Syracuse Basketball: J.J. Starling, former recruits soar in transfer rankings (itlh; Adler)

Recruiting services are updating their national rankings of the top players in collegiate hoops who have entered the NCAA’s transfer portal, and there are multiple guys with various connections to Syracuse basketball within some of these latest ratings.

Among those highly placed from recently updated transfer rankings, according to the On3 Web site and 247Sports, is Central New York native J.J. Starling. Starling, a freshman guard from Notre Dame, said last month that he would transfer from the Fighting Irish to the Orange.

Others in these national transfer rankings include Syracuse basketball senior shooting guard Joe Girard III, who recently said he would test the 2023 NBA Draft waters while maintaining his college eligibility, as well as enter the transfer portal.

Additionally, Michigan junior big-man transfer Hunter Dickinson and Auburn freshman guard transfer Chance Westry are names to monitor. Both are former ‘Cuse recruits. I’ve confirmed that the Orange coaching staff has reached out to Westry, while 247Sports analysts say that the ‘Cuse could potentially be viewed as a possible destination for Dickinson.

Let’s look at where Syracuse basketball commit J.J. Starling and others reside in new transfer rankings.

When I penned this column, Hunter Dickinson was No. 1 across the country on the On3 Web site. J.J. Starling, at present, is No. 3 nationally per both the On3 Web site and 247Sports. About a week ago, Starling was No. 1 overall in an initial transfer-ratings list from .

Khalif Battle, the younger brother of former Syracuse basketball star Tyus Battle, is in the transfer portal. A former Syracuse basketball recruit, Khalif Battle is a high-scoring guard who competed in the 2022-23 campaign for Temple as a redshirt sophomore. Battle checks in at No. 8 from 247Sports and No. 12 via On3.

Ex-Syracuse basketball star Michael Carter-Williams plays first NBA game in 2 years (PS; $; Herbert)

For the first time in two years, former Syracuse basketball star Michael Carter-Williams played in an NBA game. Briefly.

MCW, the 2014 NBA Rookie of the Year, played two minutes in the Orlando Magic’s 128-102 win over the Detroit Pistons. He scored 1 point — making one of two free throw attempts — during the “garbage time” appearance at the end of the game, but it gave Orlando a small chance of qualifying for the postseason play-in tournament, and maybe some hope for Carter-Williams’ future.

“What a feeling,” Carter-Williams wrote on Instagram Sunday night. “Hearing the crowd cheer when I checked in almost made me shed a tear. The pain, sweat and tears over the past year and a half has taught me to cherish this sport. It’s only the beginning I can’t wait to keep striving.”

According to ESPN, it was Carter-Williams’ first game action since April 14, 2021, when he recorded 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in 27 minutes for a Magic win over the Chicago Bulls. He missed the 2021-2022 season after undergoing surgery to remove a bone fragment and repair a ligament in his left ankle that summer; previous setbacks include injuries to his shoulder, knee and hip.

Noted downtown Syracuse restaurant to close temporarily, reopen with a ‘refreshed’ look (PS; $; Cazentre)

Otro Cinco, the Mexican-turned-Spanish-themed restaurant in downtown Syracuse, will close temporarily this month.

Owner Johanna Yorke said the restaurant and bar at 266 S. Warren St. will shut down April 15 and reopen in “mid to late summer.”

The closing will allow for renovations that include a new private party space and a “refreshed” decor, Yorke said in an email to syracuse.com. The menu, consisting of favorites like paella and tapas plus other dishes and drinks from Spain, will remain the same, she said.

Otro Cinco opened in 2013 as a spinoff to Yorke’s first restaurant, the California-Mexican-themed Alto Cinco on Westcott Street. Otro closed during the initial wave of the Covid pandemic, then reopened in the summer of 2021 with a less Mexican and more Spanish themes.

Alto Cinco, at 526 Westcott St., opened in 1995 and has been an anchor of the business district there ever since. It will remain open as usual, Yorke said.
