Welcome to Chinese Language Day!

Chinese is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. In February 2010, the UN created six language days "to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization." The days were also created "to increase awareness and respect for the history, culture and achievements of each of the six working languages among the UN community." The creation of the days was part of the 2010 International Mother Language Day. Besides Chinese, there are days that honor the Russian, English, Arabic, French, and Spanish languages. Events are held at the UN Headquarters each year. Common events have included a grand opening ceremony, film screenings, lectures, panel discussions, workshops for writing Chinese calligraphy, a martial arts demonstration, and performances of traditional music and folk dancing.

The Devo & Kris Jo Show 4-19-23 Syracuse Men's Basketball: A Roller Coaster Week (youtube.com; podcast; Cuse Sports Talk)

Eric Devendorf and Kris Joseph are joined by their producer Jordan Capozzi to discuss Jesse Edwards' transferring to West Virginia, the addition of Chance Westry to the Orange roster, a potential reunion with Quincy Guerrier, and much more.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse/recruiting/bleav-in-syracuse-episode-72 (SI; podcast; the Bleav)

Bleav in Syracuse podcast episode 72, presented by Bet Online and Hofmann Sausage Company, is out! Host Mike McAllister speaks with 2024 guard Jalil Bethea about his recruitment and fantasy sports writer/podcaster/radio show host Brian Drake about Syracuse's NIL situation, specifically regarding Jesse Edwards and what he was offered.

Syracuse men’s basketball: available centers the Orange could add for next season (TNIAAM; Sigel)

In an interview earlier this week with Jon Rothstein, Syracuse Orange head coach Adrian Autry said he wanted to add two more guards and a center for the 2023-24 season.

A few hours after the podcast was released, SU added Chance Westry.

The center position, however, is a bit more complicated. The coaching staff hadn’t reached out to any centers — that we know of — until Jesse Edwards officially entered the transfer portal back on April 11. They couldn’t, because it appeared Jesse was coming back. He wanted to come back. Syracuse wanted him back, but, as we know, the NIL side of things couldn’t be worked out in the end.

So now we focus on who could potentially replace Jesse’s minutes and production. Spoiler alert: you probably won’t replace his production. Unless you land, say, Hunter Dickinson. But we’ll get to that later.

The staff has been involved in a few available centers. Two of which are still on the board via the transfer portal, one high school prospect that just became available again and one transfer that has decided to go elsewhere. We break it down below:

Syracuse Basketball: Former 4-star big-man target will reopen recruitment (itlh; Adler)

Four-star senior center Papa Kante, a former Syracuse basketball recruiting target, said on Twitter that he is requesting a release from his national letter of intent to Big Ten Conference member Michigan and plans to reopen his recruitment back up.

The 6-foot-10 Kante is rated as a top-100 national prospect and a top-10 center within the 2023 class, according to multiple recruiting services.

Kante received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff in late August of 2021, when he took an unofficial visit to the Hill to compete in the team’s annual Elite Camp.

Per his bio on the 247Sports Web site, Kante has landed nearly 20 scholarship offers from a range of high-major programs. According to 247Sports, he verbally committed to the Wolverines in October of last year and signed his NLI to play at Michigan the following month.

Syracuse basketball, though, does have a commitment from a center in the 2023 cycle.

As soon as word broke on Tuesday that Kante was requesting a release from his NLI to Michigan, I saw a variety of comments on social media that spoke to whether the ‘Cuse may reach out to him. For what it’s worth, Kante has said in the past that as it pertains to the Orange, head coach Adrian Autry was the lead recruiter for him.

Is There Any Chance Kiyan Anthony Doesn't Choose Syracuse? (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

For the first time in what feels like forever, Syracuse has recruiting momentum. With JJ Starling and Chance Westry both making their way to Central New York through the transfer portal, things are going well for Adrian Autry and company when it comes to attracting talent. Now, it would be awesome to see the Orange pick up another high school recruit or two in addition to Elijah Moore. Well, it isn’t hard to think of someone who makes perfect sense.

When Syracuse offered Kiyan Anthony back in November, it felt like the arrival of the inevitable. Was Carmelo’s son ever not going to get an offer from SU, regardless of who the Head Coach was? Make no mistake, Kiyan is no slouch, and the above tape backs it up. 247 Sports lists him as the #62 overall player in the class of 2025, the #14 shooting guard, and the third-best player out of New York State. This is someone who feels like a match made in heaven for the Orange.

As much as match made in heaven as this is, you can’t help but worry about Kiyan going elsewhere.

Syracuse basketball: Adrian Autry opens up about replacing Jim Boeheim, outlines year one goals (247sports.com; Bahns)

A nearly 50-year era of Syracuse men’s basketball came to an end when longtime head coach Jim Boeheim announced his retirement March 8, and shortly thereafter, the program selected one of his former players and assistant coaches, Adrian Autry, to lead the Orange into the future.

Autry, who goes by the nickname “Red,” is a 1994 graduate of Syracuse who spent the last 12 years in an assistant role at his alma mater.

“Dream come true,” he said of earning the head coaching job on Tuesday’s episode of College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein. “A lot at once, but you always think about it. You kind of prepare for it as you go through your journey as an assistant. I’m just excited, but it’s been a lot. I’ve leaned into it. I think we’ve kind of hit the ground running a little bit.”

Autry ranks fifth in career assists and sixth in career steals at Syracuse after starting 116 games for the Orange from 1990-1994. He played professionally, mostly in Europe, before joining the coaching ranks in 2006. His first collegiate job came in 2008 when he joined the Virginia Tech staff, and he returned to Syracuse ahead of the 2011-12 season. He most recently served in the role of associate head coach since 2017.

Below are highlights from Autry’s interview on College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein.

On his reaction to being named the head coach:
“For me, in this situation: very, very humbled. Just like in awe, so to speak. And then once you get past that, it’s like, man, it’s big shoes to fill. But you just kind of dive into it, because if you think about that, it can kind of scare you a little bit, especially coming in in my situation. Talking to Coach, he was very involved with it. He gave me the wisdom and knowledge that I needed to be able to navigate this, so that helped out a lot as well.”

RENNERVATIONS Host and Executive Producer Jeremy Renner stands for a photo with Showrunner and Executive Producer Patrick Costello at the vehicle reveal in Reno, NV. (Disney/Katrina Marcinowski)

Marcellus native brings adventurous spirit to Jeremy Renner TV show (PS; Herbert)

When he was growing up in Central New York, Patrick Costello wanted to see the world. Now he’s doing it with a world-famous Marvel superhero — and making a difference along the way.

“I was a bit of a rambunctious kid,” Costello told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. “I always wanted to go on adventures.”

Costello, a 1994 graduate of Marcellus High School, is the showrunner and executive producer for Jeremy Renner’s new Disney+ TV show, “Rennervations.” The four-part series follows the “Hawkeye” actor as he renovates unique purpose-built vehicles to meet a community’s needs, from creating a water purification system in India to building a mobile music studio for an afterschool program in Chicago.

It’s a passion project for Renner, a two-time Oscar nominee who has always been a “construction aficionado” behind the scenes. Costello said Renner had already been making similar efforts to help people in need, such as buying a decommissioned fire truck and converting it into something for kids’ birthday parties, when one of his friends pitched it as a reality show.
