Welcome to Thomas Jefferson Day!

Thomas Jefferson, a founding father of the United States, was born on April 13, 1743. He held many roles and did much during the formative years of the country, including being the main author of the Declaration of Independence and the country's third president. He wrote his own epitaph, highlighting what he most wanted to be remembered for: "HERE WAS BURIED THOMAS JEFFERSON AUTHOR OF THE DECLARATION OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE OF THE STATUTE OF VIRGINIA FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND FATHER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA."

Syracuse Basketball: Zoom with Hunter Dickinson is highly encouraging (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball coaches were expected to hold a Zoom meeting with Michigan big-man transfer Hunter Dickinson on Wednesday.

College basketball insider Marty Mush first reported this development via Twitter on Wednesday. I confirmed Mush’s report with a source of mine familiar with the situation.

This is an encouraging development for the Orange. Not too long ago, Dickinson surprised some college basketball observers when he said that he would enter the NCAA’s transfer portal following his junior season at Big Ten Conference member Michigan.

The 7-foot-1 center, who was an All-American as a freshman, is one of the top big men around the country. Multiple recruiting services currently view Hunter Dickinson as the No. 1 overall transfer across the country at this juncture.

Syracuse basketball faces heavy competition for Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson.

Lately, as national recruiting analysts and scouts have discussed Dickinson’s recruitment after he entered the transfer portal, the Orange’s name has come up on numerous occasions.

Syracuse men’s basketball: North Texas transfer Abou Ousmane to visit SU (TNIAAM; Sigel)

With the breaking news yesterday of Jesse Edwards leaving the Syracuse men’s basketball program over NIL issues, the Syracuse Orange coaching staff now has a new focus.

North Texas center Abou Osumane, a 6-foot-10 big man from Brooklyn, will visit Syracuse sometime next week, according to Adam Zagoria. Osumane plans to visit Seton Hall on Thursday. Providence, Xavier and DePaul are showing interest as well.

Brooklyn native and North Texas transfer @IamAbouOusmane will take an official to @SetonHallMBB on Thursday and to @Cuse_MBB next week

He had a Zoom with @LSUBasketball this morning & is working on dates

Ousmane entered the transfer portal on April 3. He’s played three seasons for North Texas. Over the three-year stretch, Ousmane has seen an increase in playing time and production each season. He played 26 games as a freshman — all off the bench. Over the last two seasons, he’s started all 66 games for the Mean Green, averaging 10.7 points and six rebounds per game.

Jesse Edwards’ decision to enter the transfer portal has triggered questions about NIL, which allows college athletes to make money off their name, image and likeness.

Edwards’ NIL situation was complicated by his status as an international athlete, but his interest in exploring his monetary worth either in Syracuse or in the transfer portal is not unique.

The Edwards transfer news, coupled with Adam Weitsman’s determination that he will no longer be involved in NIL at Syracuse, made for a sobering news cycle for Orange fans.

To thrive and survive in high-level college athletics in 2023, athletic programs must embrace NIL. Syracuse cannot field competitive athletic programs merely by building structures on campus to appeal to potential athletes, though that helps.

It has to find ways to attract and retain athletes its coaches believe will enable them to field competitive teams. And a big part of that equation involves NIL.

Here’s what Syracuse is up against these days:

Collectives

The boldest, most successful collectives are multimillion-dollar endeavors that publicly disclose how much money they’ve accumulated in their war chests and how much they are willing to pay athletes.

A 6-4, 200 lb., freshman, Starling started 24 games while appearing in 28 for the Fighting Irish. An ACC All-Freshman Team selection, he averaged 11.2 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per contest, and 1.1 assists per matchup across his rookie season. Starling connected on 125-of 297 (.421) field-goal attempts and averaged 29.7 minutes per game. Notre Dame finished the season with an 11-21 record.

SCHOLASTIC STARDOM

The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native played three years for Coach Jason Smith at Baker High School. Starling averaged 16.7 points per game as an eighth grader and 20.7 ppg. In his freshman campaign with the Bees. He earned 2018-19 All-Central New York and Class AA All-State recognition.

Starling moved beyond the 1,000 career-point milestone and became Baldwinsville all-time scoring leader during his sophomore season.

30 Minutes In Orange Nation 4-12-23 (ESPN; radio; Orange Nation)

Paulie Scibilia and producer Jordan Capozzi continue debating how big of a deal it is that Jesse Edwards is leaving SU for another school, what the possibilities are for NIL in Syracuse, and the impact of losing Adam Weitsman as a booster.

Immigration attorney Amy Maldonado comes on the show to help us make sense of what NIL is available for international athletes, how a student visa impacts things and what that meant for the Jesse Edwards situation with Syracuse and college teams.

What On Earth Does Syracuse's NIL Future Look Like? (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

The past 24+ hours have been nothing short of gruesome for SU Athletics. After Jesse Edwards’ intentions to test the transfer portal waters were made public, a bombshell was dropped regarding Adam Weitsman.

2/4: Weitsman told me via phone on Tuesday morning that he will no longer be doing NIL, whether with current Syracuse student-athletes or ‘Cuse recruits. He is honoring his two-year agreement with Dyaisha Fair, an Orange women’s basketball player.

"To all the fans out there that think Syracuse is now completely screwed in the NIL realm… reel it back in."

Although @BrianHigginsSU acknowledges losing Adam Weitsman is a factor, he says it is not the end of the world. pic.twitter.com/fq9ESgduxo
— Cuse Sports Talk (@CuseSportsTalk_) April 11, 2023
It may not be the end all be all, but right now Syracuse’s NIL prospects are looking bleak. Weitsman’s support was something that gave the Orange a leg up over rival schools, but now that that is gone, John Wildhack needs to find another strategy and find it fast. You can get an NIL deal centered around medium cups of hot chocolate at pretty much any school in the country. The same cannot be said for something like Weitsman money. Now that that asset is out the door, Syracuse has been cast into a wide sea of options, with no set direction. Let’s be honest, what has SU done NIL-wise other than use Weitsman?

Axe: The Adam Weitsman way didn’t work for SU. Who can blame him for leaving? (PS; $; Axe)

Syracuse University is not back to square one in the name, image and likeness game in the wake of Adam Weitsman pulling his high-profile and high-priced support of SU athletics.

But make no mistake, it’s a major setback.

Love him or hate him, Weitsman brought SU juice in the NIL and public relations game it couldn’t buy with its $1.76 billion in its endowment.

It also spawned questions about Weitsman’s motivation. Was he really trying to help Syracuse or use its giant platform to grow his own profile?

Weitsman has been insistent in every conversation I’ve had with him, including on Tuesday, that his actions every step of the way were fueled by helping SU student-athletes and giving Orange fans an experience.

Michael Flores stars in "Sendero" with Rosie Perez, a dog that shares its name with a famous actress. Sendero also writes and directs the new movie, shot almost entirely in Central New York.

New movie shot in Central NY promises big journey, and a cute little dog (PS; Herbert)

A new movie shot in the Syracuse area promises a big, emotional journey — and a cute little dog.

“Sendero,” written, directed produced by and starring Michael Flores, centers on a young couple, Sol (Flores) and Gina (Nicki Valastro), who dream of travel and adventure. But when Gina is killed in a school shooting, Sol takes a road trip in a vintage RV with their dog, Rosie Perez (named after the famous actress), with hopes of keeping his wife’s memory alive by helping others and rediscovering his Mestizo (Hispanic and Native American) heritage.

“Sendero,” which is Spanish for “Path,” was shot almost entirely in Central New York. The cast includes local actors and Jon Proudstar, best known for playing Leon on FX’s “Reservation Dogs.”

“I am very proud to be a part of this film,” Proudstar said in a statement.

According to a press release, the film was primarily conceived as a festival piece with themes and an engaging storyline. Student Academy Award winner and civil rights filmmaker Brad Bailey called it “an act of courage and representation.”

“There is enough intrigue, peril and heart to satisfy mainstream viewers drawn to such movies as ‘Nomadland,’ ‘Nebraska,’ and, more recently, ‘A Man Called Otto,’” Flores said. “Sendero combines dramatic quality with huge commercial potential.”

Flores is a local filmmaker who has contributed to productions like “A Quiet Place Part II,” “Paper Spiders,” “The Binge,” “The Night House,” and “Banana Split.” He also co-founded Nomad Cinemas, which sets up outdoor movie screenings at places like the Everson Museum and the Syracuse Inner Harbor.

“Sendero” will premiere this Friday, April 14, at 6 p.m. at American High (Syracuse Studios), the former A.V. Zogg Middle School and Liverpool high school located at at 800 4th Street, Liverpool, N.Y. There will be a Q&A with Sendero immediately following the screening.

Great first year for HCFLJ, staff and team!
