Welcome to Boston Tea Party Day!

There were numerous factors that converged to create an environment that was ripe for an event like the Boston Tea Party to take place, which occurred on today's date in 1773. Some of these included the popularity of tea in the colonies, British debt, acts of Parliament that taxed colonists, the Boston Massacre, and the propping up of a British tea company. The Boston Tea Party can be seen as a tipping point that spurred the revolutionary movement forward, which ultimately allowed for the creation of the United States. It is because of its importance to the formation of the country that we mark Boston Tea Party Day.

SU hasn’t lost to Cornell in more than 50 years, but the Big Red can play (what to know) (PS; $; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange will play its last non-conference game of the regular season on Saturday as it hosts Cornell at the JMA Wireless Dome.

This will be the 127th meeting between Syracuse and Cornell. Syracuse has played more games against Cornell than any other school except for Colgate (174 games).

Cornell’s last win over the Orange came on Dec. 4, 1968. However, Syracuse hadn’t lost to Colgate since 1962 until last season. Cornell has a squad capable of snapping its 41-game losing streak against its Upstate New York rival.

While Syracuse (7-4, 1-0 ACC) has won its last four games, Cornell enters Saturday’s game with a 7-2 record. The Big Red’s losses have come against a pair of ACC teams ― 79-77 to Boston College and 107-105 to Miami.

Cornell boasts an experienced, deep and balanced roster. The Big Red’s starting lineup features four upperclassmen. Eight players average at least 19 minutes per game, and those eight average between 7.6 and 13.9 per game.

The SU-Cornell game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and will be televised on the ACC Network.

Here are five things to know about the matchup:

Red means Go

Usually, red means stop, but not when it comes to the Big Red. Cornell coach Dan Earl has installed a fast-paced offensive style that encourages players to push the ball up the court, waste no time finding a good shot and then taking it.

The Big Red’s average length of possession is 14.7 seconds, which ranks fifth in the country. In terms of adjusted tempo, Cornell is 27th in the country, according to KenPom.com.

Bouncing back: Inside the numbers of SU men's basketball's four-game win streak (cnycentral.com; Hodges)

Syracuse basketball is on a winning streak. Which team you ask? Both of them. The women's basketball program has been nothing but impressive. At 8-2 their two losses have both come on the road to opponents in the Big Ten, a conference known for fielding multiple competitive teams, and their three-game winning streak has them flying high ahead of their ACC opener and a season-long string of tests.

Then there's the men's program, who after losing four of their first seven games, two of which came against "inferior" opponents, have come out on top of four straight ahead of their final non-conference tilt against Cornell. Then comes their own ACC schedule and the chance to earn their way back into the NCAA tournament field.

But what has sparked this recent string of wins, and is is sustainable heading into conference play? Yes, that is as long as the men on the floor put in the work that they need to to make the performance they've had these past four games the norm and not the outlier.

The first and most obvious stat to look at when it comes to wins in general is how much a team is scoring and how efficiently it is being done. In seven wins this season SU is shooting an average of 52% from the field and that number has been the same over these past four games. Some of those games were those were the Orange were abysmal from three-point range, but got enough of their chances to fall from inside the arc to push themselves ahead of their opponent as they crossed the finish line.

What to watch for: Syracuse v. Cornell - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Syracuse goes for its fourth straight win when it hosts Cornell on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome (TV: ACC Network). Ahead of the game, we caught up with our friends over at Ivy Hoops Online to get a scouting report on the Big Red. (Be sure to check out TJO’s Syracuse scouting report for this matchup at Ivy Hoops Online):

The Juice Online: Tell us about Ivy Hoops Online.

Michael Tony: Ivy Hoops Online is a blog that has provided a colorful take on Ivy League basketball since 2011.

TJO: What are the major storylines with Cornell coming into this game?

MT: Cornell entered this season losing three of its top four scorers from 2021-22. No matter. The Big Red haven’t missed a beat in maintaining the uptempo attack they embraced last season, a significant shift under a coach who once dominated the Ivy League playing in the methodical Princeton offense for the Tigers.

Cornell again ranks in KenPom’s top five nationally in shortest average possession length. The Big Red’s offense makes analytically informed choices, eschewing the two-point jumper for higher-quality shots and shooting liberally from deep. Cornell ranks third in the country in two-point field-goal percentage and 17th in ratio of three-point attempts to overall field-goal attempts.

The result has been a 7-2 record, including a solid road win versus Delaware. The Big Red’s two losses were at ACC schools – Boston College and Miami – and both were just two-point defeats. The latter was a wild 107-105 shootout in which the Hurricanes were saved by Isaiah Wong’s 36 points powered by a 5-for-8 showing from beyond the arc.

Cornell was pegged in the Ivy preseason media poll to finish fifth in the conference, but it’s shown it’s capable of finishing at least a couple of slots higher. This is a young team that plays wise beyond its years, a credit to coach Brian Earl.

Cornell Big Red (7-2) at Syracuse Orange (7-4, 1-0 ACC)
Syracuse, New York; Saturday, 3 p.m. EST

BOTTOM LINE: Syracuse hosts the Cornell Big Red after Judah Mintz scored 24 points in Syracuse’s 86-71 victory over the Monmouth Hawks.
The Orange have gone 5-2 in home games. Syracuse is seventh in the ACC scoring 74.5 points while shooting 46.4% from the field.

The Big Red are 3-2 in road games. Cornell has a 1-2 record in one-possession games.
TOP PERFORMERS: Joseph Girard III averages 2.7 made 3-pointers per game for the Orange, scoring 14.8 points while shooting 34.9% from beyond the arc. Jesse Edwards is shooting 65.3% and averaging 15.3 points over the past 10 games for Syracuse.

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim sorting out which rotations work best (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball, this Saturday afternoon, will face Central New York neighbor Cornell. After that battle between long-time foes, the Orange (7-4) will have completed its non-conference schedule in the 2022-23 season and focus in earnest on its Atlantic Coast Conference slate.

As the ‘Cuse prepares for the meat of its ACC docket and the calendar year gets set to turn to 2023, head coach Jim Boeheim continues to shuffle his rotations to determine which line-ups are most effective.

The Orange roster features 12 scholarship players, including two sophomores, six freshmen, three seniors and one redshirt junior.

We’ll have to see how things shake out further down the line, but for the time being anyway, Boeheim is utilizing a sizable group of players in 2022-23.

In recent years, a frequent complaint among my fellow Syracuse basketball fans is that Boeheim only plays six or seven guys. But in looking at current statistics on the ESPN Web site, nine players are averaging at least 11 minutes per game, and eight guys are collecting at least 14 minutes of run per encounter.

The Syracuse basketball roster has some legitimate depth in the 2022-23 stanza.

The starting five, so far, has consisted of senior shooting guard Joe Girard III, freshman point guard Judah Mintz, sophomore forward Benny Williams, freshman forward Chris Bell, and senior center Jesse Edwards.

ACC men’s basketball power rankings for December 15th (TNIAMM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team is back in action and that means we’re bringing back our weekly ACC Power Rankings.

Don’t ask us to explain our ratings system- just be grateful that Fake Nunes Statistical Index staff has steady work after football season.

Now let’s get to this week’s rankings...

1) Virginia Cavaliers (8-0, 2-0)

Virginia is #2 in the country and has two wins over ranked opponents. It’s a veteran team that is going to be a tough out in March.

2) Miami Hurricanes (10-1, 2-0)

Their one loss was to Maryland and the Hurricanes are out to show that last year’s Elite 8 wasn’t a fluke. They might not even need a twenty-point comeback against Syracuse this year...we’ll see.

3) Duke Blue Devils (10-2, 1-0)

Kyle Filipowski leads Duke in scoring. Do us a favor and don’t look at the numbers he and Donovan Clingan are putting up this year. Don’t do it to yourselves...we care about your mental health.

4) Virginia Tech Hokies (10-1, 1-0)

The Hokies lost Landers Nolley after 2021 and it hasn’t stopped them at all. Keep them on your radar when it’s bracket time.

5) Clemson Tigers (8-3, 1-0)

Lost big to Loyola-Illinois on a night when the Ramblers went 12-24 from behind the arc. I’m sure that led Vice Principal Brownell to take away recess privileges for a couple of days.

6) North Carolina Tar Heels (7-4, 1-1)

UNC finally stopped their skid but the rest of the conference kind of needs them to rebound to boost the league’s metrics.

7) NC State Wolfpack (9-3, 0-2)

Played Miami tough on the road so we push them up even with a loss. Terquavion Smith is leading the ACC in scoring and assists and he’s pushing himself into first-round pick territory.

8) Syracuse Orange (7-4, 1-0) Speaking of leading the ACC, Jesse Edwards is on top in rebounds, blocks, field goal percentage, and PER. It’s not too early to start thinking about Dunkin’ Dutchman 2.0 POY campaign.

Winter storm closes schools, knocks out power in Upstate NY -- and it’s not over yet (PS; Coin)

While Upstate New York has gotten less snow so far than forecast in a winter storm that started Thursday, the wet, sloppy snow that did fall has caused school closings and scattered power outages.

And the storm’s not done yet.

Dozens of school districts across Central New York have closed or are on 2-hour delays. Utility companies report that about 1,000 customers are without power across the eastern half of New York state.

Syracuse received 4 inches of snow as of midnight, and light snow has been falling this morning. The low temperature overnight was 33 degrees, which makes it hard for snow to form and stick around. More snow fell at higher elevations, including the Catskills and the Southern Tier.

“Even when snow has been falling in valley areas, it`s hasn`t been accumulating too efficiently, as the wet nature of snowfall has been causing it to melt and splatter upon contact with the surface,” said the National Weather Service.

A mix of rain and snow will keep falling through much of the day, the weather service said. How much snow and how much rain we get depends on the temperature, which will continue to hover in the low to mid 30s.

“A period of steadier precipitation is expected around the mid to late morning hours, which could allow for changeover to more snow,” the weather service said.

Much of Upstate remains under a winter storm warning until late today or early Saturday.

Forecasters have said for days that this was a difficult storm to accurately predict, in large part because of those near-freezing temperatures.

The focus now is on Western New York and Tug Hill, where heavy lake effect snow could fall through the weekend and into early next week. Three to 4 feet of snow is expected on Tug Hill, just east of Lake Ontario, as cold air blows across the Great Lakes. The Buffalo area could see 1 to 3 feet in narrow snow bands. Heavy snow could fall during the Buffalo Bills-Miami Dolphins game Saturday night at Highmark Stadium, in Orchard Park.

Western New York and Tug Hill are under lake effect snow warnings until Monday.
