Welcome to Abilities Day!

First celebrated in 1999, Abilities Day honors and celebrates people with disabilities and their caregivers. Disabilities can be invisible or visible, can be minimal or severe, and can affect people at any age or place in life. Caregivers labor hard to ensure that those with severe disabilities are comfortable and are able to live to their fullest. Many centers for independent living and hospitals have celebrated Abilities Day, and it has been marked by disability rights organizations such as ADAPT, AAPD, and NDP. Those taking part in the day show their solidarity by wearing white ribbons, or by placing them on Christmas trees and wreaths. The day was created by Paul Benjamin-Dielman Cannaday, an advocate for people with disabilities and the editor and owner of Disability Grapevine.

Syracuse Basketball Report Cards: Pre-Christmas Edition – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Ezeir)

Do you remember our ‘Cuse basketball report cards from last month? Well it’s time to update them right before Syracuse’s final lengthy break of the season. With only two ACC games in SU’s back pocket, take these grades with a slight grain of salt, considering a vast majority of the Orange’s opponents were the likes of Oakland, Monmouth, Lehigh and Northeastern.

JOE GIRARD

It’s been a mixed bag for JG3 over the first 13 games. After taking the country by storm, shooting over 50% from distance (albeit with a small sample size) over the first couple weeks, the senior showed his streaky nature. He shot two-of-25 from the field and just one-for-13 from three-point range, begging the question to whether Symir Torrence and Judah Mintz make up a better backcourt. But almost in a blink of an eye, December rolled around and ignited the Glens Falls native. Girard has rattled off six straight games with 15 or more points. That includes a 47% shooting clip but one that is bogged down by just 36% from downtown over this six-game stretch.

So what does this all amount to? Well, at times it has shown that the senior can be a reliant number one option.

Heating up... JG3 willing the Orange back into it with 15 first-half points. ACCN https://t.co/jaLUy7wArv

But that’s not always the case. In SU’s most recent loss to Pittsburgh, Girard failed to make a bucket in the first half. Now he redeemed himself with a heroic second half scoring effort, but the ‘Cuse fell just short. This should concern Syracuse fans. How reliable is Joe? 13 games in and the answer is similar to the start of the season: let’s wait until ACC play to find out.

The portion of Girard’s game that rises his stock revolves around getting his teammates involved. For a player that averaged a quiet four assists per game, the Orange’s starting two guard isn’t letting up in his new hyper-scoring role, dishing out 21 assists over the last six contests.

Three takeaways from Syracuse basketball’s 84-82 loss to Pittsburgh (TNIAAM; Szuba)

The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team certainly knows how to make things interesting. After trailing by double-digits for most of the game, Syracuse nearly mounted a comeback with two chances to take the lead late but ultimately fell to the Pittsburgh Panthers 84-82 on Tuesday night.

Trailing by one with less than 30 seconds left, an errant entry pass to Jesse Edwards was intercepted. Then, after fouling and a split pair of Pittsburgh free throws, a last second three point attempt from Judah Mintz failed to drop as Syracuse lost for the first time in six games.

Pittsburgh was able to dissect the Orange 2-3 zone in the first half, jumping out to a 41-33 lead at the break. The Syracuse seniors were limited in the first as Jesse Edwards wasn’t able to get paint touches down low. Joe Girard drew the unenviable assignment of trying to score against Jamarius Burton and had just three points at the half.

In the second, Syracuse trailed by 13 with over five minutes to go. A 15-4 run got the game to 83-82 with 30 seconds left, but the Orange weren’t able to regain the lead.

It’s a hard ask for Edwards to anchor the press when playing through foul trouble, but the senior big managed to play with four fouls before fouling out on the penultimate offensive play for Syracuse. Girard wasn’t given much room, but he found enough space to get his shot off and finished with 16 points. Mintz tied a career-high 24 points but needed 17 shots to get there. The freshman shot 8-12 from the line. The defense was the most glaring issue for Syracuse, but the half-court offense, especially in the first half, lacked.

Sideline guests of Josh Allen, Gabe David and Stefon Diggs were in attendance.

College men's basketball: Syracuse unable to lasso victory against Pittsburgh (yahoo.com; St Croix)

Despite the presence of Buffalo Bills stars courtside, the Syracuse University men's basketball team was unable to circle the wagons Tuesday night.

Blake Hinson and Nelly Cummings combined to score 47 points to help Pittsburgh fend off Syracuse, 84-82, for the Atlantic Coast Conference victory in the JMA Wireless Dome.

Syracuse nearly erased a 20-point deficit over the final 11 minutes but couldn't convert two chances at a potential go-ahead or game-tying bucket in the last 17 seconds.

The Orange (8-5 overall, 1-1 ACC) had its five-game win streak snapped and will be off until hosting the Boston College Eagles at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 in the Dome.

"I thought the last group played as hard as they could play, got us back in there, but you can't start the game out (that way), we just had no effort from our forwards from the beginning," SU coach Jim Boeheim said. "It's hard to watch."

Among the crowd of 15,427 fans were Bills quarterback Josh Allen and a group of his receivers, including starters Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis. They sat courtside next to the SU bench as guests of Syracuse businessman Adam Weitsman.

Syracuse did its best to put on a show for the NFL stars but came up short in the late comeback bid.

Joseph Girard III connected on a pull-up 3-pointer amid traffic at the top of the key to cut the Pittsburgh edge to 83-82 with 41 seconds left, capping off a 10-2 SU run that got the Dome rocking.

Reliving 2003: With a 58-point half, SU routs Georgia Tech and puts the nation on notice (PS; Croyle)

Editor’s note: In a season-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of Syracuse basketball’s 2003 NCAA championship, Syracuse.com will relive the journey by republishing the game stories that ran in The Post-Standard through the title game victory vs. Kansas in New Orleans.

RED HOT ORANGE

SU STINGS JACKETS WITH 58-POINT FIRST HALF

By Kim Baxter Staff writer

Last year, Syracuse University senior Kueth Duany said Georgia Tech gave them a “butt whupping” when the Orangemen went to Atlanta and came home with a 96-80 defeat.

SU got a little revenge with a 92-65 spanking of the Yellow Jackets on Saturday in the Carrier Dome.

The game had an ominous start for Syracuse when Georgia Tech jumped out to an 11-4 lead just four minutes into the action. But the Orangemen increased the defensive pressure with their 2-3 zone and made 10-of-17 3-pointers to gain a 58-25 halftime lead.

The first 20 minutes was the most complete half of basketball the team has played all year.

“Both ends of the court, I don’t think we can play any better, I really don’t,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “I don’t know how much of that is Georgia Tech didn’t play well, but we didn’t give them any shots.”

“Everything went our way. Not everything, but we made our shots. It was our day in the first half.”

Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt, whose team has played Tennessee, Minnesota and Georgia, was impressed with Syracuse.

Five Takeaways: Veteran Panthers Compete Until the Buzzer, Pull Out Road Win Over Syracuse (pittsburghsportsnow; Michalowski)

The individual players on this Pitt team knew how to win coming into this season, but the team as a whole? Not quite.

Bringing in a new group of leaders is going to be tough no matter what, especially when your starting five is made up of four transfers (Burton two years ago) and one JuCo prospect. However, we’ve known it all year: Jeff Capel went out and got these new guys for a few important reasons: They are talented veterans that can shoot the basketball and win games.

However, through the first few weeks of the season, the team struggled to put it all together and do those things that each individual guy had been so used to. But now, as we approach holiday season and ACC play, the Panthers are sitting at 9-4 with a 2-0 ACC record and are clearly learning how to win together.

On Tuesday night, the Panthers battled off a ferocious 20-point comeback from ACC foe Syracuse in a raucous JMA Dome (formerly Carrier Dome). The Panthers won the game 84-82, sending the Orange crowd home quietly. Pitt’s three leading scorers on the night were all three transfers that arrived on campus this summer: Blake Hinson (25 points), Nelly Cummings (22), and Greg Elliott (12).

“We let them back in the game, and that’s not what we want to do clearly, but you’ve got to be so thankful, so blessed to be in this position,” leading scorer Blake Hinson (Iowa State transfer) said after the win. “ACC game, on the road. Be in a position to make a play and thank God I was there. It wasn’t just that play but being there after it was all said and done, it’s just so exciting.”

MBB: Mind-Boggling Stat of the Day 2022 Dec 21

Tuesday night's Miami/Virginia Men's Basketball game was special for reasons other than the game itself:

As the great @ByDavidTeel points out ...

Miami-Virginia tonight is the first AP Top 25 vs. AP Top 25 game in the ACC since Feb. 15, 2021.

221 ACC vs. ACC games since then, including postseason -- 44 had one team ranked, the other 177 had both teams unranked. https://t.co/GvFBGmbprc
— Tim Reynolds (@ByTimReynolds) December 20, 2022

Hard to imagine that last year the ACC went an entire regular season without a Top 25 game! Even more mind-boggling when you realize how well the ACC teams performed in the NCAA Tournament. The fault must lie in the AP voters rather than the ACC...

‘One of the most intense storm systems in decades’ to lash Upstate NY on Christmas weekend (PS; Coin)

When to travel in Upstate NY to beat frozen blast expected just before Christmas weekend

Syracuse, N.Y. -- It would be hard to conjure up a worst-case weather scenario as bad as the one we’re facing this weekend: On the three-day Christmas weekend, Upstate New York could be slammed with a storm so powerful and so disruptive it happens only once every few decades.

“Old Man Winter will unleash the full fury of winter upon our region,” said the National Weather Service office in Buffalo, which will be ground zero for the storm Friday through early next week. Atmospheric conditions, the weather service added, “will spawn one of the most intense storm systems in decades to impact the Midwest and Great Lakes region.”

Ministers are being urged to warn their congregations of hazardous driving conditions, and weather warnings are being published in at least seven different languages at Buffalo’s immigrant center, according to The Buffalo News.

Here’s what Upstate is facing over the holiday weekend, according to the weather service:

-- Torrential rain that, combined with melting snow, could cause isolated flooding by Friday morning.

-- Plummeting temperatures Friday afternoon that could turn streets and sidewalks to ice.

-- Winds up to 65 mph, strong enough to topple trees and utility lines.

-- Widespread power outages that could last for days.

-- Brutal cold with wind chills dipping to 10 or even 20 below zero

-- Heavy lake effect snow that, combined with Thruway-speed winds, will make driving almost impossible.
