Chris Charles Matalas (August 2, 1945 - October 5, 2016), aka CaliCuse, was a long time member of the board. He was known for his extremely enthusiastic, positive outlook on live and Syracuse athletics and became a beloved fixture on the syracusefan.com web site.
One of his favorite things to do was to find a thread that had been dormant for years, and bump it. This sometimes caused confusion, irritation and often amusement among the rest of the board.
For your great enthusiasm and positive outlook, this day is for you Cali.
If you want to celebrate, find an old Cali post and bump it today. RIP Cali, you are gone now but we will never forget you...

John Bol Ajak was asked late Monday night to estimate how many times Jim Boeheim invokes the word “rebounding” with his Syracuse basketball team.
“Oh, every other sentence,” he said. “Rebound! John! John! Rebound! And that’s with everybody.”
Boeheim on Monday night was not pleased with his team’s overall rebounding in SU’s 86-71 defeat of Monmouth. It’s been a theme all season. Syracuse outrebounded the Blue Hawks, a team whose tallest starter was 6-foot-9, by a mere 33-28.
Jesse Edwards gathered his typical haul of missed shots (10). Edwards has carried the Orange on the glass all season. Boeheim has begged his forwards in his postgame remarks (and apparently in private) to help their big man on the backboards.
Once again, the SU coach directed postgame rebounding comments at Chris Bell. The 6-foot-7 freshman did not grab a rebound in his 12 minutes of playing time. He is averaging 1.1 rebounds per game.
And his playing time now appears to be in jeopardy.
“Chris had zero rebounds, which is nothing new,” Boeheim said. “And I can’t play somebody that can’t get a rebound in the game. I just can’t do it. We can’t win that way. So we’re going to have to think about that and think about what we’re going to do going forward.”

At its best, Syracuse’s defense stood tall when cornering Monmouth’s guards against the baseline, drawing one of 14 turnovers, locking down one of the most inexperienced teams in the country. At its worst, it stood still.
With 2:45 left in the first half, the Orange sat in a position they neve thought they’d be in Monday night — down three points to the Hawks and looking down the barrel of another possible upset. They were in the midst of allowing a 56.7% shooting performance from the field against a team that hardly shot 45% entering the game.
Then, Maliq Brown punched out a pass inside the paint to Tahron Allen, but didn’t chase after the ball as it dribbled up into the hands of Jakari Spence at the top of the key. Spence kicked out to Jack Collins and he overdrew a long 3-pointer. But the long rebound darted past Jesse Edwards and scooted by Joe Girard III at the free throw line. Benny Williams was so out of position that he could hardly reach out to touch Spence when he finally got the ball and pulled up to make a long two-pointer. Head coach Jim Boeheim threw his arms down and started barking at his players as the Orange fell to their largest deficit of the night.
Syracuse managed to come out of halftime with better success. Monmouth was physical down low. Far more than Georgetown and Notre Dame, according to Boeheim. Syracuse could find success against the teams that didn’t push its forwards around. The Orange (7-4, 1-0 Atlantic Coast) ultimately won 86-71 over the Hawks (1-10, 0-0 Colonial Athletic), but played a poor defensive game, allowing one of the worst shooting teams in Division I to finish firing 48.2% from the field.
“We’re not winning playing basketball like this,” Boeheim said. “We have to play some defense. If we played some defense, it would have been a close game, but we would have been up eight or 10. We were lucky to be ahead at halftime.”

Syracuse basketball 5-star PG target off to hot start for nation’s No. 1 team (itlh; Adler)
Elliot Cadeau, a 2024 five-star point guard who has Syracuse basketball in his top six, has put forth some really impressive performances so far in the young 2022-23 season for his prep school.
And his team, the powerhouse Link Academy in Branson, Mo., is off to a 9-0 start in the present term. In the latest top 25 from The HS Circuit released via Twitter, the Link Academy is ranked the No. 1 squad across the country.
This past spring, the Link Academy was the runner-up at the 2022 GEICO Nationals, and the Lions are expected to significantly contend for an invite to the 2023 GEICO Nationals, according to high-school hoops experts.
Should the Link Academy be in a position for a possible national title in 2022-23, the 6-foot-1 Cadeau will undeniably prove a pivotal piece for the Lions.
Syracuse basketball is recruiting five-star point guard Elliot Cadeau hard.
Orange coaches offered a scholarship to Cadeau in November of 2021. At the end of this October, he disclosed a top six of the ‘Cuse, North Carolina, Louisville, Texas Tech, Texas and 2022 national champion Kansas.

College basketball has a problem it has never figured out: things start to get a bit interesting and then the exam period and Christmas force a huge level of disruption. Getting started up again, or at least getting back in a good groove, is not easy.
And that’s at least partly why we see games like Monmouth at Syracuse.
Monmouth, which competes in the Colonial, came in at 1-9 and leaves at 1-10. They’re just not very good.
Coached by former UNC star King Rice (who is assisted by fellow former Heel Brian Reese), the Hawks hung around for about 25 minutes before the Orange began to squeeze them out.
Freshman Judah Mintz, who is averaging 14.1 ppg and 3.9 apg, led the way in this one with 24 points, including hitting 11-12 from the free thrown line. Too early to be sure, but he looks like a solid bet for the ACC All-Rookie team.
Jesse Edwards, who Patrick Ewing somewhat ludicrously compared to himself after the Georgetown-Syracuse game (he’s good but not that good), had 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Orange won their fourth straight.
Syracuse is clearly near the end of the Jim Boeheim era, which has lasted for an astonishing 48 years, since the Carter Administration, and things have not gone well the last few years.
Nonetheless, more than 19,000 Orange fans showed up.
As most older coaches tend to do, Boeheim is fading at the end. But the passion for Syracuse basketball endures. And when he finally does call it a career, the infrastructure for a powerful program will remain and will be reinvented by someone else.
A bit more action on Tuesday as Florida State gets a shot at win #3 as South Carolina Upstate visits, Furman, usually a dangerous team out of the Southern Conference buses up to Raleigh to take on the Pack, the Citadel also departs the Palmetto State for the Triangle, in their case to play UNC and Stonehill makes the relatively short trek to play at Boston College.

Two airports in Upstate New York are among the 30 airports with the most delays in the U.S., according to a recent list from Stacker.
Albany International Airport ranked No. 29 for delays and Buffalo Niagara International Airport ranked No. 27. The list includes a total of 100 airports.
Stacker compiled the list using data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Airports were ranked by on-time performance, referring to flights that weren’t canceled, diverted or delayed for 15 minutes or more. The numbers cover the period from August 2021 to July 2022.
Here’s a look at the numbers for Buffalo and Albany:
