In Madrid, 300 self-proclaimed geeks played a game of human Pac-Man together on the day. Rights and responsibilities for geeks were also written up. Six freshmen – Maliq Brown, Chris Bunch, Peter Carey, Quadir Copeland, Judah Mintz and Justin Taylor – have either arrived on campus this past weekend or will be trickling into town soon. They know each other, some from previous AAU or prep school teams, others after either meeting at the Carrier Dome for last winter’s Duke game or from various ping-ponging texts. “It seems like we’ve got a really good group of guys who are all kind of familiar with each other and see the same vision and want to impact our program,” SU assistant coach Gerry McNamara said. Taylor’s tentacles run through every new Orange recruit and began with Benny Williams. Taylor and Williams were once AAU teammates and Williams, now a Syracuse sophomore, alerted the Orange staff about Taylor. Taylor then paid the favor forward. He told SU coaches about his longtime friend and former AAU teammate Maliq Brown, who eventually agreed to play for Syracuse, too. Taylor and Benny Williams were once AAU teammates with Judah Mintz, SU’s most recent freshman signee. Taylor, too, played a final season of high school basketball at IMG Academy with Copeland. And he met Bunch and Carey in Syracuse for the Duke game last winter, when Mintz was on campus for a visit. Four of SU’s freshmen reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia (the DMV). SU professor Thom Miller was part of the original workshop of the musical “Fly More Than You Fall,” the story of a father and daughter coping with a wife and mother’s terminal illness. The workshop took place in the drama department at SU. Miller, who played the lead role of the dad in the workshop, reprised his role in a production in Utah. That’s when it caught the attention of his friend and former boss, Broadway producer Marc David Levine (‘Mr. Saturday Night’, ‘Tina: The Tina Turner Musical’). One day in 2019, Levine saw a Facebook post from Miller about his role as the dad at the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts on the Utah[URL='http://utba.tempurl.host/tag/Utah-Valley-University'] Valley University[/URL] campus. So Levine went to see the show. “I thought… I haven’t seen Thom in years. He was such a great guy,” Levine said. “I’m gonna fly to Utah to see him in this show.” ‘Fly More Than You Fall’ was based on a book by Eric Holmes, and has lyrics by Holmes and Nat Zegree.
