Welcome to National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day celebrates mixed breed dogs, and was created by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate, who also created days such as National Dog Day, National Puppy Day, and National Cat Day. The goal of the day is to embrace, save, and celebrate mixed breed dogs by creating awareness about the great numbers of them in animal shelters that are in need of a home. Mixed breed dogs make up the largest percentage of dogs that are abandoned and euthanized, and make up about 80% of dogs in shelters. In an effort to further raise awareness, National Mutt Day takes place on two days during the year. The hoped for result of the day is that people visit animal shelters and adopt a mixed breed dog, or possibly donate their time and money to shelters.

After 3-straight losses, SU basketball gets grizzled Notre Dame and Starling (what to know) (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse has lost its last three games and things won’t get any easier for the Orange as it faces Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday.

The Orange is 3-4 for the first time in Jim Boeheim’s 47-year coaching tenure after back-to-back-to-back losses to St. John’s, Bryant and Illinois.

Syracuse suffered an offensive collapse in its 73-44 loss at Illinois on Tuesday. The Orange made just 27% (15-of-54) of its field-goal attempts, including a 5-for-17 performance from 3-point range.

Joe Girard’s recent slump continued. The senior guard failed to score, took only three shots and played just 20 minutes. He has spent the last three games scoring in single-digits.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame (6-1) is coming off a convincing 70-52 win over 20th-ranked Michigan State on Wednesday. Syracuse is playing away from home for the fourth time in its first eight games, but this will be Notre Dame’s seventh home game of the year. The Irish’s only loss was to St. Bonaventure, 63-51, on a neutral court. Notre Dame is 20-1 at home over the past two seasons.

The Syracuse-Notre Dame game is scheduled to start at noon and will be televised on ESPN2.

Here are five key things to know about the matchup:

SU basketball’s cold November reign: Record losses, fewest points (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

I had several questions answered and ready to go for this week’s Mailbox, but then Syracuse lost 73-44 to Illinois on Tuesday night.

Following the Orange’s lackluster performance in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, I received several questions that I thought deserved immediate attention.

So let’s get to them.

As always, if you have any college basketball-related questions, please email to mwaters@syracuse.com.

Q: When was the last time Syracuse had four losses before December 1?

Richard S.

Mike:
The Syracuse Orange is currently 3-4 as the calendar turns to December. You already knew that.

But did you know the 3-4 record represents a first in the program’s history?

To get right to the point of Richard’s question, Syracuse has never lost four games prior to the start of December.

Syracuse played just six games in November prior to the Jim Boeheim taking over the program in the 1976-77 season. But the Orange has played at least once November game in all but two of the seasons since then.

Syracuse didn’t play as many as four games in November until the 1987-88 season.

But Syracuse has played at least six November games every year since 2005-06. From 2009 to 2016, Syracuse had a November record of 50-1.

Syracuse’s most November losses have come in three of the past four seasons. In 2019-20, Syracuse was 4-3 on Dec. 1 and last year the Orange was also 4-3 after a Nov. 30 win over Indiana.

Syracuse men’s basketball: are there solutions for fixing the Orange offense? (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange were expected to take a step back on the offensive end in 2022. Losing Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim along with Cole Swider took away a lot of last year’s scoring.

So far this season, Syracuse is struggling to create easy opportunities for themselves. It’s not just one area that is struggling. Here are some of the offensive numbers and where Syracuse ranks in D1 this season:

  • FG %: 42.9% (250th)
  • 2-pt FG %: 47.3% (292nd)
  • 3-pt FG %: 32.5% (234th)
  • 3-pt makes per game: 5.9 (301st)
  • Assists per game: 12.1 (264th)
  • Points per game: 70.4 (229th)
So how does Jim Boeheim and his staff fix this? Here’s a couple of suggestions:

Apply Pressure

I’m not talking “40 Minutes of Hell” here but when Jesse Edwards goes to the bench, Syracuse needs to ramp up the pressure. Look at the roster. A five from the group of Judah/Symir/Benny/Bell/Taylor/Copeland/Brown/JBA/Hima has size and length and with Hima as the last man, a lethal rim protector. Syracuse can speed up the game and look to create easy baskets off turnovers, especially when they have a group of non-scorers on the floor. There is enough depth to use pressure in spots to get opponents out of rhythm.

What to watch for: Syracuse v. Notre Dame - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Coming off a disappointing 73-44 loss to Illinois on Tuesday, the Orange will open ACC play when it travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Saturday at 12 p.m. (TV: ESPN2). Here are five things to watch for in the matchup.

Can Joe Girard snap out of it?

This is a repeat topic from the ‘What to Watch For Against Illinois’ from earlier in the week. For the third straight game, Joe Girard struggled, going 0-3 in 20 minutes of play for 0 points. That comes off his previous two games against Bryant and St. John’s where Girard scored a combined 9 points on 2-22 shooting. Going 2 for you last 25 isn’t going to get it done when you’re a senior lead, and Girard will need to find a way out of his shooting slump if Syracuse is going to get back into the win category.

Can Judah Mintz snap out of it?

While Girard has drawn more deadlines for his struggles, freshman point guard Judah Mintz has struggled over his last two games as well. He was 3-16 against Illinois for nine points. That comes after a 2-7 performance against Bryant before he was ejected during a skirmish against the Bulldogs. The coaching staff should be in Mintz’s ear about being more of a distributor when he’s struggling to score. Though Mintz had five assists, he also had four turnovers against the Illini.

Can Jesse Edwards stay out of foul trouble?

For the second straight game, Jesse Edwards fouled out after a sterling performance. Edwards hauled in 17 rebounds in the loss to Illinois, but only played 33 minutes because of foul trouble. Edwards needs to be more careful if he wants to play more minutes. The good news it that Syracuse got quality minutes from backup Mounir Hima, who scored 4 points and had 4 rebounds in 4 minutes against Illinois.

Syracuse Basketball: Sorry Coach B, this isn’t an NCAA tourney team (yet) (itlh; Adler)

Prior to the 2022-23 campaign getting underway, Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim said of his current roster in an interview with Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, “We’re going to be in the NCAA Tournament. … This is the best team we’ve had in a while.”

To be fair, the 2022-23 stanza is only seven games deep, with the Orange heading to Notre Dame this Saturday afternoon to commence its Atlantic Coast Conference play.

However, at this juncture in the current term, the ‘Cuse is a disappointing 3-4. The team has lost three in a row – to St. John’s in overtime at the 2022 Empire Classic in New York City, to Bryant on the Hill by one point on a last-second shot, and this past Tuesday night to No. 16 Illinois, 73-44, in the final ACC-Big Ten Challenge contest for Syracuse basketball.

The ‘Cuse, by the way, finished at 4-6 overall in this annual event. Meanwhile, Notre Dame (6-1) pounded No. 20 Michigan State on Wednesday evening in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and the Fighting Irish will prove tough to knock off on its own turf. As such, the Orange is staring at the possibility of being 3-5 through eight games in 2022-23.

There’s time for Syracuse basketball to turn things around, but the ‘Cuse has much work to do.

Boeheim saying in the preseason that he believes the Orange will make the 2023 Big Dance is understandable. First of all, he suffered his first losing campaign as the team’s head coach in 2021-22, and the ‘Cuse had seen its roster vastly revamped prior to 2022-23 commencing.

The present line-up features a lot of depth, a lot of promise, a lot of young guys, and a whole host of question marks. It is not, at this point in 2022-23, even close to an NCAA Tournament-caliber group.

THE SCORER'S TABLE: Lakers F Cole Swider on Syracuse Basketball, Jim Boeheim & LeBron James stories

Live at 10 AM EST Friday. Cole Swider talks about playing for Jim Boeheim and playing with Lebron James.

What Is Wrong With The Syracuse Men's Basketball Team Right Now? (1045theteam.com; Wyland)

It has not been a good start to the season for the Syracuse men's basketball team. They currently sit at 3-4 overall and just lost a game by 29 points to Illinois out of the Big 10 conference on Tuesday night. Syracuse plays in the ACC and should never be losing by 29 points. Jim Boeheim is coming off of one of his very few losing seasons ever at Syracuse. It is crazy to think he is now in year 44 as the head coach of the Orange. He has had a tremendous career as their head coach but this season will be a struggle. I continue this discussion in my quick take from The Times Union:

It’s going to be a long season for the Syracuse men’s basketball team. Unless something drastically changes, Syracuse will struggle because they can’t consistently score the basketball. You’re not beating a quality opponent like Illinois when Joseph Girard III plays only 20 minutes and doesn’t score. JGIII only took three shots and only one three pointer against the Illini. The Glens Falls grad is a scorer and still gives SU it’s best chance to win games this season. The roster has plenty of holes, but Girard has to make threes because I don’t see who else is going to produce the points from the behind the arc. Let’s face it, to win these days, you have knock down shots from long range.

The Clay Fire Department is hoping to conduct controlled burns of homes on Burnet Road as training exercises for volunteer firefighters. The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency plans to demolish homes on the road to make room for Micron Technology Inc.'s planned $100 billion semiconductor plant. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

Firefighters want to burn vacant homes on Micron’s future site in Clay (PS; $; Moriarty)

Some of the 38 homes at the site of Micron Technology’s future $100 billion semiconductor factory in Clay may end up being burned to the ground.

The Clay Fire Department has asked for permission to burn some of the homes on Burnet Road as a training exercise for its 35 volunteer firefighters. Onondaga County officials, who are making plans to demolish the homes to clear the land for Micron, say they are open to letting firefighters burn some of them.

Clay Fire Chief Michael Redhead said seven other volunteer fire departments, mostly in Syracuse’s northern suburbs, have also expressed an interest in conducting “controlled burns” and other training exercises in some of the homes.

The Clay Fire Department built a training tower 20 years behind its Station 1 on Route 31. It sets hay and wooden pallets on fire in a room in the tower so firefighters can practice extinguishing the flames.

However, Redhead said burning a house provides much more realistic training because it allows firefighters to see how smoke and flames spread through a real home and gives them a chance to not only practice putting a fire out, but also conducting search and rescue operations in a structure they are not familiar with.

“We can watch the smoke travel through different rooms and kind of, you know, just watch the fire grow and let them see the way fire travels,” he said. “It’s educational. We’re not looking to get up there and burn houses to cause a lot of chaos.”

Even after a home is burned, it is useful for training purposes because new fire investigators learning how to determine the cause and origin of fires can go through them and employ what they have learned in a classroom, he said.

“I’d like each fire department to have their own house to be able to do what they wish to do with it,” said Redhead.

The opportunity to burn a real home does not come along very often, he said. The last time the Clay department got the chance to burn a home was about 12 years ago, he said.

“It could be another 20 years or we might never get another opportunity like this,” he said.

OK, this is really damning.
