Welcome to May Day!

May Day is a spring holiday in many cultures, and a national holiday in many European countries. It stemmed from ancient celebrations which included Floralia, a Roman festival honoring the flower goddess Flora; Walpurgis Night, which was celebrated by Germanic countries; Beltane, a Gaelic holiday; and Anthesteria, a Greek festival. In some European pagan cultures, it was seen as the first day of summer, while the summer solstice was celebrated as Midsummer. Celebrants would get up early and gather flowers and branches to decorate their houses with.

Former Syracuse guard Symir Torrence announces transfer to Binghamton (PS; Waters)

Former Syracuse guard Symir Torrence will transfer to Binghamton University for his fifth and final year of college eligibility.

Torrence, a 6-foot-3 guard who spent the last two years at Syracuse University, made the announcement via his Instagram page on Sunday.

A native of Syracuse, Torrence attended the Syracuse Academy of Science before spending his final two years of high school at Vermont Academy. He played at Marquette as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to play at his hometown university.

This past season, Torrence averaged 2.4 points and 1.6 assists in just 11 minutes per game as the back-up to starting point guard Judah Mintz. As a junior with the Orange, Torrence averaged 1.6 assists and just 0.8 turnovers.

Torrence is a quality ball-handler and floor leader. For his entire four-year college career, Torrence has handed out 220 assists against just 93 turnovers.

Torrence has another year of eligibility after the NCAA granted all student-athletes an extra year due to the Covid-impacted 2020-21 season.

He will join a Binghamton team that went 13-18 last season, including an 8-8 mark in the America East Conference. The Bearcats are coached by Levell Sanders. The former Seton Hall guard will be entering his third season as Binghamton’s coach next year.

What Is The Best Possible Starting Five For Syracuse Basketball Since 2010?

Syracuse Basketball: Big offers flowing in for 4-star recruit Kiyan Anthony (itlh; Adler)

It was only a matter of time before Syracuse basketball recruiting target Kiyan Anthony from New York City started to see his scholarship offer sheet really take off.

The 6-foot-5 Anthony, a four-star shooting guard in the 2025 class, is off to a hot start amid two NCAA live periods in April on the AAU circuit.

Lately, national recruiting analysts and scouts have commented on how Anthony’s game is evolving beyond that of primarily a long-distance shooter into an all-around prospect who finishes through contact around the rim, displays his athleticism, and is more assertive on both ends of the court.

Kiyan Anthony, the son of Orange legend and long-time NBA star Carmelo Anthony, received a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse last November. Understandably, some Syracuse basketball fans think it’s a guarantee that Kiyan Anthony will don an Orange uniform down the line, but I’m not in that camp.

He’s picked up several new offers of late, and as the contact period opens up in mid-June for players in the sophomore cycle, and college coaches can contact him directly, I fully expect the offer list of Kiyan Anthony to balloon.

Axe: Monday mailbag! Your questions on SU hoops, lacrosse, Sean Tucker and more (PS; $; Axe)

Axe me your questions and I’ll tell you no lies.

The mailbag was overflowing with inquiries on Syracuse basketball, lacrosse, Sean Tucker and more.

Let’s get to answering them.

If you want to send an internet correspondence, please do so at baxe@syracuse.com or @brentaxemedia on Twitter.

**************

Brent,

A bit shocked that (Sean) Tucker wasn’t drafted. The whole ‘medical exemption’ issue that was like a mystery definitely hurt. Maybe full disclosure would’ve been better? Interested in your thoughts on it. As I saw all these much less talented RBs get picked it made me sick.

-Chris

Chris, if you had told me a month ago that 18 running backs would hear their names called at the 2023 NFL Draft and Tucker was not among them, I would have stared at you as if lobsters were crawling out of your ears.

Clearly the medical issues were a major factor. Tucker had been rated as a Top 10 prospect at his position.

I don’t think his camp did him any favors by clamming up through the draft process.

Tucker has a long road ahead to prove himself as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and to disprove critics that called for him to return to Syracuse for another season.

Syracuse Basketball: New 5-star recruit eyeing visits to blue-blood teams (itlh; Adler)

New Syracuse basketball 2025 five-star target Darryn Peterson had a monster outing on Saturday amid a live period this weekend on the AAU circuit, and comments from a national recruiting expert suggest that the top-five overall player is looking to visit some blue-blood programs in the near future.
The 6-foot-5 Peterson, one of at least eight prospects in the sophomore cycle to have received a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse at this juncture, is an elite shooting guard from Ohio who should significantly contend for the No. 1 national ranking in the 2025 class.

Syracuse basketball coaches, just a few days ago, offered a scholarship to Peterson, according to a tweet from high-school hoops analyst Alex Karamanos.

Peterson, during the 2022-23 season for the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, averaged 31 points, nine rebounds and three steals per game. MaxPreps named him a 2022-23 first-team All-American within the 2025 cycle.

Upstate NY pizza chef ranks as one of the best in the world (PS; Hernandez)

New York is known for its award-winning pizza and an Upstate NY pie maker recently took home top accolades at the International Pizza Expo and Conference in Las Vegas, NV.

The Capital Region’s Anthony Berghela recently placed the top three of the traditional division of the International Pizza Expo and was first overall in the Northeast category.

Berghela, who owns award winning Romo’s Pizza in Glenmont, didn’t always have his eyes on the pies. In his biography on World Pizza Champions, it says his career aspirations was to be a famous athlete and played basketball in college.

After college with an unsure career path, Berghela worked various jobs and ended up enjoying his time in a bakery. Shortly thereafter, he looked into starting his own pizzeria.

Then, in 2009, came Romo’s.

In his quest for pizza perfection, Berghela read books, watched videos, and trained with other expert pizza chefs to learn new techniques and new styles of pizza to bring back to Upstate New York.
