) gave coach Mike Young his 200th Atlantic Coast Conference win. Michael Devoe scored 18 points and Jordan Usher 11 for Georgia Tech (11-17, 4-13), playing its third game in five days.

Maddox sparked the Hokies after a first half in which they shot just 33% and trailed 34-30. Maddox hit a jumper to break a tie, added a 3-pointer and then five more points in a 13-2 run that Alleyne capped with a 3-pointer for an 11-point lead with just under seven minutes remaining.

Georgia Tech made a final run with Devoe scoring eight points in an 13-5 burst to cut the deficit to 59-56. A goaltending call against Georgia Tech's Miles Kelly brought the run to an end with 14.3 seconds left. Devoe then drove for a basket and the Yellow Jackets fouled twice to get Hunter Cattoor to the line. Cattoor made 1 of 2 and Usher missed a 3-pointer as time ran out.

What to know about Clemson basketball's win against Wake Forest without P.J. Hall (greenville.com; Shanesy)

Clemson’s biggest win of the basketball season was also the most unlikely.

The Tigers were down two injured starters, including top scorer P.J. Hall, and a third was limited Wednesday night, but they pulled off an 80-69 upset of Wake Forest at Littlejohn Coliseum during which they never trailed.

Wake Forest (21-8, 11-7 ACC) had been two games in the loss column out of second place but is now tied for fifth and on the bubble for an NCAA tournament bid. Clemson (13-15, 5-12) had lost six straight, the longest skid in five years.

“We played to our high end,” Clemson coach Brad Brownell said. “We played about to our max, especially without P.J. … It was a little bit of a perfect storm for us, but that’s how upsets happen.”

Hall has been playing most of the season on an injured foot. He was able to go only the opening minute last week at Louisville and was out of the lineup Wednesday for the first time this season. Hall, a 6-foot-10 sophomore from Dorman High School, leads Clemson with 15.5 points per game and adds 5.7 rebounds with 32 blocked shots.

“It’s day to day,” Brownell said. “He’s had the medical people look at him. We’ve sent it off to NBA folks and doctors and everybody feels like he can still play as long as he feels like it and his foot is OK. He just needs to rest for a lot of time. If he feels OK, then he’ll play. It wasn’t good today, so no chance to put him out there.”

Brownell said offseason surgery is a possibility.
