Welcome to National Pi Day!

Pi Day celebrates the pi symbol (π) and its importance to mathematics. The symbol is a Greek letter, and it is used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The first digits of this ratio are 3.14159, and the number continues infinitely without pattern. It has been calculated to over one trillion digits after the decimal point. Most calculations only need the first few digits. Even the spherical volume of the whole universe can be calculated by using just 39 digits after the decimal point. The symbol "π" was first used in 1706 by William Jones. It gained in popularity after being used by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737. The first large and official celebration of the day took place at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. It was organized by Larry Shaw, a physicist at the Exploratorium. At the inaugural event, people marched around a circular space and ate fruit pies. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution supporting Pi Day.

Former Baldwinsville star JJ Starling has entered transfer portal: Could Syracuse be his destination? (PS; Ditota)

JJ Starling, the former Baldwinsville High School basketball star, is in the transfer portal.

Starling, a 5-star recruit, spent his freshman season at Notre Dame. He was recruited heavily by Syracuse and has a good relationship with new Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry, who was his lead recruiter.

Starling was one of the gems of the 2022 recruiting class. At 6-foot-4 combo guard, he was the star of the Albany City Rocks AAU program his final summer with the Albany-based team. He was a versatile scorer who could attack the rim and shoot the ball from deep.

A former McDonald’s All-American, he is considered, right now, the top player in the 2023 transfer portal.

During an April 2021 conversation with a Syracuse.com reporter, Starling talked about his friendship with Trey Autry and his close relationship with Adrian Autry as factors in his Syracuse interest.

“That’s a great school. Great people. Been close to them forever,” he said. “Coach Autry, Trey, that’s like family, that’s like my brother. We’ve been close since third grade. Met at a basketball camp at Syracuse. And then we played AAU against each other and with each other, so yeah, Syracuse is always going to be on my mind.”

Starling chose Notre Dame from a litany of programs that included Syracuse, Stanford, Maryland, Alabama, Duke and Miami.

He played 28 games for Notre Dame, starting 24 of them. He did not play in the ACC Tournament because of a knee injury, though he was in Greensboro with his team. Starling has not played for Notre Dame since a Feb. 22 loss to North Carolina in the Joyce Center. Starling averaged 11.2 points on 42.1% shooting this season.

The transfer portal for college basketball players opened today.

Syracuse men’s basketball: Adrian Autry’s most important task (TNIAAM; De Guzman)

As the Syracuse Orange embark on a new era with Adrian Autry at the helm, a plethora of challenges immediately face the new leader of the Orange. There’s recruiting issues, portal transfers in and out, and also offensive and defensive schemes that need identifying. However, all of those aren’t the most important issue that Autry needs to solve before his first game at the helm of the Orange. In reality, he needs to solve this problem before his first practice leading Syracuse.

And that’s with his staff.

Autry didn’t offer too much of a comment during his introductory press conference on the status of the current assistant coaches with the program. However, given that Autry, Gerry McNamara and Allen Griffin were spotted together on the recruiting trail this weekend, it seems logical to assume that the other two assistants on the staff are at the very least welcome to return to the Orange.

No matter what the case is with McNamara and Griffin, that still leaves an opening for a third assistant coach. And that opening is the most important task for Autry to solve for Syracuse. It may turn out to be more important than any recruit or transfer that he brings into the program, because a correct hire could set up the program for years.

And that hire needs to excel at coaching the forwards and centers.

Ever since Bernie Fine and Mike Hopkins left the Syracuse program, the development of Orange big men haven’t been exactly stellar. The only ones who developed and improved to have a significant impact on both sides of the floor are Jesse Edwards, Marek Dolezaj, Quincy Guerrier and Oshae Brissett. That’s not exactly a great track record to have four decent forwards over a seven-year span.

Syracuse Basketball: Former 4-star commit, 5-star targets in transfer portal (itlh; Adler)

Four highly ranked players coming out of high school who had former Syracuse basketball recruiting connections are entering the NCAA’s transfer portal.

As the 2023 Big Dance gets underway, names are already going into the portal. After this spring’s NCAA Tournament culminates in early April and the 2022-23 season is officially over, I imagine that the floodgates will open as it pertains to the portal.

But even for now, a couple of players who are familiar to Orange hoops recruiting enthusiasts are in the portal, according to various media reports.

Those in the portal, per social media posts in the last few days, include J.J. Starling, Kamari Lands, Elijah Fisher and Skyy Clark.

Starling, Fisher and Clark are former recruiting targets of the ‘Cuse. Lands at one time was verbally committed to the Orange.

I’ll monitor whether Syracuse basketball ends up pursuing any of these talented players.

The Web site Verbal Commits said on Twitter that the 6-foot-4 Starling has entered the portal.

Starling, a Central New York native, was a five-star, top-25 prospect in the 2022 class. He had Syracuse basketball in his top five before picking Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish went a disappointing 11-21 in 2022-23. Long-time head coach Mike Brey is moving on. This season, Starling averaged 11.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per contest.

BONUS EPISODE: NCAA Tournament bracket breakdown. Who cuts down the nets?

Brownell takes aim at committee, ACC following Clemson's NCAA Tournament miss (theclemsoninsider.com; Potter)

“An emotional 24 hours.”

That’s how Brad Brownell described the whirlwind that was Selection Sunday for his Clemson men’s basketball team. The Tigers’ veteran coach was adamant after his team handedly beat NC State a third time this season in last week’s ACC Tournament quarterfinals that Clemson had done enough to be an NCAA Tournament team.

The selection committee didn’t agree. Clemson was one of the first four at-large candidates to be left out of the field. That despite the Tigers winning 23 games, finishing its third-place season in the ACC with 15 league wins and having a winning record against the first two quadrants, including four Quad 1 victories.

Brownell’s team is now trying to turn its attention to Wednesday’s first-round matchup with Morehead State as part of the National Invitation Tournament. Speaking on Monday for the first time since learning Clemson’s postseason fate, though, Brownell didn’t hold back on what he firmly believes was an NCAA Tournament snub.

MBB: NCAA Bids by P5 Conference

If you weren't already convinced that the NCAA is a corrupt organization, this year's NCAA bracket is exhibit "A".
P5 Conf#Teams%Teams
B1G857%
SEC857%
XII770%
ACC533%
Pac433%

On a percentage basis, the Big Ten and SEC both got nearly twice as many teams into the Big Dance as the ACC - and the Big XII got more than twice the percentage! Only the much-maligned Pac-12 was given the same level of disrespect as the ACC this go around.
And it's not like the ACC didn't have some good candidates who were passed over. When Yahoo Sports listed "this year's 5 biggest NCAA tournament bracket snubs", two of them were from the ACC (Clemson and UNC). Include those two and you'd be at a respectable 7 teams - but as it stands, the rich just keep getting richer at the expense of the middle class...

MBB: GT has a new Head Coach

From ESPN: Georgia Tech names Damon Stoudamire men's basketball coach

Boston Celtics assistant Damon Stoudamire has been named Georgia Tech's new head coach. The two sides agreed to a five-year contract, according to sources.
He brings a blend of college and NBA coaching experience along with a strong playing profile, a mix Tech officials are hopeful can resuscitate the relevance of a program that has faded in recent years.

Coaching Career History:
2008–2009 Rice (director of player development)
2009–2011 Memphis Grizzlies (assistant)
2011–2013 Memphis (assistant)
2013–2015 Arizona (assistant)
2015–2016 Memphis (assistant)
2016–2021 Pacific
2020 WCC Coach of the Year
2021–2023 Boston Celtics (assistant)
2023–present Georgia Tech

Seems like a good hire!
