Welcome to Susan B Anthony Day!

Today we celebrate Susan B. Anthony, who was born on today's date in 1820. Susan B. Anthony Day is not officially celebrated nationally. In 2011, Representative Carolyn Maloney introduced the Susan B. Anthony Birthday Act, which would have designated the third Monday in February as Susan B. Anthony Day, but the bill did not become law. The holiday is celebrated in some capacities on the state level. As of 2019, Florida is the only state where Susan B. Anthony Day is an official holiday on February 15. In Wisconsin and California, the holiday is celebrated in public schools. In West Virginia, the holiday is celebrated on election day on even-numbered years. Anthony's birthday is celebrated each August in Massachusetts. Additionally, Susan B. Anthony Day is celebrated unofficially across the country, as the birthdays of prominent historical figures often are.

Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts. Her Aunt Susan, whom she had been named after, married a man named Brownell, and that is where Anthony got her middle initial from. Her family was made up of Quakers and activists, and in 1845 they moved to Rochester, New York, where they became part of the abolitionist movement. Anthony became a teacher, where she pushed for educational reforms, such as for more inclusion for girls and African Americans.

Syracuse guard Judah Mintz (3) against North Carolina State on Tuesday. Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.comScott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Judah Mintz’s poise down the stretch helps seal win for Syracuse: ‘He’s not a freshman anymore’ (PS; $; Ditota)

For Judah Mintz, the late-game tension seemed so familiar, so readily reachable.

The Syracuse point guard had been involved in so many games this season where a play here or there down the stretch might mean the difference between defeat and victory.

He fumbled a couple of late-game plays himself. His teammates accounted for other miscues. The Orange nearly toppled Miami, Pittsburgh and North Carolina this season. Virginia in the JMA Wireless Dome could have gone either way.

None of those agonizingly close games resulted in wins.

But on Tuesday, before an enthusiastic crowd in its home building, Syracuse found a way to take down a top ACC team. The Orange in general, and Mintz in particular, displayed a poise built on all those heartachingly brutal losses.

And in the final few minutes, SU made the plays it needed to put away a stubborn Top 25 opponent.

“We’ve been in situations like that, situations even tougher than today,” Mintz said after SU defeated N.C. State 75-72. “We’ve been in situations like that before. It wasn’t anything new to us. We’re getting more mature as the season goes on, I’d say.”

Mintz’s growing maturity has been evident in each of Syracuse’s last few games when he is figuring out how to best pair his basketball skills with his unyielding determination. He was terrific down the stretch Tuesday against tough, talented Jarkel Joiner, who tried to keep Mintz out of the painted area where he thrives.

Mintz scored 20 points Tuesday, 16 of them in the second half when he kept applying pressure with his dribble and with his shooting stroke. He accounted for nine Syracuse assists against a single turnover. He grabbed three rebounds.

Judah Mintz Hits The Mark When It Matters Most To Lead Syracuse Past No. 23 NC State (bcsnn.com)

Freshman guard Judah Mintz scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, including two free throws with 24 seconds left, to lead Syracuse (16-10, 9-6 ACC) past #23/22 NC State (20-7, 10-6), 75-72, on Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Senior center Jesse Edwards posted his 11th double-double, tallying 18 points and 16 rebounds. Syracuse had all five starters score in double digits with senior guard Joseph Girard III (14 points) and freshmen forwards Chris Bell (11) and Maliq Brown (10) joining Mintz and Edwards.

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With the Wolfpack holding a 70-67 lead and 3:11 remaining. the Orange rallied. Mintz converted his first 3-pointer of the night with 2:42 left to knot the score, 70-70. Syracuse came up with a defensive stop at one end and Edwards contributed a conventional three-point play at the other to put the hosts up, 73-70, and 1:47 on the clock.

D.J. Burns, who finished with 15 points for NC State, answered with a basket in the lane but missed the ensuing free throw. The Wolfpack then forced the Orange into a shot-clock violation, and had possession trailing by one. Edwards drew a charge on Burns and Mintz was fouled attacking the basket to set up his two free throw makes. NC State managed two more shot attempts but misfired and the Orange emerged.

WOLFPACK HOWL IN THE EARLY GOING
A 3-pointer by the Wolfpack's Jarkel Joiner knotted the contest for the third time in the opening six minutes, 8-8. Joiner tacked five points onto his triple, which sent NC State on a 14-2 run. Terquanvion Smith dunked the ball on an assist from Joiner to conclude the spurt. The visitors held a 19-10 advantage with under 10 left before halftime.

The Orange responded by scoring 15 of the next 20 points. Girard got things going with a jumper and added a 3-pointer to account for five points. Brown led Syracuse with six points, his dunk coupled with a dunk from Bell gave the SU a one-point edge, 25-24. Edwards closed out the Orange effort with two makes at the line and Syracuse led, 27-24, with three minutes remaining in the first frame.

NC State knotted the game three times in the remaining three minutes of the half. Casey Morsell made a layup to tie the game 31-31 with 51 ticks left. In the final 36 seconds, four points by Bell put the Orange in front, sending SU into halftime with a 35-31 advantage.

SU basketball finally has a feather for its cap in defeating NC State (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

The signature wins had passed Syracuse by one-by-one in an agonizing way as the 2022-23 season has progressed.
Pittsburgh. Virginia (twice). Miami. North Carolina.

All so close, yet so far away with four of those five losses coming by four points or less.

The Orange finally got to drink its coffee with a 75-72 victory over North Carolina State at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.

It was Syracuse’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2021. The Orange had swung and missed at four ranked opponents this season before taking down the 23rd-ranked Wolfpack.

On the day we learned that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will return to Syracuse (I believe it was also some sort of national holiday?) the appropriate song to play in response to the win would be “Growin’ Up.”

Maybe the right things are starting to click for this young team that’s not so young anymore.

It’s probably too late for any sort of meaningful postseason run, but Syracuse (16-10, 9-6) has won three straight games and officially made the rest of the season interesting.

Reliving 2003: Trailing ND by 12 in 2nd half, Orange turns to Carmelo (PS; $; Croyle)

Editor’s note: In a season-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of Syracuse basketball’s 2003 NCAA championship, Syracuse.com will relive the journey by republishing the game stories that ran in the Post-Standard through the title game victory vs. Kansas in New Orleans.

MAC ENDS ‘MELO-DRAMA

ANTHONY CARRIES ORANGE

By Mike Waters Staff writer

Jim Boeheim all but threw a saddle on Carmelo Anthony’s back.

Trailing 10th-ranked Notre Dame by 12 points midway through the second half on Saturday, the Syracuse Orangemen went to Anthony again and again, riding the 6-foot-8 freshman to an 82-80 victory in front of 32,116 fans at the Carrier Dome.

Anthony scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the last 15 minutes of the game, including a stretch in which he scored 10 of Syracuse’s 14 points to wipe out Notre Dame’s 67-55 lead and tie the game at 69 with six minutes remaining.

Anthony’s final points came on a scoop shot with 1:30 remaining, giving Syracuse its first lead in more than 15 minutes at 79-77.

“We rode our horse the whole last 10 minutes,” Boeheim said. “We were dead in the water there. We went to him every play. We were going to go to Carmelo every time until they stopped him.”

Anthony even played a role in Gerry McNamara’s game-winning shot, without touching the ball.

After Matt Carroll’s 3-pointer put Notre Dame in front 80-79, Syracuse called timeout with 26.2 seconds remaining. SU figured to go to Anthony. Notre Dame coach Mike Brey elected to show man-to-man and then switch into a zone to stop him. When the Notre Dame players followed Anthony, McNamara was left open on the wing.

McNamara, who was 2-for-8 on 3-pointers to that point, drilled the game-winner with 20.8 seconds left.

Brey said “we got so Anthony-distracted,” explaining why McNamara was all alone in front of the SU bench for the winning shot.

“We were, obviously, going to Carmelo,” Boeheim said. “He took the back zone guys to the basket, and Gerry’s standing there.”

The victory left Syracuse (17-4 overall, 8-3 in the Big East) atop the West Division standings, a half-game ahead of Notre Dame (19-5, 7-3) and Pittsburgh (17-4, 7-3). The Panthers lost at Seton Hall on Saturday. The Orangemen remain undefeated in 14 home games this season.

https://www.si.com/nba/draft/newsfeed/nba-draft-roundup-gradey-dick-duke-trio-see-productive-nights (SI; Staff)

Tuesday featured a loaded slate of college basketball games, many of which included 2023 NBA Draft hopefuls looking to raise their stock.

Here were some of the top performances from Tuesday’s slate of college basketball games:

Gradey Dick, Kansas

After a stretch of lackluster performances, Dick got back on track Tuesday night, pouring on 26 points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals. He shot 10-for-17 from the field and 4-for-9 from three.

The Jayhawks beat the white-hot Oklahoma State Cowboys, 87-76.

On the season, Dick is now averaging 13.9 points, 5.0 assists and 1.6 rebounds. He's shooting 45 percent overall and 42 percent from outside.

The Blue Devils

Duke’s trio of high-profile recruits has solid outings on Tuesday night.

Kyle Filipowski led the way, scoring 22 points, grabbing six boards, dishing out three assists and issuing one block.

Dariq Whitehead, fresh off another injury, shot 3-for-4 from beyond the arc to finish with nine points.

Seven-footer Dereck Lively was the least productive of the bunch, but still managed to score six points, grab six rebounds and block two shots.

Judah Mintz, Syracuse

Potential 2023 draftee Judah Mintz saw one of his best games to date on Tuesday, helping the Orange to an upset with over No. 23 NC State.

Mintz scored 20 points and dished nine assists. He finished 7-for-12 from the field, 1-for-2 from three and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.

Mintz is averaging 15.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals in 22 games so far this season. The freshman has had an overall productive debut campaign that's been marred by his lack of a consistent 3-point shot.

Notre Dame HC Mike Brey says Pitt’s Jeff Capel Should Win ACC Coach of the Year (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Michalowski)

As March rapidly approaches, Pitt basketball sits atop the ACC rankings along with Virginia, who the Panthers beat in early January,

At 11-3 in ACC play, the Panthers have shocked people around the conference and around the nation this year, and the job that head coach Jeff Capel has done in turning this team around has not gone unnoticed by opposing coaches around the league.

On Monday, Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey offered high praise for Capel, saying that the fifth-year Pitt HC has his vote for ACC Coach of the Year.

“I would want my son to play for him because he does it right,” Brey added.

Brey recently announced that he would be retiring following this season — his 23rd leading the Notre Dame program.

Pitt will be traveling to South Bend to take on the Irish in Brey’s last home game as head coach of Notre Dame on Wednesday, March 1.

Notre Dame’s Mike Brey just joined Jeff Capel on the ACC call and said the two should play HORSE at halftime of his last home game at ND.
Capel was talking about Brey’s personality when he chimed in.
“He never took himself too seriously,” Capel said right before Brey joined. pic.twitter.com/iYxHA8XuXE
— George Michalowski (@MichalowskiCBB) January 23, 2023

Prior to this year, Capel’s Panthers had not won more than six ACC games in any of his first four seasons at the helm. This year, the Panthers have already won six ACC games on the road alone, and have won 11 total heading into Tuesday’s matchup with Boston College.

Is Duke, UNC or anyone else too big to fail? (theathletic.com; Brennan)

On March 27, 2022, Bubba Cunningham was standing in a small circle in the darkened back corridors of the Wells Fargo Center. Two reporters had pulled him aside, hoping for his perspective on what North Carolina — what coach Hubert Davis — had just done. The Tar Heels, in their first season after the retirement of legend Roy Williams, had easily handled Cinderella Saint Peter’s in the Elite Eight; the following weekend, they would play old rival Duke in the Final Four.

For much of the year, the handoff between Williams and his preferred successor had been rocky. Williams heard all of the complaints. The Tar Heels were a bubble team without meaningful marquee victories; fans with high expectations felt immediate nagging doubt. Then North Carolina turned it around, discovered itself, strung together long stretches of good basketball, toppled Duke at Duke on Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game, and stormed into the NCAA Tournament as a talented No. 8 seed on a mission. Davis had tweaked and tinkered and gotten them humming. He reached the Final Four in Year 1. Already Carolina’s succession plan — its first shot at replacing an icon for the second time in its history — looked like a rousing success.

Williams was over the moon. “I wanted somebody to take my place that loved the university and the basketball program the way Roy Williams did,” he said. Cunningham was understandably just as giddy. Williams had pushed hard for Davis’s hire, but Cunningham had made the ultimate call, and the sustained health of the men’s basketball program is any North Carolina athletic director’s top responsibility. Thanks to the previous month, Cunningham could happily reiterate what he had also seen in Davis: He was the continuation of the UNC hoops tradition. By now, the rest of the world had seen it too. “You could tell he was passionate about Carolina,” Cunningham said. “He has been mentored by and watched great coaches all his life. That’s really helpful when you’re trying to build your own program. He knows exactly how he wants to build his program. And he’s doing it.”

Eleven months later, North Carolina, with four of five returning starters from last year’s team, is more at risk of missing the tournament than it ever was a season ago. The preseason Associated Press No. 1 is statistically worse in nearly every way; the Tar Heels have matched last season’s loss total (10) in a fraction of the time, have just lost four of their last five, and haven’t notched a Quadrant 1 win. “This would’ve never even crossed my mind,” star forward Armando Bacot told reporters Monday night. “On a level of worried? I’m 100 percent worried.”

Armando Bacot: “It’s just tough. Has been all year. You know, this is not how any of us wanted it to go.”

Fizz Instant Reactions: Syracuse 75, No. 23 NC State 72 (orangefizz.net; podcast; Griffin)

ACC Roundup Syracuse Upsets NC State, Pitt Rolls Over BC (DBR; King)

Despite a triple double by Jarkel Joyner, just the fourth in program history, NC State fell to Syracuse Tuesday night, 75-72.

There were a couple of times when each team had a bit of a lead but it was a pretty close game generally speaking. It wasn’t really decided until quite late when Jesse Edwards converted a three point play with 1:47 to go to put the Orange up 73-70.

DJ Burns then got a three point play of his own but missed the free throw. Judah Mintz converted a pair of free throws for the final winning margin.

Syracuse moves to 16-10 overall and 9-6 in the ACC. NC State falls to a still respectable 20-7 and 10-6 in the conference.

Meanwhile down in Pittsburgh, after a slow start, the Panthers woke up and overwhelmed Boston College, 77-58 with a 21-2 run.

Blake Hinson got hot again, hitting 7-15 overall and 6-11 from behind the line. He finished with 21. All other Pitt starters finished in double figures.

It was Pitt’s sixth straight win. The Panthers are now are now 19-7 and 12-3 in the ACC and all alone in first place. Earlier, we thought that Brad Brownell was the odds-on favorite to win ACC Coach of the Year. Now we’d argue that it’s Jeff Capel. He’s about as far off the hot seat as possible.

Three games on tap for Wednesday: Virginia is at Louisville, the battle of the Techs take place in Atlanta and Florida State visits Clemson. We could make cases for upsets in any of these except for Louisville-Virginia.

Georgia Tech has shown more backbone lately and their defense is pretty good. Virginia Tech has talent but seems to have a fairly low ceiling. But we’d take them here.

Keeping Up With The 315 2-14-23 (ESPN; radio; The 315)

Brian Higgins starts the show looking at the remaining schedule for Syracuse hoops and what they need to do to insert themselves into the tournament picture. Plus, some SU-NC State history and a preview of tonight’s game.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2023...tball-questions-for-week-of-february-14-2023/ (ASD; JFann)

Does Virginia Tech get back on the bubble this week (part 2)?

Virginia Tech has the most intriguing resume in the ACC at 15-10 (5-9) with a NET of 56. The Hokies flat choked in losing a winnable home game to Boston College, but looking at their resume they are still alive for an NCAA At-Large birth. How is this possible?

The Hokies have a better NET Ranking than 5 ACC teams ahead of them in the standings and have enough opportunities on the schedule to get on the bubble. In their final 6 games, they play at Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Miami, Duke, Louisville and Florida State. With a 20-11 (10-10) resume that puts Virginia Tech squarely on the bubble and that likely means wins in 2 of 3 games against Pitt, Miami, and Duke. Hokies – I swear don’t lose to Georgia Tech, Louisville, or Florida State or the last of your 9 lives will be used up.

Is this the make-or-break NCAA week for North Carolina?

North Carolina played exceptionally well in a 91-71 win over Clemson. At 16-10- (8-7) and NET of 46, but without a Q1 the Heels still have plenty of work to do. This week they’ve already missed a chance by losing to Miami at home. Now they go on the road to NC State. These are two NCAA-caliber teams looking to improve their seeding. It’s going to be very very difficult for the Tar Heels to get an at-large bid if they get swept this week. They will have virtually no margin of error the rest of the way. The Heels have to find a way to go at least 1-1 this week, and they are already off to an 0-1 start. This makes the game with NC State even more critical.

Does Virginia take over the #1 spot in the ACC this week?

Virginia has been the ACC’s best team for weeks, but they haven’t taken over the top of the ACC alone. It seems inevitable, and is this the week the Hoos take over 1st place in the ACC?

You have to like their chances in a game at Louisville and at home against Notre Dame. NC State is still two games back. Clemson doesn’t look equipped to keep pace any longer. Miami might have a shot, but we’ll wait until they catch Virginia in the loss column. Pittsburgh is even with Virginia at 11-3 in AC, and plays Boston College at home then goes on the road to Virginia Tech. That certainly is a tougher week ahead than Virginia, and that feels like a split coming.

Yes, I think this is the week Virginia takes over the top spot in the ACC all alone.

Pitt wins sixth straight and is alone in first place in ACC (cbssports.com; AP)

Blake Hinson made six 3-pointers in scoring 21 points and Pittsburgh left Boston College behind in the second half to win 77-58 on Tuesday night and take a half-game lead in the ACC.

The Panthers (19-7, 12-3) won their sixth straight game, set a program record for most ACC wins in a season, and gave themselves at least a 24-hour perch alone atop the conference standings. No. 7 Virginia (11-3) plays at last-place Louisville on Wednesday.

Hinson was 6 of 11 on 3-pointers, Greg Elliott added four more and the Panthers finished 11 of 25 from the arc. Elliott scored 14 points, Nelly Cummings added 11 and Jamarius Burton and Federiko Federiko had 10 each.

Mason Madsen made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for the Eagles (12-15, 6-10). Jaeden Zackery added 11 points. Quinten Post, averaging nearly 17 points per game, finished with seven and fouled out.

Hinson's 3-pointer gave Pitt the first double-digit lead of the night and that bucket plus his four-point play were part of a 21-2 run that put the Panthers ahead by 24 with nine minutes left. Meanwhile, Boston College was missing 13 consecutive shots.

Pitt trailed by seven before outscoring Boston College 23-7 over the final eight minutes of the first half to lead by nine, capped by Hinson's fourth 3-pointer. He had 14 first-half points.

Boston College is at Florida State and Pitt is at Virginia Tech in Saturday games.

One Upstate New York city has the most single ladies in America (PS; $; Hernandez)

If you feel like you’re looking for love in all the wrong places, one survey has uncovered where the most single people live in the United States, and Buffalo, New York comes in at the top of the charts.

The Thriving Center of Psychology recently published a new survey on dating trends combined with 2021 U.S. Census data to find out where the more than 127 million single people 18 years and older living in America can be found.

The Queen City ranked first in the most single women in the country and third in the most single residents overall. The only cities with more singletons were Richmond, VA and Pittsburgh, PA.

Comparatively, Buffalo ranked ninth in most single men.

This isn’t the first time the Western New York city has been called out for being a top spot to be single. In 2022, LendingTree named Buffalo the best large city in the United States to be unattached. The city ranked high on the list because of relatively low housing prices, low commute times, and a high percentage of people living alone.

According to another LendingTree study, single women in Buffalo are doing it for themselves. In 2021, it was reported that there were more single women owning homes than single men in the city. Nationally, it ranked fourth in the top five metro areas for single woman homeowners.

The Thriving Center of Psychology went on to survey over 1,000 people about their thoughts on Valentine’s Day, how Americans feel being single, and the dreaded dating apps. Out of the 69% of people surveyed said they are content with their singledom and of those, 91% said they are enjoying their freedom.

Bishop gives CNY Catholics blessing to eat Corned Beef this St. Patrick’s Day. Here’s why (PS; Cazentre)

Faithful Catholics hoping to enjoy their traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal of Corned Beef and Cabbage can relax despite the fact that March 17 this year is a Friday during the solemn season of Lent.

Syracuse Catholic Bishop Douglas J. Lucia has given his blessing (actually called a dispensation) for Catholics to eat meat on this St. Patrick’s Day. Devout Catholics age 14 and older typically abstain from eating meat on Fridays in Lent.

In his message, Lucia noted that “the religious celebration of St. Patrick is an important one, particularly for Irish-American Catholics, and traditionally involves the consumption of meat.”

Lucia did ask that Catholics taking advantage of the St. Patrick’s dispensation abstain from meat on a different day that week or “perform a charitable work or ... engage in some other Lenten devotion.”

In the Catholic Church, Lent is the 40-day period that precedes the Holy Week observance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It is a time of penance and reflection.

Lucia’s dispensation will be formally issued on Feb. 22, which this year is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Lent this year runs until April 7, which is Good Friday. Easter Sunday is April 9.

Although it’s not noted in his dispensation message, Lucia’s official biography on the diocese web site indicates March 17 is also his birthday.
