Poinsettia Day celebrates the beautiful red flowering plant that has come to be associated with Christmas, the poinsettia. The plant is native to Mexico, where it was used by the Aztecs; its flowers were used to produce red dye, and its sap to treat fevers. Franciscan missionaries in Mexico used it in the 17th century as part of nativity processions, the first time it became associated with Christianity. A story has been passed down about a poor Mexican girl who didn't have anything to honor baby Jesus with at a procession. An angel told her any gift from the heart was a good gift, so she gathered weeds from the roadside. When she placed them around the manger they transformed into poinsettias. In Mexico the flowers are called La Flores de la Nochebuena, or the Flowers of the Holy Night, and are displayed on December 12, the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This day marks the beginning of the Christmas season.

SU playing some of its best basketball, and now gets slumping Monmouth (PS; Waters)
Just two days after dispatching rival Georgetown, the Syracuse Orange will return to the court at the JMA Wireless Dome to host the Monmouth Hawks on Monday.
Syracuse has improved its record to 6-4 with three-consecutive victories. Syracuse continues to rely on its Big Three of Jesse Edwards, Joe Girard and Judah Mintz, along with increased contributions from role players like John Bol Ajak, Benny Williams and Symir Torrence.
Monmouth, meanwhile, has struggled thus far this season. The Hawks are 1-9 on the season. Their only win came against Manhattan. Their nine losses have been by an average of 24.5 points. Only two losses have been by less than 10 points ― a five-point loss to Norfolk State and a four-point loss to Lehigh.
The Syracuse-Monmouth game was originally scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but the tipoff has been pushed back to 8 p.m.
Syracuse’s men’s soccer team is playing in the NCAA championship game, which starts at 6 p.m. on Monday. The Dome’s doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to allow fans to come early and watch the soccer game on the video screens. Fans can purchase special tickets for $10 to watch the soccer game and stay for the basketball game.
The basketball game will still be televised on the ACC Network.

Why Monmouth basketball's 1-9 start is unsettling; plus 5 keys vs. Syracuse (app.com; Edelson)
Let’s forget the games against high-majors, of which tonight’s at Syracuse (7 p.m./ACC Network) will be Monmouth’s fourth of the season. Those have the potential to go badly even for top Monmouth teams over the years.
The unsettling losses are the ones that hit closest to home – literally.
Saturday night’s game at Princeton was the 22nd time the two Central Jersey rivals have met since then Monmouth coach Wayne Szoke, a former Pete Carrill assistant, set up the first meeting in 1991.
It’s been a great series ever since. When Princeton knocked defending national champion UCLA out of the 1996 NCAA Tournament, Monmouth had beaten the Tigers during the regular season. During the Hawks’ 12-game winless streak to open the 2018-19 season, it dropped a one-possession decision to Princeton.
But the 91-54 loss at at Jadwin Gym was the most lopsided result in the series. Cairn University, a Division 3 program, only lost to Princeton by 34 points 10 days earlier.
Then there’s Rider, a staple of Monmouth’s schedule over the past four decades. None of the previous 59 meetings had been decided by more than 21 points. But the Broncs hammered the Hawks by 36 points on Nov. 30.
This young group may well develop into a good team. But right now they’re struggling like few Monmouth teams ever have.
None of this is the fault of the players, mind you. Coach King Rice set the incredibly difficult schedule and thought they could survive with this roster, which has been a serious miscalculation, with signs of development tough to spot. Combine that with the inability to land an experienced player and/or scorer via the NCAA transfer portal, along with some injuries, and you have a recipe for a 1-9 start.
Three tough non-conference games remain, before they get into their first Colonial Athletic Association season. There’s a chance they won’t be favored in a game the rest of the season.

Hoyas Handled: SU basketball defeats Georgetown (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)
The fusion of the past and the present is impossible to ignore when Syracuse and Georgetown get together.
Saturday’s 83-64 win by the Orange over the Hoyas at the JMA Wireless Dome reminded us why.
Jim Boeheim and Pearl Washington were formally inducted into Syracuse’s Ring of Honor.
Opponent Preview: What to know about 1-9 Monmouth (DO; Alandt)
After a slow start against Georgetown, a run at the end of the first half sealed a third-straight win for Syracuse. Jesse Edwards finished with a double-double for the fourth time this season, and Judah Mintz dished out a game-high 10 assists in what proved to be a 19-point win over Georgetown. Now, after three-straight losses, the Orange look to Monmouth to be their fourth-straight win and to move two games over .500 in nonconference play.
The Hawks are in the midst of their worst start since 2019, having lost all but one of their first 10 games. Two games ago, they notched their sole win of the season with a 76-69 win over Manhattan, then most recently fell by 37 points to Princeton on Saturday. They have one of the worst offenses in the game and are only 60% or higher in opponent steal percentage. Led by junior Myles Foster, Monmouth, under 12th-year head coach King Rice, is averaging just 61.5 points per game and has a scoring margin of -21.4 throughout its historically poor start.
Here’s everything you need to know about Monmouth before it squares off with Syracuse:

Syracuse leads 2-0....
Jim Boeheim is formally recognized as a member of the Syracuse University Athletics Ring of Honor during halftime against the Georgetown Hoyas at the JMA Wireless Dome, Syracuse, N.Y. Saturday December 10, 2022. Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.
Boeheim even took time to address the crowd at halftime, joking he almost didn’t come out there based on how his team started the game.
Boeheim offered a heartfelt message to Syracuse fans, calling the place he came to at 17 from nearby Lyons, New York, “the best place to live.”
Boeheim spoke fondly of Pearl, saying he was “the most exciting player I’ve ever seen and you’ve ever seen,” and ain’t that the truth.
Patrick Ewing strolled the sideline as Georgetown’s head coach. If you listened hard enough, you could still hear the thud of oranges hitting the backboard when he stepped to the free-throw line once upon a time.

Syracuse basketball versus Monmouth odds, prediction and how to watch (itlh; Adler)
Following its thumping of storied rival Georgetown at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon, Syracuse basketball has won three in a row, and the Orange will look to make it four-straight triumphs when the ‘Cuse hosts Colonial Athletic Association member Monmouth on Monday night.
It’s a quick turnaround for Syracuse basketball (6-4) as the Orange is set for a non-conference clash with the struggling Hawks (1-9). The ‘Cuse did a lot of positive things in its 83-64 destruction of the Hoyas, and I assume that Syracuse basketball players are feeling confident these days after recently enduring a three-contest setback streak.
All along, Orange head coach Jim Boeheim has said that it would take some time for his young roster to come together as a cohesive unit in the 2022-23 campaign, and I get it. Of its 12 scholarship players, eight ‘Cuse guys are underclassmen.
Now, the recent losses to St. John’s, Bryant and Illinois, along with a prior setback to Colgate, still sting, but Syracuse basketball has managed to rattle off consecutive wins at Notre Dame, at home against Oakland and then versus the Hoyas on the Hill.
Beginning with Monmouth, the Orange has four home dates in a row before the calendar year hits 2023, with the other opponents being Cornell, Pittsburgh and Boston College. If the ‘Cuse can get to 10-4 heading into 2023, that would prove huge for this young team.

On a roll, Syracuse faces 1-win Monmouth squad (yahoo.com; FLM)
If nothing else, Syracuse has displayed plenty of resiliency this season.
The Orange look to post their fourth straight win Monday when they host Monmouth for a nonconference affair.
Syracuse (6-4) recently lost three straight, including a home defeat to Bryant and a 29-point setback to then-No. 16 Illinois. However, coach Jim Boeheim's team has since recovered to nip Notre Dame by one point on the road before rolling over Oakland and Georgetown by a combined 48 points.
"We played really well," Boeheim said after Saturday's win over the Hoyas in the 98th meeting between the former Big East rivals. "We made a couple bad fouls in the second half that we've got to avoid, but overall we did the things you have to do to win.
"There's still a certain amount of feeling with Georgetown. That'll carry on. It's not obviously what it was, but it's still Georgetown. It's still a big game, especially for me. I don't know about these guys, but for me it is."

Tech Drops ACC Opener at North Carolina, 75-59 (ramblinwreck.com)
Georgia Tech’s sophomore trio of Miles Kelly, Jalon Moore and Deebo Coleman combined for 43 of Georgia Tech’s points, but the Yellow Jackets could not overcome a major disadvantage in size and rebounding Saturday and fell, 75-59, to North Carolina at the Dean Smith Center.
Tech (6-4, 0-1 in the ACC) was beaten 43-22 on the glass and was able to secure just one offensive rebound against the Tar Heels (6-4, 1-1 ACC), who scored 36 of their points in the paint and shot 47.4 percent from the floor.
Kelly and Moore scored 15 points each to lead the Yellow Jackets, while Coleman added 13. They combined to hit 16-of-29 shots from the floor and 7-of-15 from three-point range. The rest of the team managed to connect on just 6-of-25 from the floor and 2-of-11 on threes. Tech’s nine threes and 26 attempts were both season highs.
Tech kept pace with the Tar Heels in the first 15 minutes of the game behind its three-point shooting, hitting 5-of-13 from behind the arc. Deebo Coleman and Miles Kelly made two each from long range, and Terry knocked in another. But after Terry’s shot that gave the Yellow Jackets a 24-23 lead, Tech made only one basket the rest of the half and the Tar Heels reeled off 11 straight points to end the period and take a 39-26 lead into the locker room.
Despite shooting 50 percent after intermission, the Yellow Jackets could not cut into the Tar Heel lead and fell behind by as many as 20 points late in the game.
R.J. Davis led North Carolina with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Armando Bacot returned from a one-game injury absence to score 21 points with 13 boards. Pete Nance added 13 points and Caleb Love 10 for the Tar Heels.
Tech returns to the court next Saturday, Dec. 17, for its next game, a 2 p.m. tip against Alabama State at McCamish Pavilion. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and ESPN+.

Where is Upstate New York?
It’s possibly the argument Upstate New Yorkers love the most, next to who gets the most snow. Ask 10 different people where Upstate New York is and you’re bound to get 10 different answers they will assure you is the correct one.
This never-ending discussion has flared up through the years. In regards to local geography wars, a New York magazine reporter may have said it best when they wrote, “‘Upstate’ means whatever you want it to mean, and everyone else insists that you’re wrong.”
Actor and former candidate for governor of New York, Cynthia Nixon, said Upstate New York started around Ithaca during an interview in 2018, which caused a flurry of debate.
During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the Upstate NY discourse was stirred up again after social media users were left confused after hearing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo announce Central New York could begin to reopen in one of his daily briefings.
“So what is ‘Central New York?’ Because as far as I know there’s NYC, LI and Upstate,” one person wrote on Twitter.
