Welcome to National Twilight Zone Day!
Today we celebrate the anthology television series The Twilight Zone. It is unclear why the show is celebrated on May 11, as there is no apparent connection between the date and the show. During its 5-season run, the series was both popular with fans and became critically acclaimed.
The Twilight Zone premiered on October 2, 1959, on CBS. It was created by Rod Serling, who not only came up with its concept and wrote or co-wrote 92 of its 156 episodes but also hosted and narrated it. It was one of the first science fiction series, and also had elements of suspense, horror, psychological fiction, drama, and fantasy. Serling combined his love of pulp fiction novels with topics that weren't often addressed on television at the time: social issues such as war (including nuclear), McCarthyism, and racism. In the opening of each episode, characters were transported to another dimension—the fifth dimension—which was called "the Twilight Zone." There they dealt with many unusual events, and the show often had a surprise ending with a moral lesson.

Syracuse guard Judah Mintz is currently testing the NBA waters, while the portal continues to be a revolving door for the Orange.

Q: I’ve seen two dates given as the deadline for college players to withdraw from the NBA draft; May 31 and June 12. Which is it?

Mike: I’m glad Pete sent in this question because it gives me the opportunity to clarify some confusion surrounding the NBA draft, especially since Syracuse fans are going to be intently interested in this year’s draft.
Syracuse freshman Judah Mintz has entered his name in the NBA draft, but he has maintained his college eligibility. Mintz has been invited to the NBA combine, which will be held May 15-21 in Chicago. The NBA draft will be held on June 22 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Syracuse native Mika Adams-Woods announces decision to transfer from Cincinnati (PS; Waters)
Mika Adams-Woods, a Syracuse native and former student at Bishop Ludden High School, announced on Tuesday that he would enter the NCAA’s transfer portal.
Adams-Woods, a 6-foot-3 guard, has spent the last four years at the University of Cincinnati. He averaged 9.1 points and 3.2 assists per game last season.
He would have one year of eligibility remaining as a result of the extra year that the NCAA granted all student-athletes as a result of the Covid-impacted 2020-21 season.
Last month, Adams-Woods had indicated that he would use the extra year to stay at Cincinnati where he has started 109 games over the past four years. However, Adams-Woods entered the portal Tuesday; just two days before the NCAA’s cut-off date of May 11.

Syracuse Basketball: Former 4-star big-man recruit enters transfer portal (itlh; Adler)
Isaiah Miranda, a freshman at N.C. State who held a Syracuse basketball scholarship offer while in high school, has entered the NCAA’s transfer portal, according to multiple media reports, including a tweet from 247Sports national analyst Travis Branham.
The 7-foot-1 power forward/center received an offer from the Orange in November of 2021. He was originally a member of the 2023 cycle but ended up reclassifying and enrolling at fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member N.C. State in December of last year, per 247Sports.
Media reports have said that Miranda is testing the 2023 NBA Draft waters. During the 2022-23 season, he did not see any court time for the Wolfpack.
This past term, N.C. State went 23-11 overall and reached this spring’s NCAA Tournament, where the No. 11 seed Wolfpack lost in the round of 64 to the No. 6 seed Creighton.
Former Syracuse basketball recruit Isaiah Miranda has hit the transfer portal
Miranda, a native of Pawtucket, R.I., competed for the Springfield Commonwealth Academy in Springfield, Mass., before spending his senior year at the Southern California Academy in Northridge, Calif.
Throughout his recruiting process, he picked up more than 20 offers from a range of high-major programs. In September of 2022, Miranda disclosed a top eight of Southern California, UCLA, Oregon, Louisville, Georgetown, Texas, UConn and Rhode Island.

Former Syracuse guard Richard Duffy remembered as devoted mentor, 'fiery' competitor (DO; Alandt)
The story of Syracuse men’s basketball catapulting onto the national stage can’t be told without a fierce point guard who was known as a smooth talker.
In 1962, the Orange finished their worst season in program history. An abysmal 2-22 record marked the end of head coach Marc Guley’s 12-year stint at the helm. Fred Lewis, a 36-year-old former Long Island University-Brooklyn standout, replaced Guley.
Lewis was set to inherit future NBA player Dave Bing, Chuck Richards — a talented center who transferred from Army — and Jim Boeheim, a walk-on from Lyons, New York. But Syracuse required a veteran presence. Lewis needed someone to guide his up-tempo play style and Richard Duffy, a scrappy sophomore guard from Katonah, New York, fit seamlessly into that mold.
“He was fiery,” former teammate Rex Trobridge said. “He didn’t back down from anybody.”
Duffy, despite suffering an injury his sophomore year to the cartilage in his knee, started at point guard for the majority of his three seasons with Syracuse. His ball handling skills and quickness led SU to its first postseason in seven years with a berth in the 1964 National Invitational Tournament. Duffy died last Thursday at the age of 80 in Wilmington, North Carolina, after dealing with multiple heart and lung issues.

Syracuse Basketball: Priority target Jalil Bethea soars into top 10 nationally (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2024 four-star target Jalil Bethea from the Philadelphia area, who was an All-American as a junior and has crushed the AAU circuit so far this spring, has vaulted into the top 10 across the country in his class.
MADE Hoops recently updated its national rankings for the 2024 cycle, and the 6-foot-4 combo guard moved up eight spots, to No. 10 overall in this class. According to several other recruiting services, Bethea is a top-50 national prospect and a top-10 shooting guard within the 2024 cycle. He can suit up at both point guard and shooting guard.
For a while now, some national analysts and scouts have said that Jalil Bethea is a significant contender for five-star status in the junior class.
In grassroots basketball, he competes for the Philadelphia-based Team Final in Nike’s EYBL league. He is also a standout at Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster, Pa., which during the 2022-23 term advanced to the semifinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (“PIAA”) 6A tournament.

A well-known character actor was spotted in Central New York grabbing some grub.
William Fichtner, whose credits include “Armageddon,” “Prison Break” and “Crash,” was seen visiting the Rise N Shine Diner in Syracuse. The Westcott Street restaurant posted a photo of the celebrity sighting on Facebook and Instagram with several heart emojis.
“Whoa! It’s (Bill Fichtner)!!! Thank you so much for stopping in!” the Rise N Shine Diner wrote Wednesday. “So nice to meet you!”
Staff said they did not know why Fichtner was in town, but he’s no stranger to Upstate New York. He grew up in Cheektowaga, attended SUNY Brockport, and is a longtime Buffalo Bills fan. He also directed, co-wrote and starred in “Cold Brook,” which was partly filmed at SUNY Cortland.
Fichtner has appeared in more than 95 movies and TV shows, including as Col. Willie Sharp in the 1998 blockbuster “Armageddon” and as Alex Mahone on the Fox television series “Prison Break.” His acting credits also include “The Dark Knight,” “Entourage,” “The Perfect Storm,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Black Hawk Down,” “The West Wing,” “Veep,” “Heat,” “Contact,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “As the World Turns,” “Blades of Glory,” “MDs,” “Crash,” “Mom” and “Independence Day: Resurgence.”
