Welcome to National Maritime Day!

The United States has always been and will always be a great maritime nation. From our origins as 13 British colonies, through every period of peace and conflict since, the Merchant Marine has been a pillar in this country’s foundation of prosperity and security. They power the world’s largest economy and strengthen our ties with trading partners around the world, all while supporting our military forces by shipping troops and supplies wherever they need to go.

Ninety years ago, Congress declared National Maritime Day to commemorate the American steamship Savannah’s voyage from the United States to England, marking the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with steam propulsion. During World War II more than 250,000 members of the American Merchant Marine served their country, with more than 6,700 giving their lives, hundreds being detained as prisoners of war and more than 800 U.S. merchant ships being sunk or damaged.

Jim Brown and basketball: SU great ‘might have made a difference’ if he remained with team (PS; $; Waters)

Jim Brown is widely considered the greatest running back in NFL history. The former Syracuse star is also considered the greatest player in lacrosse history.

Brown spent nine years with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and is now inducted in the pro and college football Hall of Fames along with the lacrosse Hall of Fame

But Brown’s exploits during his years at Syracuse also extended past the gridiron and the lacrosse field to the basketball court. The legendary sports figure, who died Thursday at the age of 87, played two seasons for SU’s basketball team.

As a sophomore, Brown averaged 15.0 points per game for the Orangemen. The team’s star, eventual All-American Vinnie Cohen, led the team with 15.8 points per game. The following season Brown scored 11.3 points per game. In one game against Sampson Air Force Base, Brown scored 33 points despite not starting.

“I can remember games that he would break open just on his strength,’' late Syracuse star Manny Breland said in Rod MacDonald’s 1975 history on Syracuse basketball. “And he was quick. People didn’t realize it, but he had a good shot. He was well-coordinated, of course, but his strength. A lot of times he would drive for the basket and guys would hit him, but because of his strength he could still carry through with that move.

“I remember one game, in the space of about four minutes he had nine points,’' Breland recalled. “And it was just three 3-point plays.’'

Syracuse basketball to face Oregon in South Dakota (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team will face Oregon in a unique non-conference game as part of its 2023-24 schedule.

Syracuse and Oregon will meet at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Dec. 17, according to a release from the SU athletics department.

”We are excited to play in the Sanford Pentagon against Oregon,” Adrian Autry, who will be in his first year as Syracuse’s head coach following the 47-year tenure of Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim, said in the release. “I believe this game will help to enhance our non-conference schedule and will be a great game for our players and our program. We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Syracuse went 17-15 last season, while Oregon finished with a 21-15 mark. It was the 13th 20-win season in Dana Altman’s 13 years as Oregon’s coach.

“This is a great opportunity for our program,” said Altman. “We are excited to play in this historic venue against an opponent like Syracuse. Our team is looking forward to visiting Sioux Falls.”

Syracuse Basketball: 7-foot-4 center to have immediate impact defensively (itlh; Adler)

An expert says that new Syracuse basketball commit Naheem McLeod should have an immediate impact on the defensive end of the floor for the Orange in the upcoming 2023-24 season.

Not too long ago, McLeod, a Florida State big-man transfer, said on Twitter that he was committing to the Orange.

The 7-foot-4 sophomore center, who hails from Philadelphia, has two years of collegiate eligibility remaining. His only official visit since entering the NCAA’s transfer portal last month was to Syracuse basketball.

The Orange coaching staff was focused on landing a center via the transfer portal to round out this position group for the ‘Cuse ahead of this coming term. Senior center Jesse Edwards transferring to West Virginia prompted the Orange to add a fourth center, in McLeod, for 2023-24.

An analyst discusses the skill set of new Syracuse basketball commit Naheem McLeod, an FSU transfer center.

Jordan Cornette, an analyst with the ACC Network, told Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters that the Orange certainly will miss Edwards’ presence on both ends of the floor. Cornette, though, says that McLeod “provides instant height and size. He’s a young big man with a lot of potential.”

Syracuse basketball gives Kansas guard ‘best chance to compete for’ title (itlh; Adler)

It has proven quite a busy and encouraging week for Syracuse basketball.

The Orange coaching staff picked up not one, but two, players via the NCAA’s transfer portal over the past week or so, and the ‘Cuse has certainly solidified its roster ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Last Monday, Florida State big-man transfer Naheem McLeod said he would move to Syracuse basketball. The Philadelphia native, a 7-foot-4 sophomore, provides the Orange with additional depth at center after senior Jesse Edwards left for West Virginia.

Then on Thursday, the Orange coaching staff bolstered its backcourt when Kyle Cuffe Jr., a redshirt freshman guard at Kansas, said he would transfer to Syracuse basketball. It’s unclear at this juncture whether freshman point guard Judah Mintz will stay in the 2023 NBA Draft or return for his sophomore year.

The Orange coaching staff landing the 6-foot-2 Cuffe, who is from Harlem, N.Y., could be an indication that Syracuse basketball doesn’t think Mintz will return. Either way, ‘Cuse coaches have now added four promising transfers this spring, with the other two being Notre Dame freshman guard J.J. Starling and Auburn freshman guard Chance Westry.

Syracuse Basketball: New 4-star commit wants to ‘bring home’ national title (itlh; Adler)

New Syracuse basketball 2024 four-star commit Donnie Freeman from Washington, D.C., is ready to get to work and return the Orange to its prior glory days.

The 6-foot-9 power forward, a top-40 national prospect in the junior cycle, verbally committed to the ‘Cuse not too long ago. He picked the Orange over other finalists Alabama, Iowa, Texas and Georgia Tech.

Recently, Freeman made his college decision in a touching commitment announcement via the 247Sports YouTube page.

He talked candidly about his parents and his sister, and their support for him, and also discussed the strong, long-time relationship that he has forged with the Syracuse basketball coaching staff, which is now led by head coach Adrian Autry.

Freeman has a clear message for Orange fans and the rest of the country. “Syracuse basketball is back. We’re coming,” per a tweet from 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London.

Syracuse Basketball: Mock-draft projections as Judah Mintz hits combine (itlh; Adler)

The 2023 NBA Draft Combine will take place this week in Chicago, and Syracuse basketball freshman point guard Judah Mintz is an expected participant.

The 6-foot-3 Mintz, who had a terrific first season for the Orange during the 2022-23 campaign, is testing the 2023 NBA Draft waters while maintaining his college eligibility.

The combine, per a media release from the NBA, will occur from May 15 to May 21 at the Wintrust Arena and the Marriott Marquis in Chicago. The 2023 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 22 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn N.Y.

Without question, if Judah Mintz has a strong showing at the combine, that will only help boost his draft stock as the 2023 NBA Draft inches closer. Many ‘Cuse fans, myself included, would love to see him return to the Hill for another stanza, but if Mintz stays in the draft, I hope he’s a high pick and crushes things in the professional ranks.

4 restaurants go home with top honors at Battle of the Wings (PS; Miller)

A steady wind and occasional rain showers kept some people away from the annual Chicken Wing Battle this weekend, but plenty of others seemed to pick up the slack and devour tens of thousands of flats and drums.

The two-day Inner Harbor festival featured non-stop music on two stages, a dozen food trucks and 12 restaurants and bars selling the wings that got them there. Festival-goers voted for their favorite wings, and 22 “local celebrity” judges picked their champion in a four-round March Madness-type bracket contest.

The winners of the Wing Battle are:

The Eat Local New York Popular Vote: Home Team Pub (Buffalo garlic parm)

Battle of the Wings Bracket Challenge: Change of Pace (Hot honey garlic). The 22 judges included Syracuse City Court James Cecile, billionaire scrap dealer and restaurant owner Adam Weitsman, Onondaga County Comptroller Marty Masterpole, Syracuse Mets general manager Jason Smorol, former SU basketball player Eric Devendorf, NewsChannel 9 reporter Andrew Donovan and syracuse.com food writer Charlie Miller.

Buffalo Wing King Award: The Pizza Cutters (Everything wing). This was the best overall chicken wing selected by an organizer of National Wing Festival in Buffalo.
