Syracuse Basketball: GMac showing lots of love to Brewster 4-star guard (itlh; Adler)

Based on some recent media reports, I’m getting the sense that 2023 four-star shooting guard Reid Ducharme is a top priority for the Syracuse basketball coaching staff in this class.

The 6-foot-6 Ducharme, who had a fabulous junior season at the powerhouse Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., said in an interview with scouting service Pro Insight that the two college squads he’s hearing the most from lately are the ‘Cuse and Penn State.

Ducharme says that he talks “a ton” to both Syracuse basketball assistant coach Gerry McNamara and Penn State assistant coach Mike Farrelly, adding, “Those two coaches are always talking to me, so they’re definitely showing the most love, right now.”
Naturally, this is great to hear, although I imagine that Ducharme will continue to add high-major scholarship offers in the coming months as he suits up in AAU competitions for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club on the Nike EYBL circuit.

Syracuse basketball seems to be in solid shape with four-star guard Reid Ducharme.

According to reports and recruiting services, besides the Orange, Ducharme holds offers from teams such as Northwestern, Connecticut, Iowa, Providence, Penn State, Creighton, DePaul, Stanford, Harvard, Brown and UMass.

During the 2021-22 season for the Brewster Academy, he was named to the All-NEPSAC (“New England Preparatory School Athletic Council”) Class AAA second team.

He has also been praised for high-level performances at the recently held 2022 National Prep Championship in West Hartford, Conn., as well as during an NCAA live period when he shined for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club.

The Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to Ducharme this past August at the team’s annual Elite Camp.

Syracuse basketball is a suitor for 5-star guard, top-10 national prospect (itlh; Adler)

We recently outlined how Syracuse basketball coaches have doled out scholarship offers and shown interest in some of the highest-rated players within the 2024 recruiting cycle.

That trend seems to be continuing onward. Per a tweet from the director of recruiting at a Maryland-based AAU team, the Orange coaching staff is displaying interest in five-star guard Trentyn Flowers.

The 6-foot-8 Flowers appears to be an extremely versatile player, as I’ve seen him listed on various recruiting Web sites as a point guard, a shooting guard, a small forward and a power forward.

In any event, he’s a consensus top-25 prospect in this class, according to the primary recruiting services, and most of these Web sites place Flowers within the top-10 across the country in the 2024 cycle.

Syracuse basketball appears to be recruiting five-star Trentyn Flowers.

Dwayne Wise, the director of recruiting for the Maryland-based Team Durant on Nike’s EYBL circuit, said in a recent tweet that new suitors for Flowers include the ‘Cuse, North Carolina, Kentucky, Oregon, Texas Tech and TCU.

Syracuse basketball prioritizing 4-star, top-10 guard, who plans official visit (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches offered a scholarship to 2023 four-star guard Elmarko Jackson earlier this month, and a media report published Sunday suggests that the Orange is prioritizing the 6-foot-4, top-50 prospect in this cycle.

According to 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London, Jackson says that while his recruitment remains open, the schools recruiting him the hardest for now are the ‘Cuse, Miami, VCU, St John’s and Maryland.

Additionally, Jackson plans to take an official visit to the Hill over the summer, which is a highly encouraging development without question.

As we’ve detailed in recent columns, the Orange coaching staff has sent out offers to more than 15 players in the 2023 class, and at this juncture, it definitely appears that Jackson is a top target for the ‘Cuse in this cycle.

Syracuse basketball could have a good shot at landing four-star guard Elmarko Jackson.

This weekend, Jackson has been suiting up for WE R1 in the Under Armour Association (“UAA”) league of the AAU circuit during an NCAA live period.

In another live period held earlier this month, Jackson performed at a high level for WE R1, earning praise from On3 national analyst Jamie Shaw.

Per the MaxPreps Web site, during the 2021-22 season for the Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, Pa., Jackson tallied averages of 17.9 points, 5.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per encounter in a strong junior term.

Around the time that the Orange offered Jackson, we noted that his other offers have arrived from teams such as St. John’s, Penn State, Miami, Minnesota, Maryland, VCU, Bryant, La Salle, Ole Miss, Seton Hall and California, according to reports, recruiting services and his Twitter page.

Syracuse Football's NFL Draft Preview And Offseason Priority List. Plus, Syracuse Basketball Might Need A Founding Father Class (audacy.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse football fans might want to consider buying an NFL jersey for one of their own. The only question is, which one? Brad Klein explains. Plus, Dino Babers and Syracuse football have a lot to cover this offseason. Find out what the top of the priority list should look like. Syracuse basketball is already turning heads on the recruiting trail for 2024, but how does that relate to 2022's class?

Syracuse Basketball: Big-man commit grabs player of the year crown in Va. (itlh; Adler)

Simply put, Syracuse basketball 2022 three-star signee Maliq Brown was sensational in his senior season for his prep school in Virginia.

The 6-foot-9 power forward, part of a stellar six-member 2022 class for the Orange that is presently rated in the top-10 nationally according to , was a key force in the Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va., going 30-5 during the 2021-22 campaign and capturing the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (“VISAA”) Division II championship.

As we’ve noted in other recent columns on Brown, in his senior year for the Blue Ridge School, averaged 15.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest, according to the MaxPreps Web site.

He showed an ability to put the ball in the bucket, for sure, but what excites me the most about Brown are his defensive prowess, keen rebounding skills, and physical presence in the interior.

Let’s take a look at a recent award doled out to Syracuse basketball commit Maliq Brown.

In a recent article, The Daily Progress out of Charlottesville, Va., published its All-Central Virginia team for the 2021-22 stanza. I’m pleased to share that this media outlet has named Brown its Player of the Year, which is a beautiful achievement.

Last month, we had a piece detailing that Brown received the VISAA Division II Player of the Year prize, and he was also on the Division II All-State first squad.

In 2021-22, by the way, the Blue Ridge School not only amassed a 30-5 overall mark, but it also went 11-0 in Virginia Independent Conference competition and finished up that term ranked No. 4 across all of Virginia, per MaxPreps.

Other signees in the Orange’s 2022 cycle are rated higher than Brown on a national scale, but I’m telling you, this young man is talented and will be an impact player for the ‘Cuse, maybe not a tremendous amount as a freshman, but certainly over the course of his tenure on the Hill.

He is a consensus three-star prospect in 2022. At the time of this writing, the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rated him the No. 233 overall prospect and the No. 49 power forward in his class.

Syracuse basketball recruit crushes things for City Rocks during live period (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches, earlier this month, offered a scholarship to talented and underrated 2024 wing Damarius Owens, and it’s easy to understand why given his performance this weekend on the AAU circuit during an NCAA live period.

The 6-foot-7 guard/forward, who hails from Upstate New York, has put up some monster games for the Albany City Rocks on Nike’s EYBL circuit in a live period where college coaches, recruiting analysts and others are watching high-school prospects compete in person.

According to box scores provided for his first two contests for the Albany City Rocks, Owens absolutely lit up the scoreboard, averaging 23 points per game over that pair of encounters.

Besides playing for the Albany City Rocks, which has sent numerous of its alumni to the Hill in recent years, Owens recently finished up his sophomore stanza during the 2021-22 campaign for the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio.

Thankfully, Syracuse basketball has entered the recruitment of Damarius Owens early on.

Owens, who previously played at the Aquinas Institute in Rochester, N.Y., disclosed his scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse earlier in April via his Twitter page.

Per his Twitter account and recruiting services, at this juncture, his other offers include from Cincinnati, UMass, Siena and UMBC.

College coaches will be able to start making direct contact with 2024 players in mid-June. Given Owens’ performances in AAU games, I fully anticipate his offer sheet rapidly expanding, and I also imagine he’ll enter the national rankings in this cycle, sooner rather than later.

Blue Devils’ Griffin becomes 5th Duke player to bolt for NBA (AP; Beard)

Duke freshman A.J. Griffin is heading to the NBA, becoming the fifth Blue Devils player in the past week to declare early for the draft.

The school announced Griffin’s decision Sunday, the last day for players to declare themselves eligible for the NBA draft. Duke said the 6-foot-6, 222-pound wing regarded as a potential lottery draft pick plans to hire an agent.

“It was a dream come true,” Griffin said in a statement. “My experiences have helped prepare me for this moment and I am proud to know I will be a Blue Devil for life.”

Griffin’s NBA move follows that of 7-1 sophomore Mark Williams, 6-10 star freshman Paolo Banchero, 6-5 wing Wendell Moore Jr. and 6-5 guard Trevor Keels. Part of one of the nation’s top recruiting classes out of Ossining, New York, Griffin is ranked as ESPN’s No. 8 draft prospect.

He averaged 10.4 points while providing size, outside shooting and defensive potential to the wing for the Blue Devils. That production came despite him missing most of his last two high school seasons because of knee and ankle injuries, as well as a preseason knee injury that slowed his process of getting back in rhythm after extended absences.

Joe Bright, owner of Dunk & Bright Furniture, stands in his new store at the Great Northern Mall in Clay on Thursday, April 21, 2022. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

Big new furniture store gives troubled Great Northern Mall a bright new look (PS; Moriarty)

Dunk & Bright’s huge new furniture store stands out from the rest of the Great Northern Mall, and as far as owner Joe Bright is concerned, that’s definitely a good thing.

Bright opened the 88,000-square-foot store Friday morning in the former Macy’s location at the front of the mall, close to Route 31. The new store is 6,000 square feet larger than his family’s longtime store on South Salina Street in Syracuse, which Bright said makes this new one the largest furniture store in New York.

The store employs 30 people and contains about 2,500 pieces of furniture, 10% more than the Syracuse store, which will remain open. Bright’s great-grandfather, William Bright Sr., and William Dunk Sr. opened the Syracuse store in 1927.

The new store gives the mall, which is mostly empty and temporarily closed twice this year, a bright new look. The entire exterior of the former Macy’s has been repainted bright white with a blue horizontal stripe. And that’s not the only improvements Bright has made.
