Are you ready for some football? We hope so, because February 1 is National Signing Day! Where do you see yourself in five years? Does this simple question lead you into a malaise of existential dread? Then try being a high school recruit deciding on a college on the first Wednesday in February every year. On February 1, National Signing Day, a whole group of high school football players are eligible to commit to the college of their choice. Some of the most talented players announce their decisions in front of television cameras and their entire school. So don’t sweat your next five years—at least you don’t have to make your decisions in front of an audience.

When Virginia needed big buckets it turned to a fifth-year point guard who teammates say has “played 25 years of college basketball” and seems to have tortured Syracuse for every single day of it.
When the Cavaliers needed a big defensive play, they turned to Jayden Gardner, a burly veteran in his senior year.
For the fourth time this season, Syracuse had a chance to earn a marquee win by making a few critical plays down the stretch. For the fourth time the Orange fell short. For the fourth time, experience won out, this time in a 67-62 loss to Virginia.
“They’re kind of like us,” Gardner said of the Orange. “But we have way older guys.”
Syracuse fans will have to hope Gardner’s take is an honest one, rather than some Southern politeness from a team and coach that personify it.
The Cavaliers (17-3, 9-2 ACC) have reason to be sweet. They’ve beaten the Orange (13-10, 6-6) nine out of the 10 times the teams have played over the last six seasons.
“We played, easily, the best game we have all year,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “They’re a really good team. If we make our free throws, we win the game ... They beat us. Just like they beat everyone else.”
Ken Pomeroy ranks Virginia as the fourth-most experienced team in the country. North Carolina is No. 26. Miami is No. 39. Pitt ranks No. 18.
Syracuse ranks No. 285.
The Orange has staggered down the stretch against each of those veteran teams, accounting for its four close calls in big games this year.
Age won out again on Monday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Veteran Virginia has found ways to win, climbing to No. 6 in the Associated Press Top 25 by the opening tip, and departed the building extolling the importance of grinding out wins on a night when its players had tired legs.
Youthful Syracuse has found ways lose. The Orange has lost every single game that it has played this season against a good (and healthy) team. Even on its best night of the year it couldn’t make the winning plays.
With no marquee wins, the Orange’s last hope for the NCAA Tournament this season will come in the ACC Tournament.
In reality, it will almost certainly come further down the road than that, and it will require the promising members of the squad to stick around in the transient world of college basketball and eventually flourish.

Syracuse basketball: Recruit Marcus Adams to announce Top 5 after official visit to SU (PS; $; Waters)
Marcus Adams Jr., a 6-foot-8 high school recruit; and Cory DeSanti, his AAU coach, had a lot to talk about on their return flights to California after spending the previous two days on an official visit to the SU campus.
After making a connecting flight in Chicago by two minutes and then landing in Los Angeles, the two had to come a decision.
“We had a lot to talk about,’' Adams said. “I am announcing my top five tomorrow (Wednesday) and Syracuse is in it.’'
Adams attends Narbonne High School in Los Angeles. He plays for DeSanti’s Elev8 Elite AAU team. He is ranked No. 61 in the 2024 class by 247Sports.com. He holds over a dozen scholarship offers, but has been receiving the most interest from Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and San Diego State.

Syracuse Orange news: Big man plans to visit, football scores a commit (itlh; Adler)
According to a tweet from M&L Tonight, Syracuse Orange basketball 2023 recruiting target William Patterson plans to make his college decision in April, and he is also eyeing a visit to the ‘Cuse in the near future.
Patterson, an underrated 7-foot-2, 220-pound power forward/center from New York City, took an unofficial visit to the Syracuse Orange campus last August to play in the team’s annual Elite Camp. While at the camp, he landed a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse coaching staff.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Patterson is a senior at The Patrick School in Hillside, N.J., after previously suiting up for the Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, Md., which is a member of the loaded National Interscholastic Basketball Conference.
Several media reports in recent months have indicated that Syracuse Orange basketball is a serious contender to prevail in Patterson’s recruitment. Per reports and recruiting services, his offer sheet also includes Oklahoma State, Rutgers and TCU.

Makai Ashton-Langford had two key driving baskets in the closing two minutes and finished with 15 points to help Boston College beat the 20th-ranked Tigers 62-54 on Tuesday night.
“I couldn’t get my guys under control. I couldn’t get them to relax. That’s my fault,” Clemson coach Brad Brownell said. “For whatever reason, we just didn't do a good job tonight. I didn't do a good job as a coach.”
On Saturday, Clemson escaped with an 82-81 victory at Florida State.
Jaeden Zackery added 13 points for the Eagles (11-12, 5-7 Atlantic Coast Conference). BC held Clemson to one meaningful field goal — and that came with 18 seconds left — in the final 13:16.
Hunter Tyson led Clemson (18-5, 10-2) with 22 points and Chase Hunter had 12. The Tigers fell into a tie in the loss column atop the ACC with No. 6 Virginia (9-2 ACC).
“It was one of those nights where the other team played better than we did,” Brownell said. “We had a lot of self-inflicted wounds. We didn’t share the ball much. When we got behind, we kind of panicked and hoped Chase and Hunter would bail us out. That's poor coaching.”
The Eagles used a 5-0 spurt — with T.J. Bickerstaff hitting a free throw and getting a driving layup — to pull ahead 50-45 with just over five minutes to play.
Clemson sliced it to 50-47 before Aston-Langford made his two big baskets. He followed that by making two free throws with 32 seconds left.
“That's just about digging deep honestly,” Zackery said. “That's just all it was. We’ve been kind of talking about it all season that we’ve just got to come out and grind.”
Trailing by 10 midway into the second half, the Tigers went on a 10-0 spree, tying it at 45 when RJ Godfrey hit both ends of a 1-and-1.
The Eagles had opened a double-digit lead twice in the opening six minutes of the second half, the later 45-35 on Prince Aligbe’s foul-line jumper with 14:12 to play.

The coldest temperatures in years, combined with strong wind gusts, could create dangerously low wind chills this weekend in Upstate New York.
The National Weather Service has issued wind chill alerts for most of New York. Wind chill values are expected to be well below zero Saturday morning across all of Upstate, and could plunge as low as 60 below in the Adirondacks.
“The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” the weather service warned.
The cold blast of air is descending from the Arctic and covering most of the Northeast Friday and Saturday. Strong winds, with gusts exceeding 35 mph, will accompany the brutally cold air.
The temperature in Central New York could plunge to 14 below zero Saturday morning, the weather service predicts. It hasn’t been that cold in Syracuse since New Year’s Day 2018, when it was 15 below.
Wind chills Saturday in Syracuse could hit 30 degrees below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin within a half-hour.
“This would be a shock to the body even during the coldest winters,” the weather service said, “but considering how relatively mild January has been, this will be even more so.”
The Syracuse Pond Hockey Classic, scheduled for Saturday, was called off today -- because, ironically, the weather has been too warm. January has been 8 degrees above normal, too warm for solid ice to form on Hiawatha Lake. Saturday’s deep freeze will come too late.

The Tigers lost to a below .500 Eagles team, and lost by 8. That's not a one or two possession game, folks. That hurts! I oughta know - my Hokies lost to BC back in December, albeit in overtime, by 5 points. Still hurts though.
