Welcome to National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day!
On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Naval Station Pearl Harbor, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day remembers and honors the 2,403 citizens of the United States who lost their lives there that day. Veterans and citizens have commemorated the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor since it took place, but the day became an official observance when Congress designated the day with a joint resolution on October 3, 1984. The resolution authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States "to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities" and "to pledge eternal vigilance and strong resolve to defend this Nation and its allies from all future aggression." Accordingly, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5286 on December 4, 1984. Subsequent Congresses and presidents have passed resolutions and issued proclamations for the day. On the day, flags are flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died from the attacks. Events, including a commemoration ceremony, are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Easy money: SU basketball blows out Oakland (Brent Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)
The Syracuse University men’s basketball team got some needed stress relief in cruising to a 95-66 win over Oakland on Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Orange put the Grizzlies into hibernation with an 18-0 run to close the first half, holding Oakland scoreless for over six minutes.
Syracuse shot 58.3 percent (42-of-72) against Oakland. SU’s 95 points were a season-high as were its 23 assists.
SU welcomed a routine day at the office to start a six-game home stand after two overtime games in New York, a buzzer-beating loss against Bryant, a blowout loss at Illinois and a tight win in South Bend against Notre Dame.
The stress level will rise again with Georgetown coming to town on Saturday (check your watches, SU fans) to revive a rivalry.
The Orange and Hoyas have split the last four match-ups. None of the last eight games between the old Big East foes has been decided by more than 10 points.

Mintz got an exercise in recognizing defenses in win vs. Oakland (PS; $; Waters)
It might have seemed like Syracuse had all the answers in its 95-66 demolition of Oakland on Tuesday night.
But Syracuse point guard Judah Mintz missed one part of a multiple-choice question in the 95-66 blowout victory at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Oakland coach Greg Kampe used at least four different defenses in just the first half of Tuesday’s game.
As the point guard, it’s Mintz’s job to identify the opposing team’s defense and get the Orange into the proper offensive set.
Mintz aced the test, scoring 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting while also handing out five assists with zero turnovers.
“You definitely have to recognize what they’re in,’’ Mintz said. “It was a couple times we came down and we didn’t know what they were running, but we figured it out. It’s definitely good to see defenses like that.’’
So how many defenses did Oakland employ? At least four.
Mintz was ready for the first thanks to some film study.
“They were in like a matchup 1-3-1,’’ Mintz said. “We watched film on it. We knew we would be able to pick it apart.’’
He knew the next two as well.
“They ran a man,’’ he said, “and then they were in a 2-3 matchup, too.’’
However, a trick question — or trick defense — confused Mintz.
For several possessions in the first half, Oakland went to a triangle-and-two defense, something Kampe said the Grizzlies hadn’t used all season.
“I didn’t even see the triangle,’’ Mintz said with a grin.
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim gave Mintz a solid grade and noted his improvement through just nine games.
“I thought he recognized the defenses pretty well tonight,’’ Boeheim said. “When he could drive, he got to the basket. He’s learning.

Five Takeaways: Syracuse 95 Oakland 66 (SI; McAllister)
Syracuse basketball won its second straight game, blowing out Oakland 95-66 Tuesday night inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Here are five takeaways from the victory.
1. Girard Continues Shooting Well
The shooting slump is now well in the rearview mirror for Joe Girard. He had another strong shooting game against Oakland. After going 9-18 and scoring 20 points against Notre Dame, Girard had 18 points in just 23 minutes of action on 7-10 shooting including 4-7 from beyond the arc. He also dished out six assists. With this Joe Girard, Syracuse can be a good offensive basketball team. Without him, it will be a struggle on that end. It is good for Syracuse that he has turned this around, and also shows the mental toughness he possesses.
2. Better Effort on the Boards
Syracuse won the rebounding battle 44-33, but held an 18 rebound advantage before the walk-ons came in. The Orange controlled the glass all night and was a much needed effort in that area after the performance at Notre Dame. It was not all Jesse Edwards either, though he did snag seven in 23 minutes. Benny Williams grabbed five, Maliq Brown had four, Justin Taylor had four, John Bol Ajak had five. It was encouraging to see multiple guys putting that effort in. It needs to continue.

Three takeaways from Syracuse basketball’s 95-66 win over Oakland (TNIAAM; Szuba)
If the previous five games proved to be difficult, the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team received a bit of a respite at home against the Oakland Grizzlies on Tuesday night. In what marked the beginning of a six-game homestand, Syracuse handled Oakland 95-66 as college basketball’s two longest tenured head coaches squared off.
The Syracuse seniors paced the offense once more as Jesse Edwards and Joe Girard got going early. Although Oakland was denying Edwards and made entry feeds difficult, Syracuse was still able to find him down low for easy buckets. The game was nip and tuck for the first 14 minutes, but Syracuse ended the half on an 18-0 run to take a 45-24 lead at the break as a Judah Mintz transition lay fell just before the halftime buzzer.
Syracuse pushed the lead to 30 early in the second half—and as much as 42—before Jim Boeheim turned to his bench. Oakland was never able to make it a game. All in all, five Orange players finished with double-figures and Syracuse out-rebounded Oakland 44-33. Syracuse had a season-high 27 assists on 42 made shots. The Orange won the battle in the paint 58-38.

Syracuse knocks out Oakland in first half, coasts to 29-point win - The Juice Online (The Juice; Stechschulte)
Syracuse finally got what had been missing on the season until Tuesday night: a true laugher of a game, as they led by as many as 42 points in a 95-66 manhandling of Oakland. The Orange (5-4) outscored the Golden Grizzlies (2-9), 25-4, in the last ten-and-a-half minutes of the first half, including posting the last 18 points of the session to blow the game open.
SU shot 58.3 percent from the field from the game, a mark that was marred by the last seven attempts of the game missing the mark after walk-ons entered the fray. Jesse Edwards and Joe Girard III led the way with 18 points in 23 minutes apiece. Edwards made all nine of his field goal attempts in the game while Girard was 7-of-10, including four three-pointers, while handing out six assists. Maliq Brown (12 points on 6-of-7 shooting), Symir Torrence (12 points on 5-of-6 shooting), and Judah Mintz (ten points) were also in double figures.
While Oakland struggled on offense, shooting just 37.5 percent from the field and 20 percent from behind the arc, Trey Townsend had a monstrous game, posting 29 points and 13 rebounds. Jalen Moore added a dozen points while Keaton Hervey and Rocket Watts each had eight.
A little over five minutes into the game, the Golden Grizzlies ran off seven straight points to grab a 15-13 lead. The next seven baskets in the game caused lead changes, but the last of those was a Benny Williams jumper that started a run of seven straight points for Syracuse.

Syracuse Basketball: Per analysts, 5-star PG has option to join 2023 class (itlh; Adler)
I’ve come across several reports from national recruiting analysts lately that speak to the option being there for Syracuse basketball priority recruiting target Elliot Cadeau to reclassify from the 2024 cycle to the 2023 class.
I am curious as to whether the Orange might have a better shot at landing this five-star point guard if the 6-foot-1 Cadeau stays in the 2024 class or moves up to the 2023 cycle.
Not too long ago, Cadeau, a top-10 national prospect in the 2024 class per multiple recruiting services, included Syracuse basketball in his top six, along with North Carolina, Louisville, Texas Tech, Kansas and Texas.
I’m anxious to see if the ‘Cuse can get Cadeau onto the Orange campus for an official visit in the near future. Personally, I don’t think that he will end up picking Syracuse basketball if he doesn’t ultimately make a trip to the ‘Cuse.
At this juncture, I’m not aware of the ‘Cuse presently targeting any 2023 guards. And if we look ahead to the 2023-24 campaign, Syracuse basketball would have several scholarships available should Cadeau reclassify into the 2023 cycle and want to come to Central New York.
Cadeau, who has been contacted by businessman Adam Weitsman about his potentially lucrative name, image and likeness opportunities, is an elite high-school player.
He attends the powerhouse Link Academy in Branson, Mo., a group that is expected to significantly compete for a national championship during the 2022-23 term.
As far as the Orange’s potential roster for the 2023-24 season, senior guards Joe Girard III and Symir Torrence could return for a fifth stanza on the Hill, but I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that either or both of them will come back.

James Madison vs. Virginia Condensed Game | 2022-23 ACC Men’s Basketball (youtube; video; ACCDN)
The matchup was close the whole way, but Virginia avenged last year’s loss to James Madison with a home win, 55-50 to move to 8-0. It was a patented defensive performance for the Hoos, who held the Dukes to 27% shooting. Kihei Clark led Virginia offensively, putting up 18 points and 7 assists. Jayden Gardner had 14 points and 8 rebounds to go with 2 blocks and 2 steals.
Georgia vs. Georgia Tech Condensed Game | 2022-23 ACC Men’s Basketball (youtube; video; ACCDN)
Georgia Tech eked out a close win at home over rival Georgia 79-77 thanks in part to some clutch late defense that fueled a 6-0 spurt in the final minute. Miles Kelly led the Jackets in scoring with 17 points; he’d also add 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Ja’von Franklin contributed 13 points and 9 rebounds for Tech.
New Hampshire vs. Boston College Condensed Game | 2022-23 ACC Men’s Basketball (youtube; video; ACCDN)
In what was a close, back-and-forth game throughout, New Hampshire got the better of Boston College in overtime, 74-71. Jaeden Zackery was BC’s leading scorer with 14 points in a tough, 44-minute effort. TJ Bickerstaff had 9 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. For New Hampshire, Clarence Daniels had a career game, scoring 34 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

ACC Team of the Week : Pittsburgh – for 2-0 record winning at Northwestern and NC State
Could Louisville be the worst ACC team we’ve seen this century? There are TWO teams with a worse NET ranking. TWO!
Florida State is the ACC’s worst nightmare. Everything about their resume is dreadful, but they are playing well enough to pull an upset along the way.
Boston College is the only team to beat Cornell. I guess that’s something.
Georgia Tech has won back to back games including rival Georgia with a nice late comeback.
Syracuse has been awful this year, but they weren’t at Notre Dame. Let’s see if they can build on it.
Notre Dame crushed a depleted Michigan State team, but losing to Syracuse at home gave it all back.
Where did Pitt come up with great performances at Northwestern and NC State? Their 5 game winning streak could easily grow with Vanderbilt and Sacred Heart this week.
Wake Forest’s win at Wisconsin is going to resonate all year, but backing it up with a win Clemson proved too much. A game with 7-1 LSU Saturday is big.
Clemson is suddenly a team to watch after this past week beating Penn State and Wake Forest.
North Carolina doesn’t have to hit the panic button, but we’re getting close. The chemistry of this talented team is all messed up right now.
NC State was just cruising along until they hit red-hot Pittsburgh at home… not good.
Virginia Tech had a great home week knocking off Minnesota and UNC. Dayton and Oklahoma State are games the Hokies need to aid that OOC resume.
The Canes just have the one blemish against Maryland on their resume. I like their chances to be 11-1 before they play VIrginia in a couple of weeks.
Duke is a team that is starting to grow up. If I am right, they’ll beat a good Iowa team this week, and I was.
Virginia struggled a bit with FSU, but make no mistake the Hoos are as good as anyone in college basketball. James Madison was a test this week.
Notre Dame Men's Basketball Looks To Bounce Back Against Boston (SI; Stires)
It has been an up and down last three games for Mike Brey’s Notre Dame men’s basketball team. The Fighting Irish suffered their first loss of the season to St. Bonaventure Thanksgiving weekend, but followed that five days later with a 70-52 trouncing of then No. 20 Michigan State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, only to lose 62-61 last Saturday to a Syracuse team that had lost three straight entering the game.
Where: Notre Dame, Ind – Purcell Pavilion
When: Wednesday, Dec. 7 – 7:00 PM EST
Network: ACC Network Extra
Radio: Notre Dame Radio Network – WSBT 960 AM in South Bend, Tony Simeone PBP
Let's take a look at today’s matchup:
NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (6-2, 0-1 ACC)
Head Coach: Mike Brey (478-261 at Notre Dame (23rd season), 577-313 28th season overall)
Notre Dame looked like it had found some much needed momentum in the young season with the win over Michigan State, but the ever-present Syracuse zone yanked that away in last Saturday’s home defeat. The Irish could never get comfortable offensively. They made 11 three-pointers, but they needed 33 attempts to do it, while hitting just 23 of 60 (38%) from the field overall.
Dane Goodwin and Cormac Ryan combined for seven 3-pointers in the loss, scoring 16 and 14 points, respectively.
At the defensive end, Notre Dame’s biggest weakness was attacked early and often by Orange big man Jesse Edwards. The 6-11 center was 10 of 15 for 22 points, while also pulling down 14 rebounds (both game-highs).

Last Week: 1Virginia struggled a bit with FSU, but make no mistake the Hoos are as good as anyone in college basketball.
